Hi all. How many of you have received letters from the IRS or the State about tax filing issues (2005)? Strangely enough I've come across 4 people in our local area that have received letters about odd things. Talking with some MOL'ers last night put that number to 5. Ours was about a missing signature--I've been wrong before (oh my gosh, now it's in writing on MOL!), but I never missed a detail like THAT before. I think we signed ours. Anyone out there receive a tax letter recently? Knowing 5 neighbors in our own community who received letters seems disproportional to me. -SW |

We got two letters on the same day--one about our 2004 return and one about the 2005 one. Excuse me, I have to finish packing. |

We got 3 letters this year - freaked me out - still freaking me out as a matter of fact. Our accountant is trying to untangle the mess, seems to be problems with the electronic bank account stuff and missing signatures, and I'm 99% positive I signed and dated everything. |

Wow... did you folks use the same accountant across the years? This was the first year we had someone (other than us and Turbo Tax) do the preparation. I wonder if the red flags are due to this? Should I ask who you used? |

We didn't use an accountant. Maybe we should have. Our problem has to do with shares that were transferred to me when my mother died. We have consulted someone, and hopefully it will be straightened out. Or we're off to Brazil.

Anyone else having "IRS contact jitters"? The letters look "real" enough... as does the phone number... |

Got a letter from state saying we owed almost $1000 more. Apparently they didn't credit a pre-payment to my account. Now they owe us money. Wonder if they'll include interest? |

I've received a few letters. Not so scary once you actually read them and figure out what they're writing about. First letter was a few years ago. The problem started way back when I was little, my Grandmother had a joint fund with me. It has since been closed, but Merill Lynch messed up and when they closed that account they put MY social security number on her other accounts. The IRS wanted to know why I hadn't reported money that was listed under my SS number. A phone call to Merill Lynch to fix the SS mix-up and a letter to the IRS (with a copy of Grandma's tax return showing that she had paid the taxes) were all that was needed to fix it. My second letter is a little more embarrassing. After divorcing hubby #1 I kinda never got around to changing my name at Social Security . I have since remarried and changed my name with everyone EXCEPT for SS. IRS sent a letter asking why I filed under one name when SS has me listed under another. You basically fill out the form, explaining that you're a lazy lump who hasn't gotten around to going down to SS to stand in line all day. By the way, I do know that I can do the name change through the mail, but with all the identity theft going on I don't feel comfortable mailing original documents. |

Ok, are you guys getting letters or big packets? I wouldn't be so worried about a letter. A couple years ago I received a huge packet, one that required a response within a few days..........that's something to worry about. Damn you tax man!!! |
