According to this article in the Asbury Park Press, the electrical systems in the Northeast Corridoor need a systematic upgrade, including the basic overhead wiring. Expect more complete failures of the system as heat goes up, the wires sag as they expand from the heat, and circuit breakers trip up and down the line.

Hoboken is by far the better choice even when the power is working. |

And if there are serious problems on the trains into Penn Station, the Midtown Direct will likely be diverted to Hoboken anyway. |

Joan, If I want to go to Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn via Penn Station, why would Hoboken be the better choice? |

While I am tempted to trash the Hoboken line just to keep the passenger load within reason, it is a good line. Trains run pretty close to schedule, it isn't all that crowded most of the time and the train crews tend to be a lot nicer.

Add to it, the Hoboken Line does NOT share the tracks with Amtrak like the Midtown Direct. |

Evidently the Amtrak Line problem will be fixed this week and they predict a flawless summer on Midtown direct, and due to repairs scheduled all summer long, the Hoboken Train is estimated to have regular frequent 30 minute delays, especially during rush hour. ALso, Hoboken trains won't have airconditioning this summer for Reasons Unstated. Also, due to constraints, all Security will be removed from the Hoboken Trains to be concentrated on Midtown direct. And to stay on schedule, they announced Hoboken trains will no longer guarentee scheduled stops. Please take Mid Town Direct. Signed- Regular Hoboken Commuter |

Are you still mad smarty when the MidTown Direct broke-down earlier and we Direct commuters invaded your space (or seats)?

Yes....the cattle that goes to Hoboken is quirky, less refined and a little "Hokie", whereas the Midtown cattle is definitely more clean cut and polished....Midtowners tend to clog the front and the rear of the train, leaving the middle open...where as we hoboken folk spread out evenly, erring on the side of caution to the front car, but you can always find seats throughout. Midtown Directers actually stay seated until the car has arrived at a complete stop.....they are also far more open/inclined to sit in the middle seat, or cram into a two seater unneccessarily..... Like I need that crap? |

Tjohn: It would be more expensive to take the train to Hoboken, then the PATH and then the subway to get to Atlantic Avenue or Pacific Avenue in Brooklyn but given the easy transfer at WTC for a subway train going to either of these stations, it could be quicker at certain times to go through Hoboken and it would definitely be a more comfortable ride at most times of the day. Carla: The same would hold true for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. If you are going to the Bronx Botanical Garden, Penn Station would be the better choice in terms of time required to reach your destination but in terms of comfort, on-time service, etc., going through Hoboken remains a viable option. |
