Sometimes I just scroll through the message board and read whatever catches my fancy. When I post, it's because I feel I have something to say that might be helpful or relevant. However, as you read some posts, it becomes obvious that some people are pretty bitter, judgemental individuals who use forums like these to ply their nastiness. You know how under people's post names it says citizen or supporter? Can we get a third category for the above mentioned people that says D***H***? Maybe we can have a contest to decide exactly what name to call that category of posters!

but then we're claiming they're way beyond redemption and perpetuating their sad karma by labelling them....still, I know what you mean, as I feel the same way about 'more passionate' parts of the board many mornings.

To be honest this is one of the reasons I don't hang around MOL very much any more. I got sort of overloaded with the toxic posting. You can ignore it to some degree, but after a while you just get to realize that you have better things to do with your time than "put up with" a bunch of immature obnoxious jerks. It isn't entertaining, and it doesn't make me angry any more. It's just depressing.

It's a shame because there are mainly good people here, but the critical mass of creeps keeps growing.

Mean-spirited, obnoxious postings under the cover of anonymity seem to be on the rise and the behaviour is a total turnoff not to mention immature. Who needs to come onto their community board and read nasty posts from "supposed" neighbors? It certainly makes one regard their neighbors in a different, tentative way since you never know who is who with anonymous posting.

Maybe a doggie egg and mccheese on a biscuit.

p.s. I am sorry for joking around in your serious thread. Especially since I have been know to lash out at certain posters on occasion. I try not to bother too many people. I apologize if I am one of those posters that makes you want to quit.

Recently, there were a few posts I wanted to respond to, but was afraid of the backlash. To avoid this I sent PL's instead. I think it's kind of sad I had to do that to avoid people being nasty. What if my advice, if publicly posted, could have possibly helped another reader also?

I think the real nastiness is cyclical - it seems to come and go - right now I think we're in a fairly mild stage. Of course, I am more choosy in wht I'll read and even more choosy in which threads I'll reply, but then I lurked for years (laughing at a lot of the nastier posters, if truth be told - they really need to 'get a life', or at least some perspective...).

On the whole this is a more interactive and better self-regulating community than several to which I belong. The other top ranking one is an Aussie women's site that currently doesn't handle political matter - we've never discussed it (the decision to drop political discussion) and it isn't a rule, we're just 'playing nice' and talking about other hard social issues instead.

I find I'm reading Political Soapbox less - it's too local now for me to understand most of what you're talking about. And that's OK - it's your board. I'll swing back when topics change.

Life's about the transitions, anyway...

There's at least one poster who seems only to want to get under people's skin. I've seen posters banned for less offensive crap than this one is dishing out. Otherwise, the board seems pretty benign. Go to the cafe and laugh--that'll show 'em!

It's never nice to be the target of nastiness. I would much rather people be respectful of other peoples views. There are issues that I feel strongly against, and at most I will politely say that I respect their viewpoint, but have another one personally, but if I "know" the poster is someone who lashes out, I will avoid a response all together.

I find the attacks etc childish and really unnecessary.

I must admit, I just posted a meanie-pants post. (That is, historically, one of the more popular terms 'round these parts.) But I only did it because other people are being such meanie-pants to each other and it's bumming me out.

Glock, I disagree. The mean people are labeled as mean. There are plenty of very erudite people on MOL who can post without being caustically sarcastic or downright rude. Quite a few have made the laudable decision to avoid the Political Soapbox entirely.

On the other hand, better to let off steam on a message board than get into a fistfight at a bar!

I'm 100% sure nobody takes my jibes & caustic remarks seriously. I have subpar grammar and poor spelling to boot.

I'm proud to be the resident jackass, self centered imbecile, poor neighbor, buffoon, and social pariah on MOL!

Notey is right Glock.
There are a ton a smart people on this board who are not mean. They just have the self restraint of going into the soapbox where you can read nonsense like this..

Quote:

You make an interesting point, but I'm afraid you have such a utopian view that of course your reasoning makes sense to you. The problem is you believe in the "moderate" myth. Thankfully, your belief system has no access to power these days. But I enjoy reading your bleeding heart posts because they are mostly well thought out

This was just plain condescending and unnecessary. You will notice that most of the "political Soapbox" junkies rarely venture into the other threads. I have never seen joeld post in Arts, Reading Room, Home Fix it. The tend to stay as a pack and insult each other and demonstrat a great deal of intellectual posing.

I have learned much more useful stuff from the smart folks outside the "box". So to say that all smart people on this board are generally labeled as mean, you are mostly referring to the "boxes". You don't seem to take the whole of MOL into acct.

I think it would be mean to label people d*** H***s

You then become a mean person yourself and need the label too!! I say just leave 'em be and don't read it if it upsets you.
