Power Outage Disrupts Rail Service POSTED: 8:28 am EDT May 25, 2006 NEWARK, N.J. -- A power outage snarled rail traffic between Washington and New York City Thursday morning, forcing NJ Transit to suspend all service on its heavily traveled Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines and stranding thousands of commuters. NJ Transit spokesman Ken Miller said the problem occurred on Amtrak equipment somewhere between Washington and New York, but it was not immediately clear where. Calls to Amtrak's media relations office were not immediately returned. NJ Transit diverted its Midtown Direct service into Hoboken, where commuters can use PATH trains to Manhattan. NJ Transit buses and PATH are honoring rail tickets. Don't know when service will resume, however, folks on the 7:32 from SO to NYC were stuck outside the tunnel as of 9:49 am and are still there! |

Wow - I thought they would have gotten in by now. I was on the 8:22 from So Orange and didn't hear any announcements and the train I was on didn't have any announcements in our car. I didn't realize until we were 5 min. away from hoboken what was up - then had to ask the conducted what happened when I got off the train. I was here at work at about 9:45. Wow. So glad I slept in this morning! |

Radio report says it is a series of tripped circuit breakers up and down the corridor, which means it could take a long time to get the power back up to normal. |

Yes. They routed Midtown Direct tains to Hoboken bhind the stuck train. My train got in on time, at 8:55. but it was supposed to be at Penn Station at 8:55, not Hoboken. I love Amtrak and NJT. |

Yikes. Last night was a nightmare because of power lines and stalled trains, depending on what NJT was telling us at the time. The 9:39 from NYP (which we were told had "minor delays" only as we were boarding) got to South Orange around 11:15 last night. |

Looks like no service back to Maplewood from Penn St. tonight. That service resumes tomorrow. Have to trek over to Hoboken. |
