I almost got tagged this morning while running by an apparent security/soccer mom (two kids in tow in the Tahoe, mom wearing her regulation designer sunglasses) going about 35-40 m.p.h. in a 25 m.p.h. area. Mom also had her handheld cell working.

Which brought to mind, almost everytime I see a vehicle speeding, during the school year or after, during the day it seems to be a security/soccer mom, especially if it is near a school.

It seems kind of funny, considering the ones most concerned about traffic safety, speeding, and getting their kids busing due to safety concerns is..... security/soccer moms.

Please explain.

So what gives? Playdate demand stress? Kid activity schedule overkill?

Color of Tahoe?

I seem to spy a similar situation often when I'm in Maplewood village:

a certain woman driving a large black SUV (can never discern if it's a Tahoe or another GMC behemoth) speeding up the road and refusing to slow down for (naah, that's not the right word...paying no attention to...) pedestrians in the cross walks. And usually blathering into a cell phone.

Last time I saw her (maybe four days ago), it was the speed, the lack of attention, the cell phone, AND a large cup of coffee in one hand. I wonder if she was speed-reading one of those Danielle Steel romances balanced on the steering wheel as well.

driving in this area, I loose faith in the human race.
I'm not talking about the highways - it is the local roads.

I drive around w/ a pack of old eggs and throw them at bad drivers. Two if you have the cell phone in your hand.

Try it.

It is the New York City isolated ME mentality. They drive the home prices up but, for the most part - bring you down.

Try driving and parking on Millburn Ave. WOW.

What the heck is a "security/soccer mom?" I got the "soccer" part. But the "security" part--no clue?

I had the same reaction, MeAnd. I *think* it's leftover from the last Presidential election. Pretty much agree with the characterization, and also buzzsaw's attribution of the cause. I know not every person from NYC is like that, but there often does seem to be a correlation on the me-first thing. You see it in the pizza joints and King's too. Even Gleason's sometimes. Actually, I saw it in Whole Foods on Sat in spades (actually, I've seen it a lot there). Little agressive women with perfect hair cuts, and attitude. And then they jump into great big SUVs and all hell breaks loose as they peer over the dash in their oversized designer shades.

Sorry, feeling snotty...

In general, people doing annoying things are often driving more expensive cars than the aggrieved party. (And, apparently, have better hair.)

Just one of those weird little coincidences.

Frankly, I'm not of the opinion that a Tahoe (named in the initial posting) is as expensive as my own vehicle (which I drive with care, foresight, and attention). I'm not even sure that the big mutha Cadillac Escalade (of which I see many) is that expensive, especially when one takes quality of build and durability into consideration. Just a thought...

I for one never notice the "perfect hair-do's," as I am too focused on staying out of the way of these minor maniacs with leaden right feet, cell phones a-chirping in one hand, venti lattes in the other, the steering wheel under the control of the gods of transportation, and the attention span of an amoeba.

In the last election apparently soccer moms "became" security moms due to 9-11.
According to political "mavens".

I live on Jefferson, just below Ridgewood.

Give me a radar gun, a ticket book and a police car.

I will cover the town's entire budget deficit in a day by writing tickets to every moronic, self-centered, neurotic, cell-phone bloviating speeder I see.

And I would really enjoy it.

Chris I'll do the same on Parker. In a year we'll have enough money to completely renovate Columbia HS.

FvF:

I'm glad you emphasized "seems" because I believe you are wrong. While loads of people speed, I don't believe for a minute that "soccer moms" are more likely to commit this offense than others. The last person who posted on this claimed it was "always SUV drivers".

If you see moms speeding more often than others, it may be that they just drive more. That's not the same as saying they are more likely to speed.

I hate the term "soccer moms". There's something derisive about the label, and it's therefore a bit offensive, IMHO. My son plays soccer. So what? I have lots of other roles in life, in addition to cheering him on.

I'm with you there - I'll ticket speeders and non-crosswalk-stoppers on Ridgewood Road in front of Jefferson school and I don't even need the police car.

Oh, and I would really, really enjoy it.

What about some of the police vehicles speeding down Jefferson, Parker and even worse Dunnell! Neighborhood full of kids, no lights on but lots of velocity. Probably trying to prove E=mc2 or trying to catch that security/soccer mom in the Tahoe!!!

I noticed shiny new signs in front of Jefferson School this week. Speed limit is now 15 MPH when children are present. Hopefully there will be some enforcement to back it up. Anyone see if the 15 MPH are around other schools in town? Is this a new town policy? How do speed limits get changed? I support the change, but don't know anything about the process.

" If you see moms speeding more often than others, it may just be that they drive more."

Hmmmm...

Have you ever talked yourself out of a ticket or two?

How complicated is it to convince the town to install speedbumps? On Jefferson, for example?

Sure, kids are in school a minority of the time. But I savor the idea of PERMANENTLY slowing down the beasts who roar around our community at 45 mph, yakking compulsively on their cellphones and not watching the road.

Someone tell me the downside of a strictly-enforced 25 mph speed limit throughout Maplewood. So you get to the nail salon or organic grocery a minute or two later, big deal.

Reject self-absorbed, SUV-roaring, cellphone yakkers.
