Is OC legal in New Jersey? My sense is that at one point it was, but that the Legislature banned it, mainly because of misuse by criminals (muggers?) and the fact, as pointed out here, you have to know how to use it or you may just make a bad situation worse by really pissing off the bad guy with a non-incapacitating spray.

No idea. And not to take your post lightly, but who cares? Call it bear protection - I'd much rather tell it to the judge than the undertaker, to trot out a trite little aphorism!

I really don't know if it's legal or not, I'm sure it can be checked.... and you should check before you obtain the stuff.

No one should carry anything as a weapon if they are not trained and prepared to use it. Otherwise, you are potentially handing the bad guy something that can be used on you. Forget pissing him off.

Concealed carry permit=Good.

For the ladies or other recoil-sensitive people...a compensated pistol would be best. But at close range a subcompact would be effective too.

Never in NJ would you be able to get a CCW (concealed weapon permit) unless you're very rich and/or very connected.

Also, you can keep the tip of your car key protruding through your fingers and use it as a weapon if necessary. But like other have said - best thing was running and making noise.

For someone that was nearly carjacked? Im pretty sure theyd issue a CCW permit.

I used to work for a guy who had a lot of weapons, he was a fashion photographer, but he wanted everyone who was on his payroll to be familiar with guns - go figure.

When it was my turn I went out with him to the Indiana dunes and spent a few days learning to shoot.

The first thing I learned is that even a .22 has a harsh back-kick (or whatever they call it) and if you aim it and shoot in front of your face you can stun yourself.

Shooting a .45 knocked out my shoulder and cut my ear.

You have to be either very skilled in weapons or standing still and close to make an accurate hit - at least that was my experience.

After my gun lessons I went away with the lesson that I'm not a gun person, and if someone approaches me with a gun I'll run away and scream - like 6yearrez did.

Most weapons are only effective if you're ready for a confrontation or initiating the confrontation.

Most predators want scared and complacent victims (as so many other posters have detailed on this thread) If you're a screaming problem, they'll leave you alone.

Not if they want a hostage post hardcore-felony.

You probably weren't bracing your wrist properly...and .22s have almost no recoil.

And in practice shooting hearing and eye protection should always be worn.

You would NEVER get a CCW for 'almost being carjacked'. If that were the case, there would be nothing BUT 'almost carjackings' reported. (and they'd always be some anonymous black guy doing the crime - you know, keep the conspiracy alive).

Regarding your 'post hardcore-felony' theory... if I were you'd I'd ease off the rap music for awhile. Try easy listening; that might calm you down a bit.

Regarding a pistol being best for the ladies... what can I say? That was the second dumbest thing I've heard you say on this board.

Regarding the fact that you're "pretty sure" you can get a CCW for almost being assaulted - was this the topic of conversation at the prom?

Then again... let's think about this, Glock. Maybe it was a white guy pretending to be a black guy - that way the crime is blamed on the black man and black society is held down YET AGAIN by the evil whites.

It may sound like a longshot... but then again, the 'post hardcore felony' thing sounds like it's straight out of a 50 Cent video. It's almost as sad as some suburban kid naming himself "9mm", you know what I mean?

PS - in case you're curious... yes, I'm going to remind you of your ridiculously idiotic "the white man is the devil" rant for the next year or two. Perhaps to celebrate your reaching the age of 21 I will retire your tirade... provided that Whitey hasn't consipired to send you to prison, of course.

Sorry Glock - I'll repeat - in NJ it is almost impossible for an ordinary citizen to get a CCW. And no, "almost being carjacked" would not be a reason. (Won't get into a CCW or 2nd amendment discussion here - for the record, I own some weapons and would have liked the option in NJ to get a CCW).

Lydia - it's good to see someone who at least tried and realized something is not for them. However, a .22 has virtually no kick and a friend of mine (female) handles a .45 with each so I don't think the person who took you instructed you on how to properly hold the weapon.

Sorry for the thread drift.

