It was here yesterday, in my building. The staff knew me and made my iced venti green tea lemonade unsweetened before I even got to the counter. Not a word, no notice, and today: gone! No Starbucks. What am I supposed to do with myself? In the lobby one of the security guards offered, "There's one on Barclay." AS IF!!! It's not about the caffeine and it's not about the taste, it's about the convenience of being able to pop downstairs in an instant for an iced or latte. This is a very bad thing. |

Sorry! Maybe the counter people were promised jobs at other locations and were told not to say anything, though I can't imagine why! |

Thank you all for your support. It does mean a lot. I just can't understand how a Starbucks could be there one day and not the next. And I can't understand how I can find the time to post about it but not call the company. |

please excuse my ignorance but wouldn't a handy Gloria Jeans be nicer??? I prefer them to Starbucks (Starbucks have only opened on Albury in the last year, and I find the coffee horrible. Gloria's on the other hand, is at least drinkable if you're for a chain-coffee - and they know me at all three local stores so I get good service. Hudsons will never get my business as they're rude, overpriced and smell revoltingly sour) My preference would be for you to have our coffee truck near you - Kaz would fix your preferred beverage as soon as she heard you approach, and you'd hardly know she's there. Sadly Coffee Mamma is a one-off as far as I am aware... |

I think I know where las works!? It's amazing, I once counted 5 Starbucks within 5 blocks of there. How do they not cannibalize each other? What’s the business model? I've never felt dumber than when I've ordered decaf at Starbucks. What's the point of taking out the second mortgage for decaf? |

I brought a friend of mine from Florida into the city on her last visit and I had been remarking earlier about how I don't understand how all the Starbucks shops can stay in business - there's one on every street corner. I don't think she believed me until we were waiting on a street corner to cross she said "Now I know what you mean about Starbucks." We could see 3 of them while standing there - all within a 1 block radius. I love Lewis Black who said he finally found the end of the earth. It was when he was in a Starbucks and looked across the street and saw another Starbucks. And, that's how he knew he reached the end of the earth. |

Leave it to Dave to know the answer to my question. Good point too. I have left one Starbucks due to a long line and have walked the block to a less crowded Starbucks. They saw me coming. They must minimize the incentive of store owners (if they have a franchise model..Dave?) to steal customers from other stores.

Good morning! So happy your tea will be back in a few days - I wouldn't have discovered Kaz except for the fact that she's right there where I drive by just before parking at the office. Now I can't get through a tough day without her! Kaz is actually one of Australia's top barrista teachers, so we're lucky to have her. She's also a judge for tea and coffee competitions - making and tasting. I'm sure one of her 'babies' will eventually drift through your part of the world, although how we'll tell, I'm not sure. Meantime, I'll make sure to buy a black spiced chai in your honour today - and sip it, not gulp it!! (and here you have to imagine Duncan's martini icon, because I forgot to copy it before starting to write the message...) |

Ah, Joanne - Thank you, and good morning. I had a really tough day at work today and needed my iced venti green tea lemonade unsweetened to get me through the afternoon, but they are doing construction on all four sides of my building (!) and I hate going out there with all the tourists and barricades so I suffered with twice filtered water. Not the same at all. Tomorrow I shall make the 1.5 block journey to the Liberty Street *$ (the aforementioned Barclay Street location is three blocks away - Liberty Street is the closest one). Andrew, maybe I'll see you there. |

That's the one, Andrew! P/l me if you want to meet on Friday. Joanne, carrying a cooler isn't an issue (I actually do store my spare iced venti green tea lemonade unsweetened in the fridge every morning!), it's the condition of the world immediately outside my building. They really are doing construction on all four sides -- the new state-of-the-art transportation hub being built downtown is going directly below my building! Stores across the street are being vacated for demolition and a modern sheethy monstrosity is going to be erected on Broadway. And there are the tourists who continue to flock downtown in an effort to photograph one another in front of ground zero then enjoy slow constitutionals around the permieter of my building along the partially closed sidewalks while stopping to eye imitation purses being sold by vendors who always manage to set up shop no matter how little sidwalk is left. This is just one little Starbucks in a beautiful old building and since they started blocking the sidewalks there are way fewer tourists which means easy in/easy out. I was really liking the way things were going. They should have made an accommodation to get us through this week. And if anyone has a problem with my rant then you should know: change is bad. Unexpected change is even worse. |

