In drving around the towns last weekend I couldn't help but notice that campaign signs for the BOE race are springing up like daffodils.

Folks, those things are expensive. I think around $3.00 per copy. Where the heck is all the money coming from?

Years ago a friend of ours ran for the BOE. His entire campaign budge was under $500. What does it cost to run for the BOE these days? Do BOE candidates have to provide disclosure to the state like other candidates?

I saw my first "altered" campaign sign...a sign for a solo candidate with half of a sign from candidates running together. I wonder what the candidate cut off the team sign thinks.

"Do BOE candidates have to provide disclosure to the state like other candidates?"

I ran a few years back as well.

The answer to your question is YES. Candidates have to file forms to disclose all income and expenses regarding the campign.

And, I ran, self funded for around $500 and I lost.

Should I have accepted funding, well, I still just do not know. My gut is no. that much money should not be part of local BOE politics, IMO.

It seems that winning local elections is correlated with having the most lawn signs. But I don't know if that's a symptom or a cause.

One of the candidates is a neighbor. There are signs for this candidate peppered throughout the neighborhood.

Would it be obnoxious to put up a sign for another candidate?

Just asking.

ess,

If you feel strongly about a candidate AND wish to publicize it, by all means put a sign up. It would be obnoxious and immature for someone to take exception to you appropriately displaying your support for someone else.

Hank, "obnoxious and immature" is pretty common around here during the election cycles. :-)

Otherwise I agree.

Sadly, I do not feel terribly strongly FOR any of the candidates, but that is based mostly on lack of detailed knowledge of what they stand for. I do, however, feel strongly AGAINST certain candidates, but that alone is not a reason to put up a competing sign.

Better to have a silent lawn, I suppose.

ess,

interesting synopsis..cant say I disagree with some of your thoughts. Try the MOL-meter that I use for local elections...see what candidates get anonymously bashed the most on MOL and give them a closer look.
