I guess you wouldn't want to let us know where these fine neighbors live? I imagine a series of cars driving over their front lawn every day for a month would not be the right message to send. |

Every time they yell or curse her out, she should definitely file a police report. Maybe they will finally just shut up and leave her be. Seems to me that stating one will make a point of driving over another person's lawn is a threat. Also, there are some very pretty low brick walls that can be built. As long as it stays under 2 feet, she doesn't need a permit. She can then plant a bush behind it. Something fast growing, like a euonymous. |

If you know that the neighbors will take or destroy anything that you put out there, then you should get a video camera. Maybe a web cam would work? Put something out there and you will catch them on video. Bring that to the police, and have them arrested. One time should be enough to stop them. If not, they will just keep getting caught, and keep getting into more and more trouble with the law. |

How about those spikes they use to prevent people from backing-up? (They could be cleverly concealed in a lovely bush of course.) While I am much more of a "sh*t happens, just roll with it" kind of gal...there is a part of me that wants to inflict maximum damage on the other folks' car if they try to do something maliciously! |

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and comments and offers to help (or retaliate! -) the police are now aware of the situation. Forgot to mention that the police have been to the neighbors house on previous occasions when the parents kicked the younger daughter out of the house (don't know the whole story). After discussing the options with her landscaper (who I found out witnessed the first epiosde), he suggested at this point just leaving it because he also thinks that whatever is put in the spot will be stolen/broken/damaged/etc. We'll see what happens. |

Well if there's no grass growing on the spot because of the way the tires keep rolling over it, you won't have to worry about kicking up a nail or two (or 20) with the lawnmower. Roofing nails work best - the broad head seems to encourage them to stand "spike" up more easily. It's also a natural spot to stack up your recycling, lawn clippings and bulk debris on the appropriate pick up dates. |

I do not think you should let the neighbors get one over on your mom. Bottom line. Obviously he has a horrible life and derives some sick pleasure out of pissing her off since it is easier than dealing with what's behind door #1. Caving in could lead to worse behaviour because he knows he can push your mom's buttons and get away with it. I like the idea of placing a big boulder in the biggest pain in the a-- spot for your neighbor's driving path. Even better, paint a smiley face on it in the direction of their house. |

Wow your poor mom. I saw something interesting the other day. It was a wall made with tree trunks. Maybe your mom could look into something like that or railroad ties? I think your mom needs to be VERY careful. If these psychos have no respect for the police they sure won't hesitate to do something drastic. Maybe Jamie can help you set up a web cam. Have it have a sensor so it records when they come on your mom's grass. Have your mom carry a small tape recorder to record anything they say to her. |

Bill - actually years ago we did put bulk pickup in that spot and he threw everything onto our lawn. That was the first time we filed a complaint against him. Like your idea about the nails but I would be concerned for children and animals walkin gthere and getting injured. JTA - where did you see that wall? May be an option. |

take a long piece of rebar, bend it into a very long U and hammer it into the ground, deep into the ground. he wont be able to pull it out. then paint in flourecent orange. it'll be pretty. it should work until the landscaper fixes it with something more permanent.

Is there a local rebar dealer around? (I don't bench anywhere near 350...) One of my mothers neighbors said to just dig a hole where they drive over and they'll eventually throw all of their cars out of balance by constantly going over it.

Newone, -You have a wise landscaper. -Otherwise I read here such good advise, (not!) from a lot of people who have inventive minds but unlike an older woman who lives alone will not have to risk suffering the consequences of unknown actions of unstable nut-jobs who so far are not troubled to loudly curse, threaten, move rocks around and scream at the police. (although I like Soda's suggestion, -good one). Rule of thumb: If you have neigbors who like to scream at the police you should probably leave that hornets nest the hell alone. It's DIRT people. DIRT, -and not alot of that. Remove the almighty sacred title of "property" from the equation, weigh it against a further escalation of what has already begun and make the wise choice. It's like I have a crystal ball. Heed the wise words of Steel or no good will come of this matter. My work is done here. |

Thanks but it's still the priciple (since they are now driving more onto the grass that is remaining). We're close to deciding putting in a railraod tie vertically into the ground with about 2 to 3 feet sticking up - it will be very difficult to remove and if they sideswipe it with the cars so be it. |

And yes, it is dirt but it was once a nice patch of grass which grew fine until these rude people started driving over it. |

I think digging a hole is GENIUS. Cannot be removed. Cannot be vandalized. Cannot be driven over. J.B. |

I agree with JB re: pure genius. Unfortunately, in this litigious age, I can see one of the crazies purposely (or an unsuspecting person accidentally), falling into the hole and hurting themselves. Her homeowners' insurance company won't be happy, and she could even be open to civil action. I think it sucks, because some of my best ideas have involved retribution that would only initiate upon trespass (i.e., laxative-laced in a sandwhich left in the communal fridge at work). I have been advised that setting a "trap", even if the trapee is wrong by walking into it, could be actionable. Now, a hole is different from a low, decorative brick wall or boulder because no one can fall into it, and the intent is landscaping. |

Why not place a Be About Peace sign at that location? Sends a nice double message. |

I solved a similar situation by putting in a nice sandstone wall. Keeps out motorcycles, trucks and all manner of vehicles. |
