Neighbors down the block chained one of those portable basketball stands to a tree in the berm so that their kids could throw baskets from the street. For some reason it appears that the preferred time to play is in the evening in the dark (seems to coincide with family gatherings). Last night, hubby already in bed and knowing a small infant lived next door to them, I went outside and called over that it was late to be playing. Nice kids immediately quit, commented they were celebrating end of school, and left. Point is--they were just kids walking down the street who stopped to play. In insurance terms, this would be called an 'attractive nuisance' as it invites unauthorized (and potentially dangerous) usage. I felt bad that I had interfered with their fun, but I really wished that my annoyance had reached the ears of the homeowner. |

Wait, is this on a tree by the curb, and not on the homeowners property? If so, I don't think that's legal. Those trees are maintained by the township. If it really bothers you, call town hall. |

No. Call the homeowner first. We had a neighbor (in West Orange) who had a B-ball hoop in their back yard. Neighborhood kids would go INTO their backyard and shoot. The neighbor tried to discourage this by talking to the kids, their parents, and me (home watching when they weren't there to "guard" their net. One day she asked me if I was interested in spliting the cost of a fence on our shared side, which she would lock! I said, why not offer to sell it to the parents of the kids who use it. Her kid wasn't interested anymore. She had a change of heart and just gave it to the neighbors, who set it up in front of their house. No one called town hall. Sometimes when adversarial reflexes are your first response, you miss other solutions. Good luck, these hoops are like pools for hopping in summertime. J.B. |
