I was overcharged today at Denco on Springfield Avenue, for the second time this month. The first time it happened, I got $40 worth of gas but my credit card was charged $42. This time, $44 worth of gas magically became $45 when the credit card was run through. Each time it was a different attendant-they both seemed indifferent when I pointed out the error and I had to push them to give me the difference back in cash. I 've been going there for years but have to admit that I've never before paid attention to whether the amount on the charge slip matches the amount on the pump, but I will from now on. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I'd like to think these were honest mistakes, but two times in a month seems more like an MO than a coincidence. |

Here's a tip...don't buy gas there. A while back, they tried to charge the guy in front of me for 20 gallons of gas. Odd thing was his car had a 16 gallon tank. |

I had a screaming meltdown with a guy at the BP on Saturday. He asked me 3 times "Silver"? "Yes, Silver". It was almost an Abbot and Costello routine. TS and I were chatting. When another attendant came over, took the pump out and gave me the receipt, I noticed that my tank had been filled with the most expensive (gold), which is .12 more per gallon. My tank had been completely empty. When I said something to the guy, he said "so what, what's the big deal"? I blew. It was quite a scene. The original guy came running over and handed me the difference right away. I wonder how many other people they do that to? I guess that they have to get rid of the most expensive gas some way. The irony is that when I stop for gas on the way to/from work, I'm alone and always look to see what they are putting in the tank. It's very annoying that people are so dishonest that you have to watch them every second. |

When you get gas, always get out of the car and stand by the pump and watch which grade they give you and the amount (learned this the hard way - see below). Then check your receipt. I had an issue years ago down the shore when I asked for something like $15 and he let the pump run up to about $20 or so. I got out and only had a 20 but said I asked for 15, the guy said I told him to fill it - total BS. I said I was only going to pay the 15, he said buy a candy bar or something to make up the difference-I refused. He said he was calling the police - I gave him the PD's phone number and said I'd wait for them to show. After about 10 minutes (me constantly asking if he called the police because I'd love to speak with them - he never called them) he finally gave me the $5 change. Never been back. |

I was overcharged at Denco twice(is it Denco, or Delta?). Well the one that used to be BP....on Valley St near Memorial Park. I thought once could have been a mistake, but when it happened again I was on to their rip off scheme. In my case I asked for $10 worth of gas and then they pumped $8. (but charged me $10 hoping I wouldn't look at the pump) |

Try using speedpass. I go to the Exxon on Prospect and have never had an issue. Speedpass is linked directly to your credit card of choice.

Must remember not to make a mistake with greenetree's money. I enter all of my gas purchases into my Palm, where I have a program expressly for tracking gas purchases. It calculates mileage, etc. I suspect the attendant sees me and figures he won't get away with ripping me off, so no one has ever tried.

Has anyone followed ril's advice and contacted Essex County weights & measures on this? It is a problem that has been posted here on several occasions. |

Here's the contact info. I don't know where the Denco is, but for those that have experienced this ripoff, call here: Essex County Department of Weights & Measures: 50 South Clinton Street, East Orange, N.J. 07018 (973) 395-8363 |

I contacted Weights and Measures once about a different gas station (in Springfield). They called me back, got more info, checked it out, and let me know the result. (turns out the attendant had not cleared the previous purchase, which is a common error/scam). |

I refuse to use the BP on the corner of Valley and Vaux Hall. On two occasions when they posted the lowest price for regular I pulled in. At the pump I asked them to fill it with regular and was promptly told that they were all out. The first time I was disappointed, but paid up for their mid-priced gas. The second time it happend I said no thanks, told them that this was the second time they had played that game with me, said I would never buy gas there again, and drove across the street to Mobil. I'm largely a Mobil customer. They have never tried such nonsense. And when I'm there mid-week and ti's slow, they say hello to my kids and are kind enough to clean my windshield. |

I meant the gas station on Springfield. Give a person a break for naming the street incorrectly. You are going to give yourself a heart attack. |

This is honestly an eye opener for me. I have always accepted what I am charged at gas stations. I will be more vigilant in the future. Filling up Starship Foley is expensive enough. |

I am posting the same question. Has anyone contacted weights and measures about the stations in question. I will do so if no one else has. However, I don't want to be the 8th. person calling them to repeat the same compaint about the same station. |

John: You should only lodge such a complaint if you have been the victim of short changing yourself. That said, the more people who are victims of short changing who call and complain about being ripped off at a given the gas station, the higher the priority the complaint is apt to receive. Also, consumer affairs may have investigated the gas station once, taken action and assumed the problem was resolved. Further justified complaints after thie initial action has been taken will alert them the fact that they may be facing a chronic problem. If you were intentionally short changed at gas station, you should report it. |
