I was driving North on Ridgewood about halfway between Glen and Baker St when I saw what appeared to be a police checkpoint at 12 noon today. Some of the people who had been waved over seemed to have their car seats out on the sidewalk. Was this a car seat enforcememt campaign? What's the story. By the way they let me go right on by with a 5 year old in a Volvo built-in booster seat. |

There seem to be a lot of checkpoints this weekend. On Friday afternoon the County Police had one set up on Cherry Lane just before Northfield. I think they were waving you through if you had a seatbelt on and the inspection sticker was valid. My wife saw them towing a car, presumably uninspected. The police can do this if in the mood instead of just giving you a ticket. Also there was one set up most of yesterday on Route 10 east of the traffic circle in Livingston. Luckily we turned off before the checkpoint. I think there is some federal program passing out funds to local police departments that do these checkpoints. I think it is safety related, but can't remember the details.

There was one on Springfield Ave at Indiana on Friday night. They were pulling over people who didn't have seat belts on. I can imagine that at the same time they look at things like car seats. |

There was one on Valley, in front of Maplewood Pizzeria up to Parker, a few Saturdays back. Best to make sure your inspection is up to date, and you have your seatbelts on at all times. |

I wish that they'd do more car seat checkpoints. The other day there was a car in front of me on SA, with a young, unrestrained child in the back seat. This kid was bouncing up and down, sticking his/her head between the front seats and all over the place. S/he was probably about 4-5 years old. I don't know what the law is, but where the hell is the common sense? |

It's a shame the police have to do this. People should be responsible enough to wear their seatbelts and strap in the kids properly. So many annual car accident deaths could be prevented by this simple effort. Drive safely. |

I drove through the one on Cherry Lane and I couldn't tell what they were doing. I was crossing my fingers though because my inspection was due for renew in april. They looked at me, my car, and my backseat (with child in tow (in a car seat)) and waved me through. The cars they pulled over seemed pretty random. |

I always wear a seat belt but took out the car seat cause it was not sturdy with my child in it. He's 4.5 feet and about 70 pounds. You think they'd ticket me??? |

Guess I jumped to a conclusion on the inspection sticker thing because of what my spouse saw. Still, it is hard to believe that the police would not write this up if they saw it. |

Many states have passed laws requiring booster seats for children up to 8 years old and 80 pounds (37 kilograms), or 4 feet 9 inches (about 150 centimeters) tall.

If there are no rear seats, the child shall be secured in a child passenger restraint system or booster seat, as described in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 213 . In no event shall failure to wear a child passenger restraint system or to use a booster seat be considered as contributory negligence, nor shall the failure to wear the child passenger restraint system be admissible as evidence in the trial of any civil action. L.1983,c.128,s.1; amended 2001, c.244, s.1. 39:3-76.2c. Informational material The Division of Motor Vehicles shall print such materials as to adequately inform the public about the types of child passenger restraint systems meeting federal motor vehicle safety standards.
