My son needs a cricket costume. Yes a cricket costume for a school function and I'm at a loss for how to make one. Tried the internet looking to buy one but all I could find was Jiminy Cricket, which is not the look we are going for. We have tons of cardboard boxes and lots of styrofoam and a couple of weeks to work with. Any ideas? I'd like it to at least look like a cricket without making him look ridiculous.

Thanks.

Edited to add: This post really should be in the "please help" section.

Also, it can be any rain forest insect, not just a cricket.

Well, I would start with at black ski mask.
Then have him walk into a costume store and steal one.

Sorry 'bout that, but seriously, I would maybe start with a black ski mask
that you could attach a couple of black-tubing floppy attenna and a couple
of half sphere black balls to, (to the forehead so he can still see) for eyes. Black face paint and black close-fitting clothes wouldn't hurt also.

Of course the big noticeable thing with crickets is the one pair of "jumpy" legs.
Maybe get some of that black rubber tubing is used to cover hot water pipes, (at Home Depot). -Very light and flexible, -you could punch holes in it, tie one end of each around his waist and the middle of the lower end just above his knees, (with the lower quarter sticking past the front of his own legs, beyond his knees). -That way with the crook of the fake legs sticking out behind him they would walk/move when he moves. -Good luck. Hope you have some time.

also, when in doubt, spray-paint box-cardboard cut into shapes.

NOW, can I have my $300K?
(Again, sorry 'bout that. Could......not......resist.)

I can't believe you're being asked to make a cricket costume!

Here's how they do it in minneapolis:

Pippi was a fly last Halloween. Same premise, different wings. Start with a hooded black sweatshirt. They sell those crazy headbands at a lot of Dollar Stores. I htink Globe on SA might have them.

I see the green wings in the above pic. That's easy, just paint the cardboard, or get green oaktag and pin it to the sweatshirt.

Thank you all. Thank God I'm an accountant and not an artist.

Steel - I admitted that it was a lot of money, so sorry, no check for you. However, if I was really wealthy I'd cut you a check and not think twice.

Is your child the only one who will be a cricket in this production? If not, you might want to check with parents of the other would be crickets so you can coordinate their costumes.

One additional idea I would add to the above is to see if you can find a music button or perhaps a tape and player which will produce cricket sounds.

A mole costume?

Man, it's tough to be a parent these days...Sheesh - I think all my mom had to do was make me look like St. Theresa in one play and Mary Magdalene in another, which, let's face it wasn't hard to do -- no one knows what either of these two looked like...
