I drove through Harrison, NJ today (next to Newark). I saw a nail salon that had closed, with "space for rent" signs on it. Could this be the start of a downward trend for this perplexing industry?

They probably got a larger space down the block.

Speaking of nail salons, I think they should close one of the ones in town and open up a Starbucks.

Starbucks turned Maplewood down when the Leo Nail space was available due to the lack of parking. They did their own study and according to their equation, Maplewood did not fit the park, grab coffe, go criteria.

I know of several people who would chain themselves to the doorway before they let a starbucks open in Maplewood village.

I would bet there are as many people (if not more) who would chain themselves to a Starbucks to prevent it from leaving (see las' thread about her starbuck's being gone).

I remember hearing that Starbucks wanted the space but the landlords wouldn't come to terms on rent. I really can't see the parking being an issue for Starbucks. People who would chain themselves to a lamp post are just crazy - Starbucks would be nothing but good for the village. If you don't like the coffee no one is forcing you to drink it.

The Starbucks in Millburn seems to do well, tho it's difficult to park nearby. (And even if you don't like their coffee, there's plenty of other stuff there--sandwiches, pastries, tea, etc.)

If you read Nostradamus carefully, you will see that closing of nail salons and Starbucks are thought to indicate the Armageddon is just around the corner.

I just attended a presentation on consumer trends and one of the themes was a trend toward people trying more to take time out for themselves. As part of that trend, something like 40% of women say they relax by getting a manicure or pedicure. If that data is correct, I'd say we don't have enough nail salons in Maplewood to meet the potential demand.

The Starbucks in South Orange really has no parking to speak of. I would think proximity to a train station is far more important to Starbucks than parking.

Tom-

I think you would have to dress in drag to better explore this.

Men go to these salons. I'm just asking who would take down a business and put another up. It makes it sound like we have a command economy where the government decides who sells what and in what quantity.

"I'm just asking who would take down a business and put another up."
