Sprawling on the fringes of the city In geometric order An insulated border In between the bright lights And the far unlit unknown Growing up it all seems so one-sided Opinions all provided The future pre-decided Detached and subdivided In the mass production zone Nowhere is the dreamer Or the misfit so alone Subdivisions --- In the high school halls In the shopping malls Conform or be cast out Subdivisions --- In the basement bars In the backs of cars Be cool or be cast out Any escape might help to smooth The unattractive truth But the suburbs have no charms to soothe The restless dreams of youth Drawn like moths we drift into the city The timeless old attraction Cruising for the action Lit up like a firefly Just to feel the living night Some will sell their dreams for small desires Or lose the race to rats Get caught in ticking traps And start to dream of somewhere To relax their restless flight Somewhere out of a memory Of lighted streets on quiet nights... |

Bettyd, I used to frequent The World, and The Tunnel, and Save the Robots -- when I was in high school! A prime example of why it's better to raise kids in the suburbs, I guess - LOL!!!

Amanda - Maybe I've met you? How about Area, Danceteria, and all the after-hours places? Once the whole velvet-rope Studio thing faded, the new velvet rope was if you could get in for free and cadge the drink tickets. Remember Baird Jones? He was at every club and always had a bag of free tickets that were worthless. I'm still trying to find someone who used to go to JP's - anyone? |

Area and Danceteria (and Baird Jones too, I think, though I do recognize his name) were a little before my time; my prime clubbing years were 1987-89, junior year in high school through freshman year in college. We were underaged regulars at The Tunnel, The World, Nells, MK, Hotel Amazon on the LES, the revolving location club Milky Way, a place called Rosa's (I think) in Tribeca where I sighted Mick Jones from the Clash. There were also after hours parties held (illegally, I'm sure) at City pools, on Houston Street and Carmine Street. Such a thrill! We never paid to get in at the big clubs (cover charges were like $20, a fortune to us back then) but drink tickets were harder to come by; instead we used to buy cans of beer at nearby bodegas and sneak them in in our purses. Actually, instead of a purse I carried a Rambo lunchbox; better for smuggling beer. I still have that lunch box, filled with old invites and party favors -- wonder if there's a market for "vintage" club kid memorabilia? Some names I remember from the scene: Michael Alig (I had an anonymous crush on him, before he got really outrageous and flamboyantly gay, and of course before he became a murderer), Julie Jewels, James St. James, DJ Duke of Denmark . . . The smaller underground places were (in retrospect, especially) MUCH cooler, and had cheaper covers, like $5, and that often came with live (almost always hip hop) music; I saw the Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, Public Enemy, and BDP back in the day. This was back before gangsta rap took over -- ahhh, the good old days!

We've got flowering trees, gas lanterns, and mafia. And we're close to NYC. Name ONE other place that has that. J.B. |

Sorry to undrift the thread, but: I was born and raised in Manhattan, as were my parents and grandparents. I will always love the city. That said, I adore MSO. For this time in my life, this is a truly wonderful place to be. A friend of mine married and moved to Westchester back when most of us were young and single on the upper west side. We gave her endless grief about "drinking the suburban kool aid." She never said a word to defend herself, so I figured she was toughing it out in misery to save her marriage. Seven years later, a few weeks after I moved to Maplewood, this same friend gave me a call and asked: "So...have you figured out it's better yet?" it took me a few months to realize it, but how right she was! |

Dear Mr. Big Poppa: Go get a life and learn that people have a right to express their opinion EVEN if it's not the same as yours. Who do you think you are to deceide who is deserving or not? You should try Europe, maybe it will expand your horizon. Bajou |

Bajou, I've been to many parts of Europe. I prefer NYC to those countries. However, I'm not trashing those countries on this thread. Rather, you are the one trashing NYC. So, sure, you can express your opinion. And I will express mine...you don't deserve to work in the great NYC and should go back to Europe instead of complaining. |

Dear Big: If you consider stating facts (and might I add backing them up) is trashing then yeah I guess I did trash NYC. I was not comparing NYC with Europe, which you keep doing, but to NJ. You prefer NYC to Europe cause you have traveled to many parts? How can you compare one city to several (I guess you were in more then one country) different counties, cultures, geographical regions, etc.. That is the most ignorant statement I have ever heard. Frankly why don't we stop waisting everybodies time by posting to each other cause I am really not interested in talking with somebody that narrow-minded.

Bajou, Rats and roaches exist everywhere. You didn't back anything up. I never said anything bad about Europe. I like certain parts and cultures. I haven't been to all parts of Europe, and neither have you. However, I have traveled the world extensively and prefer NYC to any other city. Stop trashing or move back. |

oh no, the "you don't like it, you should leave" comment. I think that argument went way beyond what it should and Mr Big was not very nice about it. You (Bajou) were expressing your opinion, the one you are entitled to have, and the initial remark you made about Europe was that you were from there - there was no need for Mr Big (in my opinion, that is) to even bring it to conversation. As Mr Big himself said on his first post on this thread, "when someone moves to a new place, they go through a bit of homesickness and can struggle through the changes. That is normal and shouldn't be seen simply as "bashing"..." - So Bajou, was probably missing her/his nice Austrian town (have to say never saw a country or any city as clean as in Austria), and therefore showed frustration with the NYC rats and roaches! Other wisely used words from Mr Big's first thread, himself again - "Be patient, folks, and help with the transition." So telling them to move back to where they came from, doesn't seem to me as "helping with the transition".... |

To Lou: Thanks so much for your kind words but I kind of feel like I don't deserve them. I have lived in this country for 18 years now and yes Austria is clean but I know that a city as large as NY can never be clean or rat free. It's just not possible. I just would never choose to live there because for me that would not be the quality of life that I look for. NOW POPPA KEEP YOUR PANTS ON!! I said "I look for". Frankly if I could choose I'd be owning a farm in Montana and see the city once a year if that. AGAIN POPS I AM NOT BASHING I AM JUST A WOMAN WHO PREFERS THE COUNTRY TO THE CITY AND YES I AM EUROPEAN AND PROUD OF IT SO KISS MY "HINTERN".... |
