The bike event on Sunday seems like it had the potential to be a pretty good time, provided you were on a bike. If you weren't and had anything else to do on a Sunday morning (like go to Church or come home), it was chaotic. What was the route? Some of the cops we saw (MIllburn I think, not our gendarmerie) were pretty testy and not very forthcoming with info on how to detour around the bikes to get to a destination. Anyone else have this problem? My wife had to leave her car by the Library on Baker Street and walk up the hill. |

I remember a number of years ago there was some kind of foot race in Millburn. I was with my Grandparents on one side of Millburn Ave and we had to get to the other. The only solution was to go two towns over to cut around and then come back. What should have been a 5 minute trip took over half an hour, plus lots of interesting insults being given by Grandpa in regards to Grandma's driving. I think these town do these events for the sense of community and good PR, but they don't realize that anywhere in Essex County is way too populated to handle this kind of mess. In reference to the "testy" officers, you have to realize they probably like these events even less than we do, and they're stuck out there standing on a corner directing traffic and answering the same complaints all day long. Not that I'm excusing their behavior, I'm just saying I understand it. |

combustion - So you don't run into that frustration again, just want to let you know that there's a foot race in Millburn next Monday around 8pm. |

It was family bike event on SUNDAY MORNING! Get over it. The streets were closed for maybe 1/2 hour to 1 hour tops. Some people actually had to walk for 10 minutes on one of the most beautiful days of the year! What a tragedy!!! Millburn/Maplewood/SO are actually trying to encourage people to ride bikes, help the environment, and ease congestion. All you folks can says is that you were inconvenienced. |

It was a beautiful day and a wonderful family event. My husband, 7.5-year-old and 5.5 year-old enjoyed riding on the streets through three towns. And I was glad I didn't have to worry about them encountering vehicular traffic as I normally do. I'm hoping they do it again next year and the year after and more years to come, so all of us can participate when my youngest is older. Lots of the officers that were riding with the group were helpful and enthusiastic and happy to be a part of a great spring morning. Yeah, they could have done a better job of notifying folks, but I don't think that's a realistic expectation considering the scope of the event and the manpower and money it would take to notify every single person in three separate towns that they might be inconvenienced for an hour or two on a Sunday morning. I agree: there are way bigger tragedies than having to walk a few blocks on a spectacularly delightful morning. |

What a bunch of whiners. I saw banners in all three towns with the date and time of the event. I thought it was well organized and hope they do it again. And I didn't participate. NYC pulls off marathons and bike events that involve tens of thousands -- are we as populated as they are? |

I think I heard (at the Millburn bike shop) that all three mayors were hoping to ride in the event. Does anyone know if they did?

All three were at the event. I think I saw one of the South Orange trustees riding, but I am not certain about the mayors. |

When are we going to have Hummer-racing competitions? Would better reflect our socio-economic values. |

I really wish they would do better advertising. The only banner I saw in Maplewood was in the village. Even more tragic was the lack of banners advertising the "Springfield Classic" which took place on Springfield Avenue last month. Not one banner or sign on the Avenue. What ever happened to the study done on a bike path in Maplewood?

The problem was for people who had other things to do. They should try to accommodate the participants and those who can't. They should do it after Church. A normally 10 minute walk with a baby, without a stroller because you had no idea you would need one that day and foolishly thought you'd be allowed to drive up your street and park in your driveway, is a p*i*t*a*.

Sure, they could do it after church, but then someone would complain about that too. You know the saying: "You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time." Maybe some day, when your little one is older, you'll participate in this great, fun event and see it from another perspective. |

The bicycle events, 5K's, etc. are all lovely events and part of the appeal of these towns, but couldn't the organizers post some signs along the route a day or two before so that people who live nearby could plan accordingly? On a nice leisurely Sat or Sun now I really don't have a problem, but when kids need to get to games, lessons etc., or later on to their jobs, waiting or detouring (if even possible) can really blow the schedule. |

Every single nice event is picked apart by a bunch of kill joys. If you don't like community events inconveniencing you once in a while, then move out to western Jersey to some hideous housing development that used to be a farm.

I guess we'll go for the Saturday Vigil. I know these things are fun and you will see us out there next time. Hell, I rollerbladed through the Lincoln Tunnel for MS in the late 90's. |

Now you can bike ride through it for MS! No rollerblades for that one.

Great news, my friend hit a reflector and wiped out that day. He got up all bloody and battered though and we finished the deal. Then we went to the Yankee game. Quite a full day! |

There were quite a few wipe outs at the bike day- within the first 15 min I saw 4 different crashes involving at least 8 people (every crash involving at least one child). Noone was seriously hurt (I was happy to see helmet use)- perhaps a staggered start or something might prevent these things? I enjoyed the event, but I agree that the route should have been advertised. There is one road in Millburn that will be closed every Sunday- Brookside Dr.? Does anyone have any info on specific times or from what point to what point? I couldn't find this info anywhere. |

Admitedly it was a hot day, but when I passed by Brookside and SO Avenue at about 11:00am last Sunday there wasn't a bike in sight. |
