What is the reason for ripping up perfectly good sidewalks on Valley?

Looks like they are being made handicapped (and stroller) accessible--don't know if that was the case before.

A better question: who's idea was it to detour traffic around these construction areas by sending all the cars from heavily traveled Valley Street up in to normally quiet, narrow residential neighborhood streets that are not remotely equipped to handle such a huge volume of traffic (which includes buses and tractor trailers!), where children and dogs are used to very little traffic, and in particular in to a neighborhood that is always badly congested during the hours when people are dropping off and picking up at Tuscan, which means one car at time is barely able to pass through because cars are parked on both sides of the street?

 Brilliant!

Think I might stop by and have a chat with the police chief this morning.

It's about time someone started to take into consideration the impact traffic flow has on dogs.

Traffic should be redirected to roads that are set-up to handle--and used to--that volume of traffic: Roads like Tuscan, Prospect and Springfield. Or, God forbid, get a couple of flagmen to direct traffic in the one remaining lane. But if your perfectly comfortable with putting children at risk, then forget I said anything!

Another fabulous side effect of the poor planning on this one is having to walk out in to traffic on Valley Street to get around the giant, gaping holes on each corner. Even more fun: I had two kids in a stroller!

I respect your right to rant, but stuff happens, and we make temporary accomodations. Not everything is the same every day.

Not only am I perfectly comfortable putting children at risk, I encourage it. It helps them grow strong!

Now, to be serious, all I asked is where traffic should be redirected. I do not live in the area, and I don't go past it frequently. Things like this happen all the time across the country. Work is being done on roads and walkways, and traffic gets redirected to accommodate it. Hopefully it will be a short project, and you won't be inconvenienced for too long.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "Another fabulous side effect of the poor planning on this one is having to walk out in to traffic on Valley Street to get around the giant, gaping holes on each corner. Even more fun: I had two kids in a stroller!" I thought for a minute she was talking about one of the giant gaping holes in SO but then I realized she wasn't!!!! Meand...I'm not laughing at you at all-just laughing at how ironic that people in Maplewood get furious over it happening and us here in SO are so used to it that the threads have long ago died! How sad! Hope you guys have better luck with getting your holes filled and sidewalks back soon-I've had to walk out into traffic on Vose for going on 6 months!

 Good luck!

I wonder if you would all be so non-chalant if they were directing tractor trailers through your normally quiet neighborhood.

There are other options, it's just that the other options would have required more effort and thought on someone's part, and may even have required spending more money to hire a few more construction guys or a couple more cops.

But, you know what, you could be right. I could just be an unreasonable byotch. Guess I've learned once again not to air my personal concerns here on MOL.

Hopefully it will be short project and I won't be inconvenienced when one of the young kids who normally walks to school on a quiet street is run down by someone in such a big rush to get through this haphazard detour that they can't even be bothered to stop at an intersection of two streets (that, of course, is not marked with a stop sign)!

If it were just a matter of me being inconvienced, I could honestly care less. It's a matter of it being a very precarious and risky propostion. Thanks for your concern.

Now I think I'll head over to that other thread about how thoughtless, rude and dangerous NJ drivers are.

I live near Valley myself. We occasionally have to deal with detours coming down our normally quiet street. The dogs don’t seem to mind. My cats appear a little curious about the change. The kids seem to enjoy the novelty of big trucks coming down the street. Since they don’t play in the street they’re unaffected.

Don't get me wrong. Go ahead and complain, and we can all hope this doesn't last long. I'm sure it's a damned pain to put up with. I'm just not convinced there are alternatives. And cost should be a deciding factor in what the alternatives are.

The sidewalks were already built for handicapped access, stroller access, bike access, etc.

It was interesting having to jump into rush hour traffic last night while jogging. At least there was a cop this morning to help me get out into traffic on the way to work.

As hch said, the parts of the sidewalk they are tearing up that I use on a regular basis already did accomodate people with handicaps and strollers.

Valley is a county road so the work must be county ordered. It looks like they are widening the curb cuts. I would assume this is to come into compliance with ADA rules.

Bajou-I would never call you a dumb ***...completely understandable and please accept my apology for jumping down your virtual throat-it's a touchy subject for me.

The ADA was signed in 1990 and protects persons with disabilities from being discriminated against for employment (similar to discrimination clauses in all employment contracts for race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc.). It also requires handicap accessibility on public transportation and in all new construction (meaning elevators, ramps, wide enough doorways, accessible bathrooms, etc.). This also includes sidewalks, which even if the sidewalk on Valley in question appeared to be accessible, it may not have fit the strict guidelines set forth by the ADA-there are specific measurement requirements.

 Dear Meandtheboys,

Have them re-routed up my street. I do not live anywhere near the work, but what the heck, it is for the PUBLIC good and will not last long.

You seem to have a classic case of "Not in MY backyard!"

They are there to cover holes in the ground. Probably made of steel, possibly iron.

Oh, you mean why the plates are there?

Did the News Record say what the construction is for?
