Okay, Stiller is not Stewart. Maybe that clears it up? Because Stewart is hilarious, loved the bit about Brokeback Mountain. |

Stiller was funny. He should have hosted.. I have to say not sure I've seen the audience so quiet when the host speaks.. Much worse than Letterman was so far. |

However, I agree on the lack 'o laughs tonight. btw: he has been in Bunny's on the same night as Strawberry. No introduction was made. sorry straw. |

I'm with red. I really liked the Oscars for a change last night. First time I enjoyed since Billy Crystal. Liked the opening, liked the faux commercials. Sure liked the speedy clip -- didn't even know how long it had gone. I think, tho, I agree with Brokeback Straw on Matt Dillon being robbed. I was very surprised by Reese W getting Best Actress (I like her, but not sure that was the best of te best this year). I liked the mild lampooning. Some of them need to laugh at themselves a tad. Got a particular kick out of the Charlize Theron and Keira Knightly commercials (not sure they did!) |

I liked the Old Western clips - very funny. Jon's delivery seemed too slow - works better on the show, but oh well. And Ben Stiller is almost never very funny to me. Rock on Best Animated Short!! Winner was The Moon and the Son. My friend's brother in Law was the film editor!! |

Tom, My post was not as clear as it should have been. I don't mind if entertainers and movie stars change their names, because they are just the modern equivalent of minstrels and jesters. If someone wants to be taken seriously, they should use the name they were born with (except on MOL!). This is just my opinion, of course. I am not familiar with Jon Stewart, but I have heard people refer to him as a cogent political analyst. Maybe he is, I just don't know. Off the top of my head, the only other example that comes to mind is Gary Hartpence. Cheers |

CFA, I agree. That's why I liked Jon Stewart, etc. Some of them need to laugh at themselves (especially the women). Only thing that bugged me was the a-little-too-frequent, self-serving mention about how great the experience is in theatres v DVD. Too sales-y. Better they should respond to real reasons a lot of people (at least adults) don't go to the theatre (prices of tickets, audience behavior, etc.). I can like Ben Stiller, but his shtick last night was stupid and went on for too long. |

Steel Observations: There seemed to be an unusually tremendous amount of mom-thanking. Much more than usual, (was it mother's day?) Very glad Philip Seymour Hoffman won. Always been a fantastic actor. Ironic that one of the things that I always enjoyed about his performances was his deep voice. Did I miss it or did Ang Lee forget to thank his cast? (I MUST have missed it). I have learned that at the end of his speech when he spoke Chinese that what he was saying was, "Yes I am gay, so what?" (ok I made that up). "Crash" was a bit of a surprise after all the "Brokeback Mountain" hype and a deserving one. It was appropriate as it was also a somehow surprising film. Every scene seemed to be heading in a particular direction and then went somewhere else. Matt Dillon WAS good in Crash but Clooney was also deserving. If anyone got "robbed" there it may have been Giamatti. In an otherwise somewhat dreary movie, -Cinderella Man, (with some good fight scenes), He lifted every scene that he was in. Which reminds me, -Is it well known that perpetually sporting a 2-day beard that Russell Crowe (much like Brett Farve), has and although apparently meant to appear "rough-and-tumble-devil-may-care", actually takes much more work of vanity than just shaving everyday? (somehow that annoys me). Amy Adams was really-really great in Junebug. Apparently considering the awards that it won, -Art Direction, Cinematography and Costumes, -"Memoirs of a Geisha" is an excellent film to see with the sound off. The Oscar directors completely cut-off the acceptance speech of the other writer of "Crash". Paul Haggis got to say his thanks, then Bobby Moresco steps to the mike and the show moved on with a voice-over about "coming up next". I mean the guy works his whole career, writes this great original story, WINS the Oscar and then doesn't get to thank his mom on the air. -whatta gip. I confess that I missed much of the show mostly because the whole format has become a bit predictable and dull with stilted intro speeches that all these professional actors who cannot breathe life into from the teleprompters, followed by adoring clip montages followed by cut-away shots of people staring at the stage etc etc, and so I kept clicking away to watch bits of anything else and coming back to have already missed whatever Jon Stewart had just said. I did enjoy that Robert Altman choose to thank the doctor who was taking care of him as a proxy for everyone else to thank. THE END. Credits roll.

