So I have these two chairs of substantial size and heft that I would like to donate. I called the Salvation Army and asked if I might donate said chairs, and if someone might pick them up from my house.

I was told no, they won't come for two chairs.

No, I replied, incredulously. What will they come for, I wondered aloud.

The man on the other end told me that they will only come for clothing and furniture.

Now, unless something changed recently, chairs are considered furniture. I reminded the man of this fact. He stuck to his guns: clothing and furniture only.

I asked, then, what if I include clothing with this pick up? It has to be at least five bags, was the reply.

Finally, I said, in a more stern tone, that my chairs are, in fact, furniture, and in addition, they are way too large to stick in the back of my car and bring them down.

Guess I got through. The Salvation Army will be picking up my chairs in August.

Hmph.

Yes, and they are coming on the 4th.

Must allow for dramatic license, you know!

ess, when did chairs become furniture? Are you sure? I am glad that they are picking them up, but I think you were completely rude and unfair to this poor man.

We don't consider chairs furniture in our house. The cats aren't allowed on the furnture. Thus, chairs aren't classified as furniture, nor are beds and couches.

go figure.

Silly me; I thought chairs have been considered furniture since 1980. The classification was supposed to change when the US adopted the metric system.

Next you're probably going to tell me that we don't use the metric system either!
