Large fire at corner of Springfield Avenue and Yale Street. See the thread in Virtual Cafe.

It comes to me as no surprise that this thread has only 2 posts. (15 if you include those on the Virtual Cafe). The truth is that most Maplewoodians could care less about SA. If this fire happened at a business in Maplewood Center, the thread would reach 100+ the very first night. It is clear that there is little interest as my fellow MOL'ers have felt more compelled to post more comments on threads like "Natl' Spelling Bee", "Angelina delivers...", "South mtn Sex" and " People hollering @ office".
My heart goes out to Gus as my family has used his services for well over a decade. Hopefully he comes back strong.

What is truley ironic is that probably 95% of Maplewoodian's have no clue where this business is even located....even after the fire.

In case the folks reading this at home have lost their scorecards -

Njphilf moved out of town a while ago - made a big deal about it here on the message board.

He returns every once in a while to remind us that we live in a horrible town, and that we all are horrible people.

I guess we're horrible because we like living here, or something like that.

And Njphilf, those of us who live here have been speaking about this in person. I didn't learn about the fire online, I learned about it while standing with an armload of clothing, looking at the boarded up windows and the damage on the second floor of the building. I was relieved to learn that everyone was okay, and upset about the losses suffered by all of the business people.

NJPhilf:

Nohero has a valid point. Not being here, you would not have realized just how visible this fire was. Anyone living in your old neighborhood would have either seen it, and/or smelled it, and/or heard all the sirens. If you were living here in town you would not have needed MOL to see that something was dreadfully wrong.

Thanks to George's primpt response (location/damage/no injuries)in the companion thread in Virtual Cafe, there really wasn't anything left to discuss on line.

I don't think it's because people don't care about Springfield ave. Perhaps a reason there aren't many posts in this thread is many MOLers don't venture into the Soapbox Topics because they don't like confrontations. Soapbox is known for being heated at times.

Harold, njphilf, thanks for dragging this thread into the gutter instead of sticking with the topic. Now it makes sense that it's in Soapbox.

njphilf, it's always so nice when we don't hear from you for a while. Perhaps another lengthy break?

If anyone has any useful additional information to post about these businesses, we'd all appreciate it. Thanks.

#1. Who said I hate the area?
#2. Njphilf is right, 95% of Maplwood does'nt even know where Mr. Gus's shop is.
#3. Maybe we should form a commitee, and discuss this?
#4. Just like James Brown , we really appreciate your wholesome advice!!!!!

What a ridiculous point, "95% of the community doesn't know where Mr. Gus's is." Who cares. Do you know every business in the Village? Does everyone know there's a dance studio about Freeman's? Who cares? The community knows where Springfield Avenue is and has been patronizing it more and more each month. This is about these poor business owners being wiped out by this fire, not about your soapbox about the Avenue.

I swear, my last post on this thread. Infuriating.

I know where Gus's shop was.
I'll ask around and then do a little math, but I bet more than 5% know where the fire was.
And Harold, if you don't hate the town, as you profess, why is almost everything you and njphilf so negative?
And what does hypocracy have to do with it???
Honestly you guys don't seem to contribute anything that isn't, in some form or other, a slam on the town and the people who live in it. I hope to God you went out and voted today Harold. NJphilf, having moved out of M'wood with so much fanfare, obviously cannot.

harold-

You are truly annoying. And houses in Short Hills go for a million, what is your point? Considering the East Side/Hilton Section missed two previous housing boons, 150k houses selling for 400k today isn't too shabby, is a dramatic increase and actually illustrates the improvement of the area.

Duncan is right, you are a negative creep who apparently feels neglected and seeking attention while having no clue about real estate.

You are correct, I shouldn't resort to name calling. But here is a fact you can chew on: You only rear your head when something negative said about Maplewood. What does that say about you?

And I am curious, what are you driving at regarding the two missed housing boons?

Harold:

Have you read the companion thread in Virtual Cafe? If you had, you would know that the building was completely destroyed and that several of the businesses including Mr. Gus' were uninsured. These people stand to lose everything they have worked for. This is a time to spend our energy rebuilding lives, businesses, and structures rather than wasting energy griping.

Psychomom-

Obviously you are trying to pick a fight. This isn't the board to bring on of your typical race tinged rants and how you can make a comparison is beyond me.

Why do you care so much about what goes on in Maplewood when you live in Irvington? You gotta alot of fixing to do over there. Start chopping, especially since you have a ghetto complex.

Au contraire, I am merely pointing to the hypocrisy that I see all the time on this board.

Why do I care about Maplewood??? I grew up there, my mom still lives there, I go to church there and it's 3 blocks from my house, so I like to keep abreast of whats going on.

I don't have a ghetto complex, I live in "the hood" and get along very well with my neighbors. We look out for each other and keep the neighborhood safe and sane.
Yeah Irvington has it's problems but you gotta make a difference where you can and when you can. When I make a ghetto reference it is in reply to the numerous postings alluding to problems the gangstas and such are causing in Maplewood.
