I wish realtors would list the asking price for a home right on the real estate "For Sale" sign out front. How great would that be to be able to drive around and just check out prices while driving by. Whether you are looking to buy or just want to see what houses are generally going for in your area, would be great. I'm always wondering how much a house is when I see it for sale and sometimes it's hard to find on MLS if they didn't post a picture. Why don't they post the asking price out front? Is it against the law, or are people afraid prospective buyers wouldn't step foot inside a house if they didn't think the condition of the outside of the house and the price matched??

Good question. It wastes the potential customer's time to find out the price is not agreeable. But it gets more customers to call, so the realtor sees this as a good thing. That's not customer-focused, in my book.

Well, remember who their customer is. It's not the buyer...

Rastro, I disagree with you slightly. Everytime a potential buyer calls the realtor whose name and number is on the "for sale" sign, that buyer is a potential customer. If the buyer is calling directly, it generally means they are not working through another broker, and the selling broker would love to take him/her on as a new client. I think the whole practice is designed to get more people to call - (1) to try and entice them to see the house and (2) to try and convert them into new customers.

A For Sale sign is good, cheap advertising. It is not necessarily for selling that particular house - but to sell others. For that reason many realtors will keep a sign up long after a house goes under contract.

I wouldn't want a sign on my front lawn saying how much I am selling my house for. Call me crazy, I just think it is crass.

red - I agree actually. As a seller, I would feel uncomfortable advertising it on my front lawn, but I'd bet your neighbors would be tripping over themselves going to the online MLS to check out what you're asking as soon as you put that For Sale sign up. So, they know whether or not you post it out front.

I think if it meant it could mean a quicker sale (don't really know if it would), then I'd do it, even if I felt a little uncomfortable.

I'm looking at this more from the buyer's perspective I think - it just makes it easier.

I don't see a problem with prices on signs. However, I am the type who leaves the window sticker on the new car until it falls off and doesn't take price tags off clothes. :-)

Red: How about a "Take One" box on your lawn with your W-2s?

I seriously hesitate posting this because I feel like 90% of my posts refer to where I used to live, BUT since it's on topic I will. Almost every house for sale in Portland, OR (where we moved from) has a waterproof flyer box that the realtor keeps stocked with flyers that list amenities, interior pictures and prices. It is very effective marketing. In some ways, I think it levels the playing field a bit by allowing buyers to compare flyers to see what's being offered by similar properties. I will say that most properties over a million would not have said box.

The market here has shocked me in many ways. The amount of power that realtors have astonishes me. For example, the fact that you need to have a realtor to rent a house is unheard of where I come from. We had a situation in buying our house that was almost fraudulent in my estimation, with a realtor "inventing" a bidding war.

I'm sure there are realtors who frequent this site, and I don't mean to offend. I loved (love) our realtor. She has been a friend, a counselor, a mom and a great all-around resource for us. I think the service they provide is very valuable, I just wish everyone had the same degree of integrity.

Oregon gal, I don't think there is anything that you are legally required to have a realtor for in NJ. Renting, buying, leasing... I'm pretty sure you can do all this without a realtor.

Rastro, you are correct from a legal standpoint. It's more the way that the systems are set up - a lot of rentals in OR never go on the MLS or have any realtors involved on either end of the transaction.

And I have seen a few FSBO houses around here, but not many.

Sorry if I implied it was required here.
