So my high schooler tells me that a bunch of bands are playing tonight at the SO Library. Apparently this is mostly high school kids performing and high school kids are the target audience. So, why is this happening during finals week at CHS? |

To blow off steam. To not have finals week be all about finals week. To hang out with other stressed out friends and not have to think about finals week. Its up to the parents to let the kids go or not. When I played in a high school band in Massachusetts back in the early 80's we did this, too. It is not uncommon, to me anyway. We usually played in the gym of the school or at a "club" on the campus of Babson College. It was a blast and a great way to let off some steam. |

sac, It's a time to release some stress. I'm sure there is a limit to their playing time. This IS the public library and for a couple of hours I see no harm. They still have to afternoon for study, no?

Hi, I want to apologize to those parents who thought this band concert tonight at the library is not the right time as it is finals week. When one of our pages who belongs to one of the bands asked if he could have it this particular evening, I never asked or knew this was finals week. I do hope the kids will study before they come tonight. Next year, I promise to run it after finals! I agree that school and schoolwork has to come first and foremost. Sincerely, Phyllis Kalb SOPL Program Coordinator |

My dear Nancy.. My son is playing in one of the bands and if they are not ready for finals by today they won't be ready concert or no concert. Thank you for giving the kids the opportunity to be creative.

I was thinking as much along the lines of getting a good night's sleep before exams as about extra study time ... I think it is great for the kids to have an outlet, be creative, etc., but I think Friday night (or could have even started Friday afternoon) after the last exam would have been a much better time for them to do all those things Duncan mentioned. I haven't yet decided whether I'll let her go or not, but I do hope the library folks will be extra vigilant about the ending time in this regard. (I can't recall if it was at the library or some other venue, but there was at least one of these multi-band concerts earlier in the year where it kept going on and on well past the original stated end time and we kept getting calls from the kid's cell phone pleading with us to delay pickup.)

I'm not saying it happens all the time, but I sure try hard to make sure that we don't have conflicts preventing it from even being a possibility. And mine is 14, although I don't know if that really makes a difference in that regard. It makes it harder when the very kinds of activities that parents like to say "yes" to get scheduled at times like these. Maybe some of you are comfortable with these kinds of events on school nights (not just exam nights), but I don't like it very much. I guess I'm just old fashioned. (Or maybe I'm just old ... sigh!) |

Actually, they might do better on the tests just because they aren't cramming. I read something fairly recently which said that current research shows that listening to music before a test is much more conducive to getting good grades than is cramming. The article recommended reviewing up until the afternoon before a test, then listening to music (didn't say what kind or if playing was equally good) and getting to bed early. Apparently that allows the brain to establish the connections necessary to retrieve the material that has been reviewed. Constant cramming and reviewing up until just before the test actually keeps that solidification process from happening and can make it more difficult to retrieve the information. So, have a good concert and get to bed! |

Just came back from the Library and the music is blasting and it looks like the kids are having a ball. |
