http://www.gawker.com/news/park-slope/the-park-slope-hat-spat-read-all-the-email s-166214.php This falls under "you have got to be f-ing kidding me" category. At least in Maplewood the PC is not so noticeable....maybe... This reminds me why I left Brooklyn and never looked back... -SLK

it's truly bizarre. "Hurtful"? The irony of accusations of gender-ism coming from somebody so obviously offended at the word "boy's" cracks me up. |

I am with you my friend. I would also flee any place where parents would put a boy in a hat like that. Any self-respecting parent would be nuts to put a real boy in a flamboyant lid like that one, unless they wanted their kid to grow up to be Elton John. |

That was absolutely ridiculous. A question about a lost hat evolved into diatribes about gender equality and insulting children with large heads? PUH-LEEZE. |

This is the same wacked out group that had some sort of spat that made the news last year! They have a group on Yahoo that you can't join until you are approved. Good luck trying to join though! |

While I disagree with the way society pushes gender modes on children... that's a little much |

One of my ten year old nephews knits! He's the only boy in the 'kniting club' at his school. This rememnds me of one of the song 'William's Doll' from 'Free to be You and Me.' WILLIAM'S DOLL When my friend William was five years old He wanted a doll to hug and hold "A doll ..." ... said William "... is what I need To wash and clean and dress and feed A doll to give a bottle to And put to bed when day is through And any time my doll gets ill I'll take good care of it" ... said my friend Bill "A doll! A doll! William wants a doll! Don't be a sissy!" Said his best friend Ed "Why should a boy want to play with a doll? Dolls are for girls!" Said his cousin Fred "Don't be a jerk!" Said his older brother "I know what to do," said his father to his mother So his father bought him a basketball A badminton set, and that's not all A bag of marbles, a baseball glove And all the things a boy would love And Bill was good at every game Enjoyed them all but, all the same When Billy's father praised his skill "Can I please have a doll now?" ... said my friend Bill "A doll! A doll! William wants a doll! A doll! A doll! William wants a doll!" Then William's grandma arrived one day And wanted to know what he liked to play And Bill said: "Baseball's my favorite game I like to play but, all the same I'd give my bat and ball and glove To have a doll that I could love." "How very wise," his grandma said. Said Bill: "But everyone says this instead: "'A doll! A doll! William wants a doll! A doll! A doll! William wants a doll!'" So William's grandma, as I've been told Bought William a doll to hug and hold And William's father began to frown But Grandma smiled and calmed him down Explaining: "William wants a doll So, when he has a baby someday He'll know how to dress it Put diapers on double And gently caress it To bring up a bubble And care for his baby As every good father should learn to do William has a doll, William has a doll 'Cause someday he is gonna be a father, too!"

If I ever have thoughts about moving to Park Slope, would someone please pull the plug ! After initial thoughts of amusement, this soon turned to astonishment, that there are so many idiots living in the same neighborhood. There should be a law against it. |

The funny thing about this incident and it's spiraling out of control, is that is isn't that far from what happens on MOL. Those who live in glass houses.... I have been amused and then astonished myself at how some threads devolve into non-sensical name calling from fairly benign comments. Just a thought. |

I tried to rename my cats in a gender-neutral fashion so that my young niece and nephew would not attribute boy/girl behavior to beings that have no gender identity. But I've found that it is impossible to find a truly gender-neutral name without inadvertently assigning a level of value to each appellation. I.e., if I call one "Kim" and the other "Sam", is Kim better than Sam on an alphabetical basis? I thought that I'd found a great solution by calling them "Yo 1" and Yo 2" but then I realized that we are an ordinal society, and that the "1" and "2" would not be seen as nominal but a preference ranking. At the end of the day, to teach the children that no creature is superior to another, I randomly address the beasts as "cat", "dog", "moose", "pig" and "cow". Consequently, they tend to say things like "the pig goes meow" but I'll figure out an answer to that one shortly. |

That at first appeared to be a joke but then you realize those people are absolutely serious. What a thing to take offense at. Incredible. But NYC/NJ is the capitol of political correctness. Tread lightly and beware your innocent comments around here lest you be termed a bigot, racist, woman hater, man hater, homophobe, xenophobe, anti christian, anti-dentite, etc. |

I'm with Kent...I think MOL gets close to this at times...different topics, but similar vibe. Maybe because half of us here came from Park Slope! |

These things happen on MOL all the time. People who read some of these threads must think us to be insane. (Or some of us at least) And I am highly insulted by GOP man's comment about Elton John. What would be wrong with having a child grow up to be succesful? Are you saying you don't want a gay child? Or a child that grows up to be rich? Or a child that grows up and wear strange clothing? It’s innocent little comments like this that I find the most hurtful... I wonder if this thread will now turn out very similar to the one featured on the news site. |

Mayor, you must not have children. Otherwise, you would realize how hurtful and judgemental it is to refer, in any manner, to a child and wealth. By even raising the issue of a child growing up to be rich, you immediately assign a value to wealth. The child who hears this now feels the pressure to live his/her life in some expected manner. He/she is no longer free to choose the path that truly speaks to his/her heart. Furthermore, your failure to bring up an example of a poor gay man or a lesbian of any economic standing suggests that the only role model should be wealthy gay men. How are young girls supposed to have any goals when they haven't a chance to be achieve the ideal adulthood before they get out of the starting gate? Never mind the fact that having a role model subjects a child to undue influence. |

Hoops- That is all you have to comment on? Second thought, why am I so surprised? You have bypassed serious discussion to make it personal with me all because I have different opinions than you. Your motto: As long as I don't agree with SLK then all is ok, even if my position defies common sense. You probably agree with these Park Slopers and their gender issues over a stupid winter hat. Again, I am not surprised. It would be out of character for you otherwise... -SLK |

No SLK the entire thread is much ado about nothing. I agree fully with what Duncan said. I stick by my statement. |
