It's that time of year again! The train tracks smell like an unwashed overused public toilet in Times Square. We have tried to get to the bottom of this. I remember talks that may or may not have happened w/ Maplewood's head health guy and NJ Transit. Someone, I think maybe George B. might have gotten a sample of stuff dripping from the train for testing. If you're like me, and don't want to gag/vomit unless you really have to - call NJT at 1-800-772-2222 and ask them why when the trains pull up to Maplewood and South Orange it smells like human waste. Also ask them if they still have a permit to dump waste on the tracks. The used to, but maintained that they never had to do it. I have my own theory: I don't really think they are dumping said waste. I don't think they are emptying the toilets as much as they should, or they are not doing a neat job of emptying the dirty old things. Anyway. It just seems strange that it smells really bad when the trains come into the station. Yesterday the conductors were holding their nose as I left the train. I asked them what was wrong. They said, "dunno".

Is this a Maplewood only issue? I've just assumed it was a NJ Transit track-wide problem. It's worse than many subway platforms in the summer. |

TK & Smarty - please call NJT. We had a lot of people call last year and then the smell just disappeared (mem, I remember you saying you drive to work....but feel free to call too! I bet your car smells good)

Yes, last year people called and learned that NJT hires a very expensive company to suck out the waste, and no dumping takes place anywhere, and it's illegal....odd.... Kind of like the smell of Gas across by the Ice Cream store that never goes away. |

Breathe, breathe in the air Don't be afraid to care Leave, but don't leave me Look around Choose your own ground Long you live and high you fly And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry And all you touch and all you see Is all your life will ever be

My carriage house is the closest building to the tracks on the entire line. It used to be where the ticket guy lived and he sold them right out of my now kitchen window. NJT is straight-out lying if they say they don't dump waste on the tracks. I have seen them do it in Mountainstation. NJT is not the most responsive or responsible body. Every year my kids and I used to be covered in poison ivy and I kept begging them to spray the parkinglot area. The "Stationmaster" kept telling me that there is no poison ivy on the station grounds and they weren't going to spray. Well being the nice girl that I am I went out and picked (with gloves) a lovely bouquet of poison ivy and brought it to that little office in Hoboken where you complain. The next day they were out there spraying and ripping it out. Maybe somebody could get a sample of track rocks and have them analyzed. God nows what else is on there. |
