Mayor, perhaps when you've lived as long as Glock and gotten some perspective on how the REAL WORLD works, then you won't be so quick to criticize. You should be happy that you have this kind of online mentoring available... from someone older and wiser.

Gotta agree with Glock here - sparklers are OK, but why anyone fiddles with Roman Candles and the like befuddles me.

There are so many threads on MOL that alert parents to every danger - meanwhile unregulated watered-down explosives is OK?

One firecracker shot off that lands on a very dry roof is a horrible scenerio.

Enjoy your town fireworks - don't try it at home.

Can you get me one of those for the grand finale tonight, Soda! That would be really awesome! So far only one of my children has lost a finger to a firecracker and he is still very speedy on the computer and throws a wicked curve ball. That's why humans are born with ten fingers - in case you lose one or two.

People lose body parts to stupidity. I know someone who shoved his hand in a snow blower because it jammed. I'm sure you can imagine the result. Should we ban snow blowers now? Wait, there's more! In grade school a friend's father ran over his own foot with the lawnmower! He lost a toe. Lawnmowers are obviously too dangerous for the average homeowner to own and operate. Years ago I stabbed myself in the hand trying to open a can of paint with a screwdriver. Does that mean paint cans are dangerous, or screwdrivers? Or both? My point is, idiots (myself included) will always find ways to hurt themselves by not being careful. We can't bubble-wrap the world to save the idiots. We can only hope they choose not to breed.

Well, Combustion, if all the "idiots" stop breeding that will certainly solve the world's overpopulation problem.

"For many, the town fireworks are too late. 9-10 pm on a school night? I understand the desire to have them going when it's dark, but I don't want my kids staying up until 10:30 when they have to get up at 7am."

School night?!?!

They? Just me. And I was off having fun.

My bad. Camp buses, not school buses.

I guy I knew in college actually had a foundrary and made small canons. Most of them were used for the performance of the 1812 Overture, but he sold many to hobbyists who used them for fun. They would fire a concrete projectile made by filling a frozen orange juice container and at short range could take out a small tree. Some people have weird hobbies.

Glock was right. I should not have let my three year old play with that M-80. She lost not just her finger, but her entire right hand, and the use of her arm below the elbow.

Why, oh why did I not listen to his wisdom?

I blew my entire head off once. Yeah, that's the ticket. Then I sewed it back on with dental floss.

Macy's show was a blast. We left our house (I should say, our neighborhood) to our amateur neighborhood freaks, and went and saw the real thing. Crowd control was effective but low-key, and the fireworks were lovely!!
(We stayed overnight in NYC.) If you love the real thing, as we do, you should come see the Macy's show next year.

We bought $300 worth of fireworks in PA. Actually it was buy 1 get one free. We had a great show & all of the neighbors, kids & adults, applauded for the show. No fingers, heads, legs, arms, etc lost. Just a great patriotic time with no police interference!

Every year we are warned to leave fireworks displays to professionals, because it is both illegal and dangerous to have amateurs involved. Tell that to these people:

There is quite a difference between the fireworks you purchase at retail and the ones that used commercially.

Considering that fireworks and firecrackers scare my kids quite terribly at this age, I really find it incredibly annoying when people start putting on their own fireworks displays. At least the planned and scheduled displays can be avoided, but you never know when some goofball down the street is going to start blowing things up.

Also enjoyed the guys who decided to light up some kind of popping flashing thing right next to my 2-year old then trip over him as they jumped backwards away from it as it started going off. What a great show that was!

wnb:

Well said. Inconsiderate, obnoxious behavior.

This type of person probaly also parks illegally in handicapped spots, lets the dog poop on someone else's lawn (without cleaning up), and plays really loud music at all hours in order to annoy the neighbors.

The description of this behavior as patriotic did give me a good laugh though.

The patriotic thing to do would be to obey the law.

Glock, I would have thought you'd say the patriotic thing to do would be to acknowledge that it was wrong, and to do it anyway.

Is it patriotic to obey the law? Where is that written? Is it not patriotic to disobey the law? Where is that written?

Patriot = "One who loves his or her country and supports its authority and interests" as per Merriam-Webster, so therefore Glock's suggestion would be a valid example of patriotic behavior, as a country's authority is most certainly expressed via its laws.

Well. Glock is a hypocrite as noted in Rastro's post above. However, I accept your definition and reserve the right to disagree to the suggestion that it is unpatriotic to light fireworks. It is a little extreme.
