Does such a thing exist? If it does and I take a photo of someone speeding up my street, will the police do anything about it? Was walking the kids to school yesterday and some woman came flying up the hill. When I motioned for her to slow down, I swear she gave me the finger. I'd be more than happy to stand out there every morning and snap photos of the cars speeding by--on their way to the Tuscan School! |

The radar gun has to be calibrated and the operator has to be trained to use it, if the results are going to stand up in court. Nice idea though. |

I have access to a radar gun...we use it at lacrosse camp for the "fastest shot" competition. |

Yes, but I want something that takes a photo of the car and lisence plate and records the speed at the time the photo was taken. Probably cost prohibitive. |

If you just take a photo, and let them see you do it, it will probably freak them out. Then again, if they are moving fast, you won't have time to whip out the camera.

This is something our police auxiliary could be doing -- if we had enough auxiliary police officers, which we don't. Anyone who has the time and inclination to volunteer to help the police department should contact the police department and ask about this program. |

Not talking about whipping it out, Big Poppa. Talking about standing there and waiting for them. Shouldn't have to wait too long. |

I wonder... if you spend a full week out there taking notes on number of cars, times, things like that... if you were to walk into the MPD station and present your information, you might be able to get an officer to show up one morning. THAT would be great - your own private speed trap. It would serve everyone right! I have a similar issue near my house, which is close to the middle school. I fight back by driving at 20 MPH on my way to work, which drives people completely insane. |

There's one of those "YOUR SPEED" signs on Grove Road near the Marshall School. I know it's affected my speed. Maybe the police could put one of those up near the school. J.B. |

I'm going to draw chalk outlines of people,in contorted positions, on the street. I'll also strategically place some of those little orange flags on the chalk outlines to make them look more official. That should make those f'n speeders think a little bit more.... |

J.B. Been there done that, a couple of times since we've lived here. Doesn't make one lick of a difference. Actually watched a guy speed past it at something like 35-40 mph one time. And since the cops never back it up with a speed trap, most people who've been around a while have learned to pretty much ignore it! Case, I'm liking your idea. Only problem is, I can't say for certain that they are actually speeding. Maybe SLK can get me that radar gun. Then I set up my lawn chair at the curb in front of my house and start taking notes! |

There is a traffic safty survey on MOL right now, in PDF form, fill it out and note the speeding on your street. Make copies of the survery and canvass your neighbors to have them join your voice, then present it to the town. I know its not much, but it is something. At least the town is demostrating a desire to identify traffic issues. |

I saw that and I will fill it out. Only problem is, as far as I'm concerned, there's really only one traffic issue, that applies to the entire town and that is the root cause of just about every other traffic "issue," and that is that there is absolutely no visible, systematic enforcement of speed limits--anywhere. So, I don't really think we need a traffic "study," we just need for the cops to get out and enforce speed limits. Yes, I know, before anyone says anything, I did start a petition, and I haven't forgotten, and I've done a little research in to other "grassroots" groups who've taken on this issue. It's just that in my day to day life, I keep forgetting to get it together and DO something. Sorry. |

This is totally possible, they have them in london, where it takes a picture and your speed and the time, and you get the ticket in the mail. I think it would be a great idea. Of course in London, they never change the film, so it runs out and keeps flashing you but your don't get a ticket. |

Get your own radar gun for $25 -- supposedly works on "real cars, bikes, etc." too! (but perhaps spray paint an ominous black with a police shield on it!) http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/601-5350969-0627358?_encoding=UTF8&frombrow se=1&asin=B000EHLB0M |

WendyP, go to the costume rental place on Main Street in Millburn and rent a police uniform. Take a carboard tube and a small box, paint them black, tape 'em together and then jump out from behind the tree. This is guaranteed to scare the beatle juice out of a speeder, plus Mr. P might get a kick out of you in a police uniform. |

Somehow I don't think the police uniform is going to do it for Mr. P. Unless it has a very short skirt and I leave it unbuttoned down to my navel. Boy oh boy, then we could really talk about scaring the beatle juice out of folks! |

I agree 100%! Tom, I like the idea of pointing a hair dryer! Duct tape on tangles of colorful wires and something that looks "lens-ish" and point away.

The business end of a hair dryer looks just like that of a radar gun, especially to a speeding driver. No need at all to dress it "up" with duct tape.

Wendy P, you take the picture of the car passing the "YOUR SPEED" sign. Voila! License plate # and officially recorded speed. No fake uniform needed, although I liked the image. J.B. |

I one time yelled at someone who was my kindergartener's class parent! She sped around the corner onto Osborne, where I was loading my infant into the car. I didn't realize it was someone I knew, just yelled "slow down!" She literally didn't speak to me again all year and then she moved. If she heard/saw you Wendy and then gave you the finger, I would like to think she then felt guilty about her speeding. IMO it's inexcusable, especially when you see kids around. |

Wendy, I called the non-emergency number of M.P.D. several years ago to complain about speeding on Irvington Ave. About a week later, a car was there clocking speed. Give 'em a call. |

This does remind me of an event approximately 1986. I was going to a date in Castleton Corners in Vermont and passing through Wells, Vermont. I was about 7 miles over the limit and the lights went on and I pulled over. In Vt., when you get a ticket, the cop gives a reading about the consequences of not paying the fine. This takes about two or three minutes. Then this cop procedes to explain how he hated to give speeding summones but there was a traffic death last month and then two other people died while driving to the wake-- and on and on. Meanwhile, I'm thinking, just give me the damn ticket. About 1/2 hour later, I'm on my way. At that time, Vermont didn't have reciprocity on points with N.J. so you just paid the $75., kicked the tires and went on with your life. Now, fast-forward 3 years. I get a letter in the mail and a check from the Vermont State Treasurer's office refunding the $75.00. The cop was a private citizen who purchased the equipment with his own funds and wasn't licensed to use it. Ya never know. |

VIG, I'd like to think she felt guilty, but she made a left on to Osborne and sped on down that street too. I watched her go because, honestly, I was so ticked off I was going to follow her and tell her off in person. But she was gone too quickly. J.B. Yes, great idea. So I'll call MPD, complain about the speeding on my street (again), and ask that the speed thing be placed on my street. Once it's here, I'll position myself in a place where I can photograph the car and the speed indicator, set my camera on the "action" setting, and start snapping away! Also, FWIW, I filled out that "Traffic Calming" questionnaire, and just kept talking about the speeding problem, over and over and over again. |
