Why do they constantly block off cars during the rush hour? This morning, the entire back car was blocked off. The conductors don't tell anyone who is boarding the train ... so, everyone walks to the back, sees the magic iron bar that closes off the car, then stands there while trying to figure out what to do. Then the entire hoard turns around and walks the other way .. or takes the middle seat!

After a fellow passenger took a conductor to task for this, he was told that "your ticket entitles you to one seat".

Perhaps there is a rule that there have to be X conductions for Y cars, and if you are a conductor short, then you need to close off a car?

If there is no rule to this effect, then it just reinforces my belief that NJ Transit conductors are the laziest bunch of workers I have ever seen.

LOL

I think there is a rule on the number of cars a conductor can handle. In addition, sometimes a car is blocked because of a mechanical problem such as non-working doors or HVAC system. It is, I agree, aggrevating.

BobK that might be true. However, on the rush hour trains at NY at night they block off the back cars sometimes. I've asked the conductors if they plan on opening up the car and they say no. So and I walk all the way to the front looking for an uncramped seat. When I get to the first car and the conductor there then tells me either that there are seats in the back or that another car has been opened up. I walk all the way to the back and find out that the cars got full enough to warrant in the conductors eyes that they should open up that last train car.

So I'm sorry but I tend to agree with magma on this one. The conductors seem to care more about their laziness than our comfort.

I've seen the exact same thing Alleygater describes. It is absurd from a customer service perspective. And when I did observe this phenonmenon, I also noticed that it wasn't that hard to lift up the bar that closed the back car. No key involved, just lift it up and you're in.

Thought I would pass along that bit of information to the bravest and most frustrated among us.

Has anyone called NJT to find out what their policy is on this? If the conductors are being lazy, then it should be reported. If it is policy, then you can't blame the conductors for following it.

I commute through Hoboken and the only time I have seen them block off cars is during non-rush hour periods. Guess we Hoboken commuters are lucky. :-)

We Hoboken commuters also get two to three car trains as opposed to the nine cars or more on most trains going to Penn Station. However, some of the early morning trains to Hoboken are double or more the length of the regular Hobokent bound train and at least half of the cars on those trains are closed off. Once the train reaches Hoboken, the train is split into two or more trains for rush hour trips out from Hoboken.
