I am very helpful around the house, nay, I do virtually everything around the house. Yet, I do not like to make the bed. I will not make the bed. Not sure why, I just don't like to make the bed. Yes, it's nicer to get into a made bed. Yes, it's a small task. I just don't like to do it. Also, I find it impossible to fold a fitted sheet. I fold everything else but I can't seem to fold a fitted sheet. Always turns into a messy ball of fabric. And, I won't make the bed. Is this so terrible? |

Yes, it is terrible. You're being passive-agressive. Make the bed. It will transform your life. |

How DOES one fold one of those fitted sheets? I hate that my folding efforts end up like a big rolled hand muff! It's summer, just throw a sheet over the bed and be done with it. (I admit, my bed get's made about 50% of the time...or maybe 30%, even in the summer). |

J.B - I was about to try to describe how to fold a fitted sheet, but the link does a much better job. Once you do it that way, it's a cinch. I have several friends who tell me to this day they know how to fold a fitted sheet because of me. FWIW, Notehead refuses to make the bed too. Since it's important to me, I suck it up and do it every morning.

The Soullful Mr T, you are wrong!!!! The best way to start the day is to do something well. Making the bed is one for those things. Wake up pee, have a small glass of OJ and then make the bed. It’s a great way to start the day, and when the work day is kicking your butt, and the kids are going nuts. Remember that you are going to relax in a well made bed.

At last I know I'm not alone in not being able to fold those damn fitted sheets. I used to think it was a genetic defect...but now I know I'm not alone and its a great feeling. |

I do that trick but mine don't look so neat. Who folds near a table? it's the only time I get to watch tv. Sometimes I fold as it comes out of the dryer. I try to make my bed but sometimes I don't. Then I feel like a slob. It's my mother's voice inside my head making me feel guilty! If you WANT to make the bed but can't do it for whatever reason, make it easier. Use a bedspread that goes over your pillows, down to the floor. No one will judge you if there are a few lumps...socks, messy sheets, whatever! |

You could go the duvet route, where the duvet's cover is sheet material. Much easier to just kinda throw that thing over the bed. That's what my kid does. Avoids tucking corners and all the rest of it. |

To avoid folding the fitted sheet on from our king-sized mattress, I'd rather remove it, launder it, and put it back on the bed! Also, I'm always the first out of bed, and downstairs having coffee before Mrs Bailey gets up, so she has to make the bed. I planned that years ago.. I hate to make the bed too. :-)

Yes, you must make the bed. It is not optional. An unmade bed is sloppy. It is a very small task that takes less than 30 seconds. Just do it. |

What is a fitted sheet? I never fold my three sheets. It's too windy. Hic-cup. |

"When the baby comes, no one will do it." J.B - you're right But I will let it go. when it really starts to irk me, I know if I ask Notehead, he'll do it for me. But I'd rather have an unmade bed and an extra diaper changed than the other way around, so I'll barter wisely! if I leave early in the morning, before Notehead gets out of bed, I make it when I get home, because it HAS to be made before I get into it at night!

I make all the beds (4 of them as my kids are still little) before my coffee every morning. That rule makes me get it done very quickly. As kids, my brother and I had to make our beds, no ifs ands or buts. If the bed is made the room looks picked up. If the bed isn't made, no matter how clean the room is, it looks messy. Also, I could never go to bed if it were unmade. I did this even when my twins were infants. It really doesn't take that much time. But...of course, to each his own. Regarding fitted sheets... I loathe folding them, and I can definitely tolerate the big ball of fabric that it looks like when I'm done "folding" it. |

I have to admit that it is such a great feeling to settle in at night to a bed that has been made. However, I very rarely make the the bed. I just can't be bothered... |

Hubby and I have different work schedules, so we're rarely up at the same time. Can't make the bed if someone's still sleeping in it. Besides, even if it's empty, I don't really make the bed, I just tidy it a little. As far as folding the fitted sheet, I've never had a problem with that. For some reason I cannot stand vacuuming. Sweeping is fine. Mopping is fine. I don't even mind (on occasion) getting down on my hands and knees and scrubbing the floor by hand. But vacuuming? I hate it. |

I don't mind somewhat lumpy sheets in the closet but an unmade bed has too strong an association with illness/ injury or those not-quite up to the world sick days - so it's a mental health practice to smooth out the sheet & quilt and pile up the pillows. I'm the one about 90% of the time, not just because I'm usually the second one up. Even if the rest of the house is total chaos, it's a quick and satisfying "fix" and I might sneak in a little reading retreat and enjoy the calm feeling of sitting on top of a neat bed with fluffed pillows. |

I don't mind making beds and I actually don't feel life is complete unless they are made. Seeing an unmade bed in the afternoon bugs me... What I can't stand is putting a duvet cover back on the main blanket after a wash...I grow very impatient... -SLK |

SLK - Gotta agree with you about unmade beds - I made a "rule" that last one up has to make the bed - my husband makes the bed so horribly, I think it's on purpose. I gave up several years ago and I just make the bed daily. I actually like the routine. It takes a few minutes to shake out the sheets and tuck everything in, and it feels so good to collapse into a "made" bed at the end of the day. I gave up on duvet covers and I just wash the whole thing when the seasons change. I still can't fold a fitted sheet (I tried today following the instructions here) I figure it's OK to have fitted-sheets-balls in my linen closet unless I'm trying to sell the house and strangers are looking in.
