Has anyone else dealt with them? I left a bag on the train friday night with new clothes in it, and called lost and found within seconds of realizing. The woman told me the train would go out of service, so it was up to the cleaners to find the stuff and turn it in. When I called back Saturday morning, I was told there was no way the train went out of service, and it probably went back and forth all evening. Furthermore, the lost and found is closed on the weekend so I would have rto wait until Monday. Stuff has not been turned in, so I am assuming it is gone.

I found the system to be very passive. A coworker left his stuff on the LIRR recently and called lost and found. They radioed the train and secured his goods. If they had at least said to me "you can catch that train coming back at X hours" I would have tried to meet the train and talk to the crew.

Oh well. I suspect that the relative passive effort they make to recover goods makes it easier for any dishonest employee who finds stuff to just keep it.

I once left a brand new jacket on the train rack (not track!) and was so upset. I went that night to lost & found and it was there! The conductor had turned it in - I was so happy. I hope you have the same luck.

themp--Had a similar experience with my Palm about 2 years ago. I went to both lost and founds in Hoboken and NY Penn multiple times to no avail. Hopefully your bag was found by an honest person who did the right thing.

The *worst* thing to lose (few years back) was a bag with my daughter's favorite Beanie Babies! Got it back from the Newark station lost & Found! (we were all happy about that!)

From also having lost keys and a jacket once (got the jacket, not the keys) -- the trick is to talk with customer service to find out when the train is serviced -- and where the lost & founds are along the route.

If your train went from NY Penn, (you got off in Maplewood?), your items could be at any of the major stations along the way (say from NY to Dover). If the conductor found it, and was returning to NY Penn -- that's where it could be. If the cleaners found it, in say, Dover -- that's where it could be.

In the worst case -- did you pay for your clothes by credit card - there may be a protection plan - give them a call.

Good luck -- Pete

Thanks. I have heard only Hoboken and Penn as potential spots. No one has said anything about Dover.

I am mad at myself for being so dumb, but I'm a little surprised by the disorganized and uncertain response I got from customer service. Today the lady was telling me that 800 772-2222 was the wrong number to call and make my report. Later I looked it up on the NJTransit website, and that's the number they tell you to use. Each contact creates more confusion.

I once left a textbook on the train and never found it. I checked in with Penn Station and called Hoboken several times. I ended up having to buy a replacement textbook and in my open-book exam 2-3 weeks later I really regretted not having my nicely highlighted book. I hope that you have better luck.

So... lost and found articles can sometimes end up at the Dover station? This is new to me too. We've contacted both the NY and Hoboken lost and founds many times looking for items, always with no luck. Sounds like there may be some people in Dover walking around in some spiffy shoes and scarves.

And for what it's worth, they recently relocated the lost and found in Penn Station to a different area, so you can't just walk in and go shopping for a new wallet or umbrella anymore. (Not that i ever did that, but i'm sure others did.) Now you have to describe the item to an employee, and they go in the back and look for it for you. Which is both good and bad, i guess.

See, they look it up on the computer every time I go in. I haven't seen anything as concrete as a "lost and found" in the traditional sense. Where is it?

It is my opinion that between Maplewood and Dover, no passenger probably took my huge Macy's bag off the rack and walked out with it. I think it ended up in NJTransit hands at some point. Where it went from there is impossible to say.

Left my wallet on the train and the Dover station manager called me at 3 am (i had left my contact info in my wallet anticipating this would happen) to let me know the train cleaning personnel found it. Picked it up the next day.

I went through this for a laptop and bag, and was told it will end up at the Lost End found of the main station the train arrives at (ie either Hoboken, or New York, sometimes Newark (albeit rarely)....if you normally go to/from Hoboke, go right to the Lost and Found counter in the station, during business hours. And have as precise details as possible of when the item might have been found. Everything gets logged in a book, by time. SO they will look in your time range, and NOT ONE SECOND BEFORE OR AFTER your stated time range, so be liberal with the time fram they give you. If the description in the book matches what you tell them, they will go back and get it. You have to do this in person.

We are replying to your feedback of 5/2/2006 regarding subject: Lost and found inaction # L-11158.

The frustration you experienced attempting to get assistance in the recovery of your lost items is noted. We regret that your items were not recovered. After reading your e-mail I contacted our Transit Information Center (TIC). This is the telephone number that you dialed originally.

I was advised that an operator receiving a call regarding an item that was lost for 2 hours or less, will first attempt to find out the train's next movement. This will determine whether or not arrangements can be made to pick up a recovered item immediately. TIC operators cannot contact a train, our Rail Operations Communications (ROC) can contact the conductor via cell phone, provided the train is not in a dead zone.

If an item is recovered there is a process in place to safeguard the item. Unfortunately, the urgency is lessened the longer an item is lost. I have forwarded a copy of this email to our manager, Customer Service Field Operations. I have asked that the procedures used to track lost items be re-examined.

Again, I regret that your items were not recovered. Thank you for contacting NJ Transit.

Sincerely,
NJ Transit Customer Service Team
