Best front page picture ever. An inspriring and moving story. Not at all sappy. Please read it. So pleased to see the editors put this photo on the front page. A simple story about bravery without devastation.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/05/nyregion/05ballet.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

I opened the paper on my lap while riding the E train across Midtown this morning and read and cried all the way to Lexington Ave. Maybe it tugged on my heart more because I have a little ballerina and puffy, flowery costume that I have to fluff out and sew a bit for her recital pictures this Sunday. Or maybe was just a beautiful article that anyone would enjoy.

Wow, I felt the same way when I saw it at 7 am. I read the article and smiled. Great way to start the weekend.

I think we should all take a good look at our lifes and really look at what we complain about and Matt Foley should be banned from eating melon..

The power of good karma is amazing

I thought the exact same thing. My two little girls' ballet recital is in a month or so, and I was just griping last night about having to pay $16 per person per ticket to attend....then I read this. Puts it all in perspective.

hey Zoesky1...not for nothing but didn't you just buy sandals for $100.00? That's 6 tickets right there.

juju - thanks for posting that. Very heartwarming story!

what am amazingly profound statement from a 7 year old:

"Ballet made me realize I can still do stuff that other kids can do. It's a great opportunity to do something new and keep trying and realize you can do something you thought you couldn't do. Even if you feel scared, it's the same for anything: If you don't try, you'll never know what you can do."

when you read a story like this, it puts in perspective how much print is wasted on politics.

No, that wasn't me, Bajou. Re-read that thread. It was Virtual It Girl. However, my objection to paying $16 for ballet recital tickets is that it's a steep price to see your own child perform.

in this instance , the parents whose children are performing would likely pay unlimited amounts of money to see their challenged children perform in a recital. I know I would. You cannot put a monetary value on that.

Absolutely, Pippi. That was my point in bringing it up. Here I was, grumbling about shelling out $110 in ballet tickets (seven tickets in all) to my kids' recitals (on top of tuition, of course), and these parents would have gladly paid thousands if it meant they could see their daughters accomplish something like this. We are so lucky to have what we have in so many cases, but of course it's human nature to take it for granted.

Anybody know???

Bajou, I am no expert on cerebral palsy, having had no experience firsthand with it, but you might try starting here:

Thank you so much. I am wondering if one cannot give a kind of scholarship gift for extra curricular activities to a child that actually wants to go.

I think the greater problem is that these programs do not readily exist, as mentioned, due to insurance concerns of the dance schools. That is a shame. More of these types of programs should be made available

That story made my morning today - I'm glad that other people saw it and felt the same way. The little girls looked beautiful and I was impressed that the volunteers were all high school students.

I just ran across this thread. I'd read the story and loved it, too. I was especially impressed with the teenage helpers - that they were so committed over such a long period to helping the little ballerinas. What a great opportunity for all concerned. I'm glad I found this thread because it reminded me to check out the multi-media clip that the article had mentioned but which I forgot to watch yesterday. Made my day all over again.