I think the point of the thread has been met, though, so there's no problem with some drift... we all have some choices to make, but (at the risk of being repetitive) maintaining awareness of your surroundings is always the best defense.

There's no real need to take this to extremes. IF you feel uncomfortable or vulnerable (perhaps because you recently had a bad experience) there are other things you can do to protect yourself and regain your self confidence.

Trying to get a CCW (Carry Concealed Weapon) permit in NJ would be... interesting. I think it would be easier for you to move to Pennsylvania, quite honestly. Even if you COULD get one, I think it's a stupid idea. The training it would take in order to be effective would usually be better spent in an unarmed self-defense class. You may not always have time to reach for your weapon, but you always have your hands and feet... for running, if nothing else! (Don't get me wrong, Glock, I think guns are WAY cool).

In regards to the security guards who drive around in that car with the yellow light on top....

I've walked past the car a number of times and seen the following:

Car parked and empty. What hours do they work?

Car seat way back, car idling, guard sleeping.

Car parked head into a spot (facing the wall), door open, guard has his head under the dashboard doing who knows what.

Car driving around in tight circles in the top (empty) part of the parking lot.

They seem to prefer the CVS side of the parking lot. Does CVS pay the security company extra to stay on that side of the building?

I read somewhere that 90% of the world's guns are in America.

I suspect that statistically they are almost meaningless when it comes to protecting people.

They also end up killing a lot of innocent people.

Reject the stupidity of guns.

Did this incident really happen? Has anyone confirmed this directly from the MPD? I have been in this lot area ( always park on the hill when shopping Whole Foods) 3-4times after this event was claimed to have happened, and have not yet seen any police cars parked or patrolling, which would normally occur after such a serious incident.

Is this a rumour or a fact?

Maybe you should take a break from your posting and actually READ a thread before increasing your post count.

You're right. One person made up hearing about such an attack, and another person (or maybe the same person using another account) confirmed that she was the victim, correcting the first account. That happens all the time here.

If you doubt the story, call the MPD.

I don't care enough to call Maplewood PD.

I think this is once again an example of someone putting themseleves in a stupid/dangerous situation then getting praised on their courage, etc. etc. for getting out of it.

Like that hiker who decided "Lemme' go hiking by myself...not tell anyone where I'm going, when I plan to be back, and how they can reach me..." who got his arm caught under a rock and had to cut it off...they praised him on his courage and what not...grr. While yes , yes it's not fair to say this stuff to the victim...it's only the truth and that's waht needs to come out in every situation.

Criminals like this "Puerto Rican guy" are opportunists and went after this particular person because she made a number of mistakes which just screamed. "HEY, COME CARJACK ME."

Rastro-

Thank you for the heads-up. Snide comments a bit un-necessary though.

The victim's post is contained in the middle-end of the prior thread. It must have been posted after I read the initial postings. I just read the current page this afternoon.

The question then seems to be whether there are regular police patrols or police cars parked in the lot (guys taking breaks, writing up reports, etc.) Have not seen any when I have been there. May have missed them.

Has anyone seen the MPD patrolling the lot?

Normally I would think patrols would be in a heavy rotation unless this attempt was viewed as an isolated crime of opportunity or the assailant knew their victim.

Hard to believe someone would try it at 11:30 a.m. in a well-accessed parking lot.

Will be there today so I will take another look for a police presence.

So then Glock, your calling the woman who was attacked a liar? Further, you are insinuating that she did something to provoke or deserve this awful invasion? That's just plain sick.

Go find somewhere else to play. Preferably somewhere where your limited knowledge of what actually happens in the real world will be appreciated. The playground with the other 5-year-olds would probably work.

6, so glad you are O.K. and so sorry this had to happen to you. What a horrifying experience. Thank goodness for small favors, like the fact that there were no children in the car!

