OK, on my way to the always enjoyable and lovely Garden State Sh*tway, in Maplewood crossing Springfield Ave., a person in the passenger seat of the car ahead of me opened the window and dumped a big stream of litter, like from a small wastebasket or something.

Some wrappers and tissues blew across my windshield.

WHAT is with people who treat the outdoors like one big garbage dump? I tried to get their license plate but they made a turn.

Yuck.

Mem-

I am with you on this but don't try to do anything about it or others on these boards will label you "angry" or "sociopathic"....

Does anyone know a nice way to ask his neighbor to pick up garbage on his lawn....

Ugh, I just got in from picking up a whole bagful of drink containers, plastic bags, candy bar wrappers, scraps of paper and cardboard.

People are SUCH pigs I can't believe it sometimes.

mem, wasn't it you a year or two ago who had someone throw a used diaper out of the car, and it landed on your windshield? Nothing has topped that yet, as far as I'm concerned.

Tom - It was me! Except the used diaper didn't land on my windshield - it flew in the window and landed in my mouth.

:-(

You know, you've told the most outlandish stories on MOL. (Remember the hot rocks up your butt at the nail salon?) Are we to believe all of them? I think I do. Maybe it's just your talent for storytelling that makes them seem more outlandish than the stuff that happens to the rest of us. I don't feel comfortable calling you an 8-ball.

Tom,
I was joking about the used diaper landing in my mouth. But I really did have hot rocks perilously close to dangerous areas. What does being an 8-ball mean?

I have found parts of furniture (drawers, desktops) and raw materials like large pieces of steel, plywood, and roofing debris on my lawn. This is one of the downsides of living at a busy intersection, where people clean out their cars or trucks!

The bigger problem is that Maplewood gives you NO options for disposal! These items are not eligible for bulk pick-up or recycling and we have NO access to a city or county dump! How am I suppose to dispose of this GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ???????????????????????

Have you tried putting it out on bulk pickup day? As noted on another thread, they seem to take almost everything, even most of the stuff ("construction debris") that is supposedly prohibited. About the only category they don't seem to take is the "hazardous" waste - i.e. paint cans, propane tanks, etc.

An 8-ball is someone to whom an inordinate number of bad things happen.

But you're not one. You're just a great story teller.

mem is a great story teller...

I noticed all the trash on the train today into the city. Unbelievable, everywhere near the train there were MOUNDS of trash. I don't get it.

yeah, but why should SW (or me for that matter, I live right across the street) have to store junk like that up to a year waiting for a bulk pickup day?

No, I totally agree that you/(s)he shouldn't have to. I only questioned the statement that it couldn't be disposed of that way.

This seems the place for me to decribe a pet peeve related to littering. My husband and I usually coach/manage our son's soccer and baseball teams (South Orange rec teams).

I hate, hate, hate that so many teams finish their game and leave behind water bottles, juice boxes, empty snack packs all over the benches and ground. Why wouldn't the coaches/managers make sure the kids picked up their litter before they leave the area?

I know there is a lot to think about when in charge of a bunch of kids, but yuck, yuck, yuck. These are our fields, no?

If there was ever a compelling reason for the death penalty, littering is it. Such a simple and inconsiderate crime deserves the ultimate punishment.

mjh, very inconsiderate!! I can't imagine the parents not making sure as well! I would never let my son just drop a juice box and walk away!

Littering, followed by residential area speeding, is definitely on the top of my pet peeve list. The total disregard for our neighborhoods is disgusting. Nothing starts off a sunny morning like walking into the middle of the street to pick up a bucket of half eaten KFC.
