And this thread is a great example of why I'm happy I'm not part of any religion.

"Ninety-nine percent of everything that goes on in most Christian churches has nothing whatsoever to do with the actual religion. Intelligent people all notice this sooner or later, and they conclude that the entire one hundred percent is bulls**t, which is why atheism is connected with being intelligent in people's minds."

"Wait a minute, Juanita. Make up your mind. This Snow Crash thing-- is it a virus, a drug, or a religion?" Juanita shrugs. "What's the difference?"

hey Tom:

First thanks for the smiley face (and yes I do like you too) and secondly the section of text you disagreed with is from a website that is considered to be the top source of info and material to go to if you think of converting.

On the last name issue:

http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/Fact.aspx?fid=10&yr=0&ln=Reingold

And if you really want to get into it:

Judaism isn't like Catholicism with a hierarchy and an authority on what's right and wrong. We have an ancient tradition of footnoting, disputing, reinterpretation, and argument. "Put 12 Jews in a room, and you'll get 13 opinions." The most respected source, if there could even be one, is still disputable. And if some disagree with it, it is not categorically correct.

In my view, if you either have studied and practiced Judaism OR you are of Jewish heritage, then you are a Jew. Some don't look at it that way. Their view isn't more right (or more wrong) than mine.

And thanks for looking up my name. Roughly translated, it means "pure gold" which is kinda nice to carry around.

Hey Tom:

"In my view, if you either have studied and practiced Judaism OR you are of Jewish heritage, then you are a Jew. ...Isn't that exactely what the text said though..

Here it is:
It is important to note that being a Jew has nothing to do with what you believe or what you do. A person born to non-Jewish parents who has not undergone the formal process of conversion but who believes everything that Orthodox Jews believe and observes every law and custom of Judaism is still a non-Jew, even in the eyes of the most liberal movements of Judaism, and a person born to a Jewish mother who is an atheist and never practices the Jewish religion is still a Jew, even in the eyes of the ultra-Orthodox. In this sense, Judaism is more like a nationality than like other religions, and being Jewish is like a citizenship.

Bajou, believe it or not, I may actually do well as a diplomat.

However, I was not in any way attemping to be diplomatic in this thread. (Or in any thread for that matter.)

You should always try to be diplomatic, Mayor. After all... what if someone's feelings were to get hurt? That's a "boo boo" that can't be kissed away!

You will find that most people on this board who fight over every single post actually are actually civil to each other. Some people even get along with each other. It is amazing.

Oldstone,
I didn't realize South Orange was a thousand miles away? And yes I am laughing at you. I don't know whether you are a serious poster or just having fun. When someone posts - this is my last post, and then comes back several times I think they are horsing around. Or does Straw have some sort of special power over you.

Kind of on this same topic - when I refer to the term "libs" does anyone take offense? I don't see this as a derogatory term, but reading this thread has opened my eyes to some of the responses to my posts. Has this term now become derogatory?

It depends who you ask, I suppose... seems like there will always be people in the world eager to take offense and play the wounded victim role.

I hate it when people call me a "stupid mother f*ckr". I mean, really....why do they have to call me "Stupid"????

BTW, I always poke fun at Southerner with photos and he NEVER gets insulted. I grew up being called ethnic slurs (growing up Latino in North Carolina in the 70's and 80's...yikes!), but quickly had to realize they were only words. Words will only hurt you if you let them.

Here is the definition and a note on its usage from freedictionary.com:

Jew
n.
1. An adherent of Judaism as a religion or culture.
2. A member of the widely dispersed people originally descended from the ancient Hebrews and sharing an ethnic heritage based on Judaism.
3. A native or inhabitant of the ancient kingdom of Judah.

Usage Note: It is widely recognized that the attributive use of the noun Jew, in phrases such as Jew lawyer or Jew ethics, is both vulgar and highly offensive. In such contexts Jewish is the only acceptable possibility. Some people, however, have become so wary of this construction that they have extended the stigma to any use of Jew as a noun, a practice that carries risks of its own. In a sentence such as There are now several Jews on the council, which is unobjectionable, the substitution of a circumlocution like Jewish people or persons of Jewish background may in itself cause offense for seeming to imply that Jew has a negative connotation when used as a noun.}

Poppa,
I love them and here's why. It keeps the elite liberals away. I'd rather them stay in their overtaxed, small lot/old house, traffic infested, toll booth paying areas of the northeast. We have already seceded many parts of Florida to the above 60 northeast crowd, but what's funny is these are the same former libs who have helped elect Bush (and I love it).

Please keep the image alive Poppa. Some stereotypes are perfect.

"(growing up Latino in North Carolina in the 70's and 80's...yikes!)"

I lost all racial, political, and any sort of sensitivity in high school. Being Cuban (with a generic last name to boot) in a private all boy school that probably had a median household income at about $500,000 gets you used to things pretty fast.

It actually worked to my benefit. I can now appreciate a good joke.

Tom Reingold (way earlier):

'The rationale (because we always need one) is that if you come to us, it must be because your soul was originally Jewish'

Makes sense. Think of forced conversions down the centuries... Might be a few souls out there who just want to 'come home'.
