I, for one, am enjoying remembering how my father used to sing with all his heart, "God Bless America" and "Army Air Corps" and all kinds of patriotic songs, especially on a day like this. I am enjoying that recollection of how proud he was to have volunteered to go fight against Hitler. That was his goal. He really didn't know that he'd come back and be able to go to college, that he'd live through it all. My Mom, finding my Dad in a hospital in France, his lung blown up, nurtured him back to health as a Red Cross nurse. They both made it miraculously through World War II. They believed in civil rights, in freedom, and in many "liberal" causes, but they fought hard in World War II to keep the world safe from the likes of Hitler. I am glad they met, because that's why I have had a chance to be on this earth, and why my sons are here.

My quiet husband, (still alive fortunately) also a volunteer, Viet Nam era, doesn't belt out the war songs like my Dad did. His courage is quieter, more peaceful. He didn't have to go into the thick of battle as my parents did, but he offered to go, to represent his country, in an unpopular war. My dear husband is also a believer in civil rights, human rights and many "liberal" causes. My husband has a hard time thinking about the War, and how lucky he was to survive.

These people I love, who are the closest to me of all, were and are good people. May they be respected and revered, as they are now, but let them be revered by a country realizing how terrible war is, and how it should never be an adventure, but a sad, tragic, if noble endeavor, and a very last resort.

As I do every Memorial and Veterans Day, I watched at least part of HBO's "Band of Brothers" in honor of my late father's service in WWII. He was not with the 101st, but he was airborne and saw most of the same action as that depicted.

God Bless all who served and serve on our behalf, and especially those who paid the ultimate price to keep our freedom secure...

I hope to see all of you at this morning's memorial ceremony on the steps of Maplewood Town Hall immediately following this morning's parade (parade starts at 9 AM, see Virtual Cafe thread for full details).

Unfortunately, we have an ever increasing list of people to mourn this year from World War II Veterans who lived long, active lives and left their positive imprint on our community to at least one person I am old enough to remember as a young child, who was killed while on active duty in our present day armed conflict.

Please come and help us remember them and honor them with our presence.

Nice post, Tulip. I agree with your sentiments on all counts.

My Viet Nam veteran husband is down in D.C. today, visiting some friends (living and dead) at the Wall. I didn't know him during Viet Nam times, and had an opposite view of that war, but I couldn't be prouder of him.

Welcome home, soldiers, and thank you for your service...
