Seems like a truck barreling down Jefferson couldn't make it, and took out the light. Any one have any more info?? |

Usually it is someone on Maplewood Ave who doesn't stop that causes accidents there. Switching things up I guess... |

He wasn't barreling down Jefferson - I was right behind him - if anything, he was driving about 5 mph (I think he was lost - I also think he was not the best driver ). He attempted to make the right onto Maplewood (aren't trucks not allowed on these streets?) and he was backing up and moving forward numerous times - this was when I went around him and as I looked into my rear mirror, I saw the light pole coming down and called MPD. |

Thanks for the info, newone. I wasn't there but that was the story I was told. Sorry about the pole but I'm glad no one was hurt. My son had his car totaled several years ago in the same spot when someone did barrel down Jefferson. |

This guy had to be lost - he kept stopping on Ridgewood and finally turned onto Jefferson and never went more than 5-8 mph. Traffic was really backing up around him... |

Uhhh, with regard to the offense of "barreling down Jefferson"--Jefferson has the right of way in that intersection. It's deeply counterintuitive, which is why drivers on Maplewood Ave are always wrongly assuming the Jeff cars will yield. But it's true. |

I hear he was actually sent to take out Fred's Gate but got lost and settled for a light pole. |

I've had numerous close calls at Jefferson & Maplewood Aves. One REALLY close call, where I would've been toast if a car happened to be on the other side of the yellow line when I needed to swerve to avoid being hit really hard by a teenager "barreling" right through Maplewood Ave. That time it was ignorance, just ignoring stop signs and red blinking lights all together. But what usually happens is the Maplewood Avenue traffic thinks the the intersection is a 4 way stop. Then they move into the intersection when they think it's their turn, instead of completely yielding to Jefferson Ave traffic. Maybe "Not a 4-way stop." signs on Maplewood Ave would help? |

Or, make it a 4-way stop. I find it very annoying (and dangerous) when I am on Maplewood Ave & stopped at the sign at Jefferson and drivers on Jefferson STOP and then motion me to go first! They have the right of way! Similar thing happens when I'm stopped on Parker and drivers on Maplewood STOP and wave me to make a left turn. They have the right of way! Where did they learn to drive????? or, are they just a bit addled? Most seem to be driving mini-vans or Volvos. |

I thought that the red blinking light meant that you could go in between blinks. My bad. |

A four way stop would cause problems with people coming over the hill east bound on Jefferson. Get four or five cars lined up and their wouldn't be room to stop. I agree with KRNL that people being overly cautious and even polite on Jefferson can cause people on Maplewood to move into the intersection. |

Please, no four-way stops! No one seems to know who has the right of way, and cars either sit forever or just go when they feel like it. There's one on Academy and 3rd (I think) in S.O. and it always seems a bit chancy. I'd suggest painting "stop" in big yellow, reflective letters on the roadway of Maplewood Ave. might be effective. That would certainly be hard to ignore! |

No 4 way and please proceed when you have the right of way. |

Nancy, I had the same thing happen as your son, only I just had minor damage. A car was speeding up Jefferson Ave. right before school was opening and hit me part way up the hill. The crossing guard said she couldn't believe how fast the lady was driving the car. I read her the riot act about how she could have hit one of the kids crossing the street to go to school. If there isn't a four way stop then there needs to be a speed bump on each side of the crossing for the Jefferson Ave. people who have right of way. |
