A thread about another topic has indirectly raised the idea that our police do not have enough to do. Seeing as how we pay so much in taxes, I'd like to see that this local resource be productive as possible. I suggest that we come up with a list and, perhaps when we have enough ideas, it can be delivered to the Chief. I'll start: 1. The mailman walked across my grass to get to the neighbor's house. Is this trespassing? More importantly, have they had a lot of calls from my neighborhood about this problem? 2. The dude from Waste Management dropped something in the street while emptying his barrel into the back of the truck. Is this littering? Releasing toxic substances? Is the spillage increasing all over town? 3. My neighbor told me that she heard someone tell the woman in the chair next to her getting a pedicure that a kid stole a bottle of soda from Kings. Is crime up in town?

If they begin foot patrols in my neighborhood, I'd love to see them equipped with a line trimmer (aka a weed whacker). I mean, they're walking around anyway, right? |

4. I heard the neighbors call each other from within their house. Isn't this violating Maplewood's noise ordinance? |

Someone has been stealing bird seed from my back yard. They keep getting away with this criminal activity. The only reason I haven't called MPD yet is because I'm not sure I could give an accurate description of the perps. "Grayish Brown, with a big fluffy tail" isn't really enough for them to go on. But since they have nothing better to do, I guess I'll call. |

LilLB, I saw that same fluffy-tailed perp eating tomato plants in my garden. If we both call, perhaps the MPD will recognize the seriousness of this offense. |

Uh-oh. Sounds like a spree to me. I like Case's idea. Maybe they can carry little buckets of instant cement and bottled water to fix sidewalk cracks, too. I think it would all fit on their gun belts, no? |

And what about the pornagraphy problem? I hear there are boobs being displayed everywhere. Some have been surgically enhanced. If they break, we might have to call the HazMat team. But from my own personal experience, the homegrown Mapleboobs are the real deal. Maybe the local boys on the job can have some sort of Feel-O-Meter to make sure the mammaries in Mapleberry are nonmurderous? |

There are mysterious holes in the leaves of my hollyhocks and small brown spots on the underside of the leaves. Some of them are even dying from this vandalism. I'm sick of this kind of malicious grafitti on my well-tended flower beds. I'm calling the cops. |

Serious thought: Why is Maplewood's crime rate so freaking low, especially being next door to Irvington/Newark? SO is slightly above the national average but MA is so far below average. Why? I always wondered how the criminals perceive our little town. It seems like they are intimidated by it. Is it because we tough cops? Any thoughts on this? -SLK |

juju: What you describe is surely a gang initiation activity. Act on it now, before Maplewood is awash in this type of destructive violence. Neighborhood watch groups may help, but cops walking the beat and checking all gardens are what's really needed. SLK: Yes, we tough cops all the time, and it seems to be working well. |

Victim: 3 years old, black and white, female, Perp: older, female, brown and grey, about 6 times the size of Victim, long ringed tail, Crime (alleged): Intimidation, creating a climate of fear, hissing and snarling in a provocative manner, physical assault (pushing victime), theft (eating victim's Meow Mix) and destruction of victim's catnip mouse. Creates disordera and litter on garbage day. Recourse: Book it, please. I know where it lives, and I think we can get a warrant. |

SLK, the theroies range from deliberate under-reporting and mis-classification of crimes to good police work. I tend to go with the latter. Greentree's lighthearted thread has become serious. However, one of the things about Maplewood that always impressed me is that the police respond almost immediately if you call and do so with a smile. There is never the "I got better things to do buddy" attitude a lot of police departments project. As such people tend to call the police about anything suspicious, including chomped hollyhocks, and that has a effect on the crime rate. I think the MPD tends to classify some crimes in an unusual way. What a car owner sees as an attempt to steal their car may go on the report as an attempted theft from a vehicle, a less crime I think. However, I am sure that this is done universally. |

That's it - I'm calling 911. Bobbest K is trying to stir up trouble. There is no car theft here. I know because my car was not stolen. And as for those who claim that their cars were stolen - do they have witnesses that the car was where they said it was before the "theft"? Bob needs to be jailed. If MPD starts looking for car thieves, who is going to weed-whack my lawn? |

The police need to come to my house right away, because there has been a lot of loitering. The loitering might not be so bad, but it's what they leave behind...white splotchy doo-blobs all over my driveway!!! The loiterers have actually never been seen, I suspect they have feathers and must have some means for flying. Does anyone know the number for 9-1-1? |

Tom, accepting a cake and eating a cake are two different things. Perhaps he was being polite? Also, I would hope that they did not eat a partially eaten cake that was brought in by someone they did not know. Who knows what a more nefarious person than you (is there a more nefarious person? ) might have put in the cake... |

Actually, I was thinking that he just didn't take his post to the logical conclusion: SOPD don't have the same amount of down-time that MPD do. Which is why MPD had time to have a long enough interaction to be "bad". But, MJ brings up a good point: if there is an increasing pattern of off-topic posts, should MPD be called? |

Sorry, Dunc. I'm catching up from vacation. Nope, it was light-hearted based on some other threads about calling the cops for less than urgent matters. I don't know what happened at your place, but I'm sorry that you've had another incident. Now, I am calling MPD because I don't want to go back to work tomorrow, but if I don't I can't pay my taxes, so I want to get a restraining order against the Township so that they can't hound me if I don't pay. |

Just another idea on why you should call MPD... ALOHA, Ore. - A woman who called 911 to get "the cutest cop I've seen" sent back to her home got a date all right — a court date. ADVERTISEMENT The same sheriff's deputy arrested her on charges of misuse of the emergency dispatch system. Washington County Sheriff's Sgt. David Thompson told KGW-TV of Portland it all started with a noise complaint called in last month by neighbors of Lorna Jeanne Dudash. The deputy sent to check on the complaint knocked on her door, then left. Thompson said Dudash then called 911, asking that the "cutie pie" deputy return. "He's the cutest cop I've seen in a long time. I just want to know his name," Dudash told the dispatcher. "Heck, it doesn't come very often a good man comes to your doorstep." After listening to some more, followed by a bit of silence, the dispatcher asked again why Dudash needed the deputy to return. "Honey, I'm just going to be honest with you, OK? I just thought he was cute. I'm 45 years old and I'd just like to meet him again, but I don't know how to go about doing that without calling 911," she said. "I know this is absolutely not in any way, shape or form an emergency, but if you would give the officer my phone number and ask him to come back, would you mind?" The deputy returned, verified that there was no emergency and arrested her for misusing the 911 system, an offense punishable by a fine of up to several thousand dollars and a year in jail. Thompson said Thursday it was the first case he knew of in which someone called the emergency line for such a personal reason. "That's taking up valuable time from dispatchers who could be taking true emergency calls," he said. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060714/ap_on_fe_st/911_love;_ylt=AuGpd9nD7Adshsb_qrEQ3UOs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3ODdxdHBhBHNlYwM5NjQ- |