I know she's an icon and all, but Lauren Bacall looked a bit out of sorts. Maybe the TelePrompter was too far away for her to view it properly or maybe she had a bit too many dirty martini's before stepping up to the podium. Whatever it was, she just didn't seem with it. |

But I have heard people (OK, maybe 2 or 3) speak with some respect about his political views. I guess I just don't like comedians who are all about politics as opposed to comedians who comment on the human condition, including politics. I miss Johnny Carson. Cheers |

3ring, He does a news spoof show, not a general interest talk show. He did a few jokes last night about current events (as all hosts do), but most of them were aimed at the audience and Hollywood itself. Hosting the Oscars is a thankless task. These guys (and Whoopis) are asked to repeatedly bring the energy back up after innumerable stilted intros and tedious acceptance speeches. And they have to take meetings with Bruce Vilanch. |

I thought Jon Stewart did a good job last night. Some of the jokes were very funny and the clips were interesting at least. I still think that no one touches Billy Crystal. I loved that Three 6 Mafia walked away with an oscar. It was a real down year for movie songs though. What must Jay-Z, Kanye West, Dr. Dre, Eminem and Busta Rhymes be thinking today?

Thought Jon Stewart was funny from what I saw, though I missed a few minutes and did spend a lot of time talking throughout the show. Note on Lauren Bacall: the woman is 82 years old. She was made to look foolish; someone should have helped her or made the TelePrompTer easier for her to read. Give her a break. I had read somewhere that winners were advised to keep their acceptance speeches to 45 seconds. There was also some stipulation about having only ONE person speak on behalf of a group. That would explain the music and the sound cut-offs. That seemed a bit rigid to me. People got recognized for their hard work, and couldn't even be permitted to squeeze in a thank you??? Note to threeringale: most of Hollywood has changed their names, as Tom pointed out. Meg Ryan, Demi Moore....etc. Many politicians have also changed their names, including Gerald Ford. Jimmy Carter even legally changed his name to "Jimmy". Shall we not take him seriously? |

The funnier the host, the less the audience gets the jokes. Chris Rock, Jon Stewart, David Letterman, Steve Martin...their stuff seemed to go over the audience's heads. But those Hollywood types just can't get enough Whoopi! Go figure. |

I would like to add that the ben stiller skit was a huge rip off of Ed Begley Jr in Amazon Women on the Moon. Ed plays a crazy guy who thinks he is the invisable man, but is really just naked and runs around moving things as if no one can see him..... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092546/ If you ever get a chance to see this, you should. |

I know the show has to move along, but I think it's much more interesting to let the award winners speak at whatever length they choose, within reason-- 2 minutes maybe? This is the biggest night of most of their lives--being recognized for excellence in their work by their peers--and some of the most memorable moments from these shows have been the acceptance speeches. They could have cut some of the montages to free up some extra time. The way some speakers are cut off, it seems unnecessarily rude. The host job is a tricky one, and I'm not sure that Jon Stewart's talent is best suited for it--the host has to entertain both the audience in the theater and viewers at home. In my opinion, Billy Crystal has the natural gift of a comic, who can improvise to draw humor out of the unexpected moments during the show, yet knows how to keep the humor from getting too edgy or a little too stinging. The Academy should do whatever it takes to have him become the regular host, in my opinion. |

Buzzsaw - that is exactly what I thought of as soon as I saw Ben Stiller's act. That scene, with Ed Begley Jr. as the "Invisible" Man, was one of the funniest scenes in any movie, ever. |
