I've been thinking about this all week and the only conclusion is that there are parents out there who wish that they'd never had kids and are now trying to kill them. Sound harsh and abhorrent? Well, why else would a driver with a kid who appears to be 9/10, sitting in the front passenger seat, jump out and make a left in front of someone onto Springfield, Prospect, Parker or any of the other streets that people tend to zip down? Or allow a 4-5 year old to bounce around in the back seat, unrestrained? I counted 3 times this week that I was behind an unrestrained young child and 5 times that someone jumped left in front of me. Each time, they didn't clear me by more than 10 feet. Twice, there was no accident because I hit my brakes. Surely they cannot be dumb enough to think that it's safe because I'm not speeding. They are risking the lives of their children. I just figure that they are trying to kill them and make it look like an "accident". Because I sure can't think of any other reason not to drive as carefully and defensively as possible with a child in the car. Please people, if you don't want your children, there are alternatives. According to a poster on another thread, you can drop them off at Morrow for the Turnover Sale. |

Yesterday I encountered a woman who REALLY must hate kids: hers, mine and everyone else's. I was pulling up to my house with my two kids in the car, about to make a left into my driveway (blinker ON), but I paused to let a little girl walking to school cross my driveway first. Once she passed, I started to turn, only to have to slam on brakes to avoid hitting the woman who was trying to pass me ON THE LEFT. And the she had the nerve to HONK AT ME!!!!!!!!!!! And yes, I believe she had at least one kid in HER car. In a sick way I almost wish she hit me. Make her rethink trying to save those 3 seconds of waiting in the future. |

I encountered a similar thing today in the CVS parking lot in Millburn - I was about to turn left into a parking spot when a gold minivan came around me on my left - I nearly ran into her & had to slam on my brakes, all the stuff on my seat went flying in spite of my slow speed - she never even slowed or paused...what is with people passing on the left?! |

Ok, what about the Dad who left 2 kids in the van on Bear Mountain with the suicidal Mom??? (Actually, I think he was trying to do them all in). Beyond sad. |

Tinkrock, Been there. Exactly as you describe it. I actually feel a little anxious when I take a left turn into my driveway most of the time. |

Greentree, Bottom line? I doubt these folks are thinking much about their children at all, nevermind regret. Fact is, many, many people make it in adulthood and parenthood with the same degree of narcissism of a typical 3 year old. Of course, they are just continuing that cycle with their own children who, someone once said, learn what they live. |

To see some of the stupidest, suicidal pedestrians ever, drive from Penn Station Newark along Market Street to Springfield Avenue until you get to Maplewood. I mean whole families with kids in tow jaywalking across 4 lanes of 35 mph traffic. |

Tinkrock, I've had exactly that experience here in Maplewood. Insane. Maybe these folks are "country" like Britney? Grew up that way, and see no reason to change (hey, they're still alive). But then, I also don't know why parents go to the grocery story/mall en famille, and then spend the whole time hollering at their kids' behavior in same. Duh. |

Oh, Cyn. Do not get me started on family trips to crowded, non-chiled oriented places. The mall cracks me up; from what I see, it's usually one parent who is happily bouncing from store to store while the other parent is attempting to herd the bored kids who are acting out accordingly. Is this some warped attempt at "family time"? The best, tho, is Home Depot! If I had a bunch of kids, the first thing I would do is take them in there on a weekend while my spouse and I huddled over a light fixture, paint color, whatever and let them run smack into a cart that has a 10 foot 2x4 sticking out of it. What fun! St. B's has a pretty good pediatric ED from what I can tell. |

Yep. Trade-offs with other parents when in depth shopping/doc visit/motor v is required is less stressful, safer and more efficient (especially in small aisle stores like King's). I don't get it. Some parents are their own worst enemies. |

Here's one for ya. Was coming back from Jersey City right smack in the middle of rush hour on 78. Just after crossing over the GSP, out of the corner of my eye I see an Expedition speeding along in the express lanes. The child in the back seat was not only not in a car seat, he wasn't even buckled in with a seat belt and was standing on the back seat practically leaning out of the completely open window, with just about the entire upper half of his body visible in the window! The kid couldn't have been more than 5 or 6. One big bump, one wrong move, and he's bounced right out that window, not to mention what could happen if mom has to stop short or actually crashes in to something! People like that completely freak me out. And I can never imagine what rock they must have to have been hiding under for the last 15 years or so, not to know how utterly insane that is. |

Another wonderful parent... Driving on 22 early on a Sunday. Traffic is heavy, but not so heavy as to slow things down much. A Parent is carrying their child (probably 3-4) and RUNNING ACROSS THE WESTBOUND LANES to get to the center island stores. One slip and they're both roadkill. Nothing wakes you up faster than the blaring horn of a truck honking at a stupid pedestrian. |

Why is it you need a license to drive a car, but any old brain-dead whack-job can procreate at will--usually starting very early and often! |

What would you do with children of people who were not licensed to procreate? |

Besides, procreation is a natural urge. Outside of California, there is no biological urge to drive. |