When we first moved to Maplewood (8 years ago this August), my husband was robbed at gunpoint in Memorial Park on his way home from the train one night the week before Thanksgiving. He described all of the reactions you did. It took a while for him to fully process what was happening, and when he fully comprehended that a gun was being pointed at him, he gave the guy his briefcase and than ran when they guy told him to go, and didn't stop until he was in the middle of Baker Street and flagged down a passing car. Although this didn't happen directly to me, it was very traumatizing for both of us. I received a call at home from a stranger telling me my husband had been robbed at gunpoint (something that never, ever happened the 11 years we were in Jersey City). I had to bundle up my month-old baby and run to the police station. I didn't know anyone and was new to town, and wasn't sure if I wanted to stay. We installed an alarm and changed our locks and were pretty freaked out for quite a while. But, since then, I've not heard of this type of incident happening again.

Needless to say, we are long over it and feel perfectly safe (as safe as anyone can feel nowadays) here in Maplewood.

Unfortunately, this time you were the victim of some random crime. You got away and are safe, and will probably handle yourself differently in the future (like, if you need to be in the back of the car adjusting car seats, you'll close and lock the doors behind you). But I think it's safe to say the odds are pretty good that nothing like this will ever happen to you again.

I've seen the MPD sitting in the upper part of the lot or cruise through it. I have also seen the fire department periodically playing with their new ladder truck in the lot.

They can't be there all the time. This is the reason for the inept security patrol.

OK, everybody has offered their two cents (maybe four or six cents), suggestions have been offered (mostly unrealistic) and the veracity of the person attacked has been questioned (how can something like this happen in Millburn?), etc.

If there is a moral to this story it is that no matter where you are, what time of day it is and how empowered you feel bad stuff happens. Parking lots are dangerous places no matter where you are. People are loading kids and groceries and packages into their car. They may be rushing to get home or to work and are distracted. Most people are probably pretty careful in a Newark parking lot (get in the car, lock the doors and go), but not so much so in Millburn. This is obviously a mistake.

Did 6 look around as she approached the car? Was she aware that the mall management has rolling security (an indication of potential danger)? Did she notice someone sitting in a nearby vehicle? Was someone (for lack of a better term) skulking around the lot? Was it a good idea to assume a vulnerable position in that location?

In the end if she had hopped into the mini-van and taken off it is about 98% certain that nothing would have happened. Adjust the car seats at home or at the day care center.

Am I blaming the victim? I don’t think so. I think her experience is a great opportunity for all of us to realize that no matter where we are, no matter what time of day it is one has to be vigilant.

Six was extremely lucky that the person who attempted to abduct her didn’t have a knife or a gun. If he had things probably would have been a lot worse.

I have been in a number of parking lots in Texas that had a mobile police booth with mirrored windows.
It sits on a plaform that is lifted probably 25' up in the air with a scissor type mechanism.
The cops sit in the little booth with a bird's eye view of the lot.

Apparantly they only sit in there part of the time...just it's presence is a huge deterrent and they can use remote cameras just as easily from up there.

Maybe that was what the fire department was helping with?

Glock - I been wondering for a few weeks now: are you really a 19 y/o college student? Clever set-up. You built your online persona carefully, got some street cred (something that I highly suspect you lack IRL) and then disintegrated into this antagonistic mess.

You are either one of the more clever alter-egos we've had on line who, alas, became overconfident and blew it, or you need to examine what it missing in your life that you spend so much time online, engaging in these silly, little boy games instead of playing with friends your own age.

So then you didn't say this "I think this is once again an example of someone putting themseleves in a stupid/dangerous situation then getting praised on their courage, etc. etc. for getting out of it."

And that doesn't insinuate that you believe that 6 is somehow to blame? That she actively "put herself" in a "stupid/dangerous situation."

As far as my understanding of the english language is concerned, you most certainly are suggesting that the victim is somehow to blame. So it's not so much that the rest of us "make stuff up." It's more like you have no idea what your saying!

The story is contained in the beginning of the thread. As someone suggested, reading might be a good way to get the information you're looking for.
