I couldn't sleep last night so I went out around 12 or 1am (I work a lot of nights, so this isn't too unusual for me). I came home around 4:30am, and there were seven signs on my front lawn. There were five political signs, a detour sign and a realtor sign (this one was heavy and put in the ground real solid). I didn't realize until later (around 7am) that my house number sign (freestanding) had been taken right out of the ground and is gone. Leaving the other signs on my front lawn was childish and stupid, but stealing my house marker? That's going to cost me money. Not to mention the money spent by the other signs rightful owners, plus somewhere in town there is now a unmarked detour. I know this isn't anything major, but it still has me really steamed. |

Kegel, do you have a kid, especially a girl, in middle school or at the high school? Kids have been doing this for just about ever around here and I suspect elsewhere. In 1979 when we were looking for a house we drove by one place that had about five realtor signs. Not being familar with the area, we thought that was the standard with MLS. In those days most realtors didn't use signs in Maplewood. This was a carryover from the days when the signs weren't allowed. It is a shame about your house number sign, however. |

I don't have any children. It's just me and hubby. The other thing was the timing. It was somewhere between midnight and 4:30. I suspect it might have been "kids," just not middle school or high school aged. I also suspect that alcohol was most likely involved. I've been looking online. I don't even know where to go to replace the sign since it came with the house. It's one of those freestanding ones you see all around Maplewood, black with the numbers in reflective white. I like my house to be well marked (very helpful if you need the police or an ambulance in the middle of the night). This is so frustrating. |

Now that spring is here, I'm sure that you will find plenty spring/summer flyers shoved in your mail slot, one of them will be for a company that makes those signs, we usually get two or three flyers a year advertising the signs. I couldn't tell you the name of the company though, I just toss the flyers, I don't like the signs. |

I think you should report the prank and theft to the police.

Call the police and report this. For all you know, the police may already have recovered your house sign. If so, they will know who the sign belongs to and be able to return it. By calling the police you will also be taking the first step towards returning the stolen signs which appeared on your lawn to their rightful owners. |

If you look at the other thread, it seems that there is mischief afoot. I am for zero tolerance on vandalism. Report it. |

I reported the signs that showed up on my lawn and an officer came by and collected them. This was around 5am. I didn't notice that my house number sign was missing until awhile later (I have no eye for detail I guess). I'll probably go down and report that too, but I'm thinking the sign is gone for good. I found the same type online ($71!!!). Hubby says he's going to plant this one in cement. |

Kegel: You posted that you live near Seton Hall. Is it possible that college students (pledges perhaps) could have done this? It sounds like a typical college student's stunt. |

Some halloween decorations were stolen from my house last year by some freshman on the SHU rugby team. I also live off Irvington Avenue near SHU (except in South Orange). |

I think you should report the stolen house number sign to the police too. It just may show up on someone else's pranked lawn and then they could connect it to you. Just a thought. |