I totally understand the rant - was just thinking that if you could buy in bulk it would make the day easier to bear. Our town of Albury is busy building its freeway bypass - internally, although everyone voted for an external bypass. (Don't ask - too complciated for today to explain what went on!!!) Anyway, for the next 2 to 3 years the northern chunk of our CBD is to be totally disrupted and bissected by massive roadworks at the same time as our southern link with the major national highway is equally cut off with the on/off ramps for the north-south bypass chunks. There are several expressive words in Yiddish!!!! This means that most of us are driving in aimless circles trying to work out how to do our shopping as we have hopeless public transport that doesn't serve those who work in the middle of the CBD. We miss out lunch spots, our quick-bill places, our informal business meeting places etc etc. Yep - I understand! Oh well - am off for a weekend wedding - back on Sunday arvo! Be good, everyone! |

I'm having a problem right now. I haven't slept in days and the amount of caffeinne in an iced grande latte would be perfect to get me through the morning. A sqiurt of caramel would make it ideal. In my old work life I'd head downstairs and be back before anyone knew it. Now? Well, I am yet again posting about my displacedness on MOL. I've come to understand that you can't make sense of certain things in this world. But how a business in your lobby can make the unilateral decision to redecorate mid-week is beyond me. ps: Soda, you'd have liked my *$ the past few weeks. With all the construction going on tourists have had diffifulty navigating from street to building so there hasn't been a line at all. You could be a placid moron with me here.

Thanks, Joan. Due to the construction, however, Liberty street is closer as all building exits are closed except for Broadway. I do thank you all for your concern and would like to update you: My Starbucks was open this morning. Got two iced venti green tea lemonades unsweetened (one for now, one for later) and all was right with the world. They were closed because they had to install an oven. For heating bagels. Nope- Starbucks is not a franchise. All one big, happy owner. And, if you are not happy with service, you call the Corporate office or e-mail them and they send you a bunch of coupons for freebies. You can also get them in the stores if you tell the manager that you are unhappy with anything about your order/service. Dave is right; I read an article awhile back about their urban business plan. You shouldn't have to walk more than 150-200 feet between Starbucks. I broke the habit. Since I like really strong coffee but only do decaf and prefer soy, Starbucks was my only option for awhile. But then other places started popping up and I discovered Dunkin's Turbo Ice. I've never bothered with anything other than coffee products, tho. When I'm in OH with my mom, I got to Starbucks a lot. She likes the double-whipped, mocha -whatever things and they have a gazillion calories. She'll drink a grande and then have a meal. Very handy when you are trying to fatten someone up. BTW -Las, I think that you work in my old building! Across from City Hall Park and Century 21? |

Interesting,Greenetree. If it is your old building, wonder why your TS, who escorts me to my office approx. once every two weeks, has never said oh, Greenetree used to work here? Ess, I agree that you can't get your head stuck in one of those iced venti cups, but I once got my stuck in one. It was worse than being on the Java coast during last week's tsunami (670+ dead/missing). And worse than being in Taiwan during their current typhoon (600+ dead). It was even worse than being a child soldier (250,000 worldwide). Yet all the while, as the emergency crews were prying my out of the venti cup, I kept thinking, Thank the good lord CFA crossed my path to remind me to be thankful I am not in the Middle East (approx 450 (391 in Lebanon)). |

Las - it wouldn't be her way. You could cut off her arm and be standing there spurting blood. She'd grab the nearby leaves of a gladiolus plant and tie it off, thus saving your life. She wouldn't bother to say "I learned this when Greenetree cut off her foot gardening a few years back and the nearest thing was a bunch of gladiolus leaves." Either that or it's not the same building. If you ever just have to tell someone something or you will burst but you have been sworn to secrecy or don't want anyone to know, tell TS. She doesn't pass anything along. Not even to me. She's the world's hugest anti-gossip. It's really annoying.

The Starbucks I was referring to is at the corner of Beekman and Park Row, directly across the narrow part of City Hall Park from what I assume is your office building at the corner of Broadway and Barclay. The two Starbucks are virtually across the park from each other. You could see the facade of one from the other if the trees were shorter. |

Oh, gosh, I know of each Starbucks in the above two posts. Andrew, I work in the building that backs up to the Millenium hotel. That's my Starbucks, and although the address is technically on Broadway, the public entrance is on Day Street near Church. The one at Liberty is in the lobby; that building houses one of the exchanges (and if I ever ventured outside my builing it would be my backup 'bucks). I do know the location inside 100 Church - they have an Estee Lauder company store in that building. Joan, your two locations ar a bit further for a quick break. It's funny - I rarely venture up those three blocks, and to me they are in a completely different neighborhood!
