OK. I have no problem if you want my trash. I've done my share of scavenging on bulk pick up nights, myself. I don't even mind your rummaging through my boxes. I don't mind if you leave something you found down the street and decided you didn't want after all. What I DO mind is when you go through my boxes and dump them on the side walk and leave the stuff there strewn all over. I DO mind when you rip my boxes and the stuff you leave falls all over because the container is now useless. I DO mind when you leave your rejects on the street in front of my house instead of on the curb. I DO mind when you take stuff out of boxes and just leave the boxes (which now become recycling that I have to haul back into my house and store for another two weeks) on my sidewalk. I DO mind having to go out at 6am to clean up after the night's work of JUNKY, RUDE, SLOBS when I should be getting my kids ready for school! And yes, I'm writing this post instead of doing the other stuff I need to do because I need to blow off some steam before I interact with my children. Otherwise, they might get some testiness that they don't deserve. When you go through someone's refuse, you should leave the area as you found it! Now I understand why some people spray paint all their refuse after they put it out. This is just ridiculous!

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone was as considerate as we are. What's our next topic. I can't wait. Oh, who is "Mayor McCheese?" Is he another mayor? (from ny'r) |

irl, I was thinking the same thing this morning as I went to back out of my driveway, my bulk pick up was blocking my driveway! All the boxes had been picked through, and just tossed, in the driveway.. |

I didn't have too much of a problem... but I did notice that 3 or 4 items in front of my house were not, in fact, mine! I suspect that someone was scavenging from down the block and changed their mind... but who knows? |

Case I have had that happen too! I think people come from other towns and dump it in front of the house for bulk pick up since they don't have it. |

Irl, If it makes you feel better... last night scavengers were going thru my stuff as the Ice Cream Truck rolled by. I stopped him in the middle of the street and told my 3 year old he could have anything he wanted!! Well.... 10 minutes later and an Oreo Crunch bar... we waved to the angry couple in their minivan as they sat unable to move until he drove off. (Sweet revenge indeed!!) |

This year on our big trash night, someone dumped a propane tank in front of our house beside our stuff. They're not actually legal for bulk pick-up, are they? I was pretty sure we'd have to take to one of the county's special drop-off days, but no, the WasteMgmt guys did take it. Anyway, another form of inconsiderate behavior on big trash night. |

irl - I had a similar situation this morning. I had stacked everything up as neatly as possible, yet, this morning I saw all sorts of stuff all over the place. If people are going to rummage through the refuse and help themselves, they could at least not make a mess. Last night, as I was putting the last of my bulk refuse out, a car screeched to a halt in front of my house. The driver asked me if I had any "good stuff" in there (I really didn't). The whole experience made me feel lousy. |

Last year, our neighbor sat in front of his house while the scavengers came to pick through, to make sure they didn't do any of that nonsense. He joked that his house was full of stuff for the taking, too. A scavenger took him seriously and started headed for the door!

Well this was my first bulk pickup and overall it was a neat experience. The scavengers are sure weird about it. You thought you threw a t-bone to a doberman the way some were. I didn't appreciate them parking in the middle of the street when you try to drive by.... -SLK |

So I came home this evening and, indeed WM had taken everything...even some of the loose stuff that I realized I missed. "Thanks Guys!!" I don't think I've ever seen the BPS's (bulk pickup Scavengers) this rabid before. I know they come around well into the night (the last one I heard was well after midnight), but I've never awakened to that kind of mess before. Anyway, I feel better at the end of the day. This board sure came in handy this morning!

And again, same here. When I returned home, the entire area -- mess and all -- had been completely cleared away. Nice job! |

One year we put stuff out. Some of it (including a headboard) disappeared the night before. The rest the day of (by WM). Two days later the headboard REAPPEARED. Some jerk took it, decided they didn't want it, and brought it back after large item was over. We had to put it in the basement until the next pick-up date. That's just rude. |

Kegel gets the award for the weirdest bulk pickup day story. LOL Case, we always seemed to end up with stuff that didn't belong to us, one year including maybe 100 Polish language magazines. The thing that often got me is that people actually stood waiting while we brought stuff out. At least they could have offered to help. |

We have had scavengers help us bring stuff out to the curb, especially when we were putting out large, heavy items they wanted which could never have left the house otherwise. |

We had quite a lot people picking through our stuff, and they were generally neat. Had put out a wheel/tire in good condition that was here when we bought the house! Someone took that. Old vac, 2 old DVD players (apparently busted to us, but someone took). Mess of boxes from computers, etc. (tendency to save just in case). So gratifying to see the whole mess GONE!!! I can't really complain. It was fun to watch people go through it. 2 years ago we put out an old Mac 6500 (all pieces) and someone came to the door asking for the manual and start up disks (long gone) and we talked bout where she might find same. It is a little funny that some people treat it like a garage sale, as if you're obliged to declare whether a thing works or not. I certainly tell them if asked. Now I can actually walk around in this one room in the basement we're hoping to finish off! |

Cyn- that's hysterical. I was walking up Elmwood on Friday morning and stopped at an old workbench someone had out. Two other women were discussing it. The top was warped and split, but the base was perfect. I remarked on it and one of the women said "yeah, I just need to get the top off since I don't have my truck." We turned it over and the other said "I'll knock on the door and see if they have a screw driver." The other one told her not to, that it's not good to bother the homeowners. She asked why and I said "it's against the rules". She declared that she was going to shame the homeowners into giving her tools. Unfortunately, I was on my way to the train station & couldn't hang around to see what happened. I wish someone would knock on my door and demand that I make my trash more accessible...... |
