Right after my recent reply to Soda on the "Troublsome Neighbor" thread, I noticed that I’m getting close to another milestone of 5,000 posts on MOL... During the past few years this represents a lot of valuable time. I like to think that it was time well spent, but sometimes after reading some of the hateful dialog here, and engaging in some of my own with some of you, I’m beginning to wonder if this pass time is really worth it... One of the things I said was that at my age I know what some of you don’t, and that’s that all of us on this planet are terminal! Think about it… In less than 100 years from today, just about everyone on the planet will be dead. That’s billions and billions of us. And, for most of us reading this post, it’s going to be a hell of a lot shorter time at the key board than that... Do you live like you were dying? So, my question to any of you who might be willing to face the question is,“How many posts do you have left and how do you want to spend them?” |

A better question is: Have you ever made a post without part of it being bold? Just curious. |

I once read somewhere that we should live each moment as if it were our first. I think this is pretty good advice which can be applied to posting as well as other things in life. Remember, all of us may be dead at some point but our posts are still apt to live on somewhere in cyber space. |

AJC has in fact posted without bold letters. And, AJC, my father-in-law always says, "No one gets out of this life alive." Your point is well taken. |

That sounds like a quote from a John Cusack movie. Or one of those feel-good chain emails that get send around and around and around... |

Yeah, when I asked my friend-and-neighbor why he doesn't use MOL, he said the signal-to-noise ratio was too low. That's an engineer-speak way of saying the usefulness is low compared to the amount of time and effort you have to put into it. I reluctantly agree. There's useful information and comeraderie here, but it's only good if you see it as a pasttime, too. And it can get away from you. I'm the biggest evidence of that, and I'm not proud of it. My friend has other pasttimes, and I respect him a lot for that. It's rather like a videogame. When we die, I doubt we will have our post counts or high scores carved on our gravestones.

"all of us may be dead at some point but our posts are still apt to live on somewhere in cyber space" How true. I got to thinking about the old usenet this evening, after digging up the story about Tom R's famous first-on-the-internet post (see the virtual cafe thread about wendy nobglider). I went to the google archives of the usenet groups and found stuff that I posted 9 and 10 years ago. I had done this before, but the record was very incomplete. It's more complete now and I found a lot - a lotta lotta lot. A poignant trip down memory lane, and mostly I feel very good about what I posted. Though some of it is painful to read - thoughts about my career goals, ideas about the future, and so forth that never stood a chance. So it goes. I feel less good about the personal details, including names, of family members that I posted. I wish I could make that go away. This stuff really lives forever, and it makes sense to remember that. When we post here, it's like putting our thoughts into a time capsule. Our great-grandkids could read this. |
