Good update on whats going on at Millburn Mall renovations/business: http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/union/index.ssf?/base/news-1/114966075794750.xml&c oll=1 It's ashame the Bakery is closing doors...I love this place! (but could live without the Deli next door)...any chance we can convince them to move into the empty space in Town? Maybe our re-elected TC officials can get on the ball recruiting business' from Union into our lovely new business districts on the "Ave" in Maplewood? |

This is a shame - no more chocolate babka's from Sonny's or great corn beef and pastrami from the deli. I'm not one to rate takeout food on character or ambiance; Tabatchnik's stuff is the best. Given that they had two locations before (including one in a terrible location and the other not as prominently displayed as it should be), one would think Sonny's could successfully open one larger location but that would undoubtedly require an investment they may not have or want to make. |

I hope they make them reconfigure the driveways. That would make it all worthwhile. |

Bummer. Staples is just ugly and dull, although it will be nice to get printer supplies, cds, etc. without a drive. I liked Sonny's. I have to say, I have never seen anyone inside that pizza place, ever. I could never figure it out. Has anyone tried that fancy kosher restaurant? |

That is going to be a small Staples compared to some in the area. I'm going to assume they won't have much furniture. |

Smarty- I agree...I am going to miss Sonny's--Springfield Avenue would be a great spot for them....too bad...but I would also take Tabatchnicks too...where am I ever going to get that outstanding dinner for two for $10 on my way home from work again? More food than two people could eat and it was always hot and ready for me when I called in and ordered it to pick up... Where am I going to get relish cream cheese???? NO one makes it like T's!!! Too damn bad!! B Is Syd's staying??? |

How big is Staples going to be considering the space of these businesses? |

Consider the Staples in Penn Station - it has to be bigger than that. |

Syd's is staying from what I heard previously. I am also very curious about Larry and Kick 'n Sticks, which is right in the middle of where the Staples is going to be. |

The Kosher restaurant is called Mosaica. Very nice decor. Never eaten there but have heard the food is great. Hope they don't have to move or close. We plan to try it very soon. |

I asked at Drug Fair the other day, and was told that Syd's is staying, as well as the liquor store. |

I think Sonny Amster Bakery and Tabatchnicks moving to Springfield Avenue in Maplewood is a splendid idea. How about moving to South Orange Avenue, SO. |

Going to that mall was like a trip to the year 1963. (In a good way.) And couldn't agree more with all of you about missing both Sonny Amsters and Tabatchnicks. Sonny A's also had great bagels and T's had the best lox and cream cheese. Not to mention the most entertaining staff. Hope they both find a way to stay in business. |

Sonny Amster's should take over the space where Edith's cafe is now. My kids will cry if Syd's closes... |

I always thought that they could have done something cool with that running diamond motif on covered walkway. Like, paint the diamonds different colors, go with the retro, instead of trying to hide it under boring white paint. Now I guess well be looking at a big shiny Staples sign. Glad Syds is still there--that place rocks. |

One of the problems the article mentioned is a number of the businesses never recovered from the bridge mess. Maybe someone should mention to the businesses there are available stores on Springfield Ave they should consider for relocation. I think they'd do just as well there, if not better, then the Drug Fair lot. |

on the ave there are, I think, at least three that I know of. Plus the one in the village where the art dealer/store was. this was my favorite part of the article..
Quote:Christina Moxley, who lives ad jacent to the shopping center in the River's Edge townhouses, said the store closings are "a big loss to the community."
And for all this time I thought it was one word.

Businesses will not do well on Springfield Ave unless more parking is created. |

Absolutely Dougw...they should just tear down that falling apart empty gas station and move paradise to put up a parking lot. Or a KFC. Oh, no, that wouldn't fly. All sarcasm aside you are right...the parking on the ave stinks and the drivers on the ave stink even worse. The number of times I have almost been smashed by people who somehow think it is a two lane road is countless. And the idiots at the auto parts store down in Union.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I will miss Sonny A's...so many kids birthday cakes have come from that place and the Challah bread...yum. Gonna have to get me some soon I guess. |

Good point about the parking on SA. As more stores move in, we need it. There have been many times when my dry cleaning sat in the back seat for a week or two because there was no parking for a quick in/out drop off at Mr. Gus. Why can't a parking lot go in the old Amoco spot? I guess the town would have to buy it. They could put up meters (we don't have any now, do we)? For .10c an hour, I think that people wouldn't mind so much. |
