Buttercup, they do that electronically now a days. He looks like someone who has been on a bender, but no way as bad as Nick Nolte did when he got arrested a couple of years ago. Obviously Mel is a bigot. Although I wonder if there would be this much action here on MOL if he hadn't made "Passion". For the record I thought the movie was stilted and stereotypical, bordering on being anti-semetic, but not quite passing over the line. |

How'd he manage that flattering photo angle? Aren't most mug shots straight on like our lovely employee badges and drivers license photos? |

Check this out, especially for the photos attached to the article which show Mel cavorting with attractive tourists at a bar in Malibu right before he was arrested: http://edition.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Movies/08/01/gibson.dui/index.html |

First off Mel is a bigot, an anti-semite and a binge drinker type alcoholic. However, I did enjoy the Lethal Weapon films with Danny Glover. Things here get more bizzare daily. The latest is that he is in "rehabilitation" (not rehab) and is reaching out to the Jewish community for help with his problems. I am sure the community will comply, at least to the point of a circumsion. Still, I wonder if this story would have gotten as much play if he hadn't produced Passion of the Christ? The film seemed to, politely, honk off a lot of people in the Jewish community and this seems like a great time for payback. |

Bob, I think he would have gotten the same press because he has made borderline comments in the past, and because of his father's history. I can't imagine him doing more of the kinds of movies I like, so I don't think I'll have the conundrum about whether to see them. I wonder... how does doing movies like the Mad Max series, the Lethal Weapon series, etc. jibe with his strict religious beliefs? Shouldn't he be promoting more peaceful causes? I mean, do you think Jesus would have done Mad Max? |

He made those movies before he became a Catholic zealot (in the late 1990s). In my opinion, the guy has an addictive personality. When he started drinking, he became addicted to it/became an alcoholic. The same with sex and the same with success in Hollywood. As a result of all of his humanly flaws, he latched on to the Church to relieve his guilt, repent his sins and find some sort of salvation. And, guess what? He became addicted to that, too. Examples of this: he has built and established an ultra-conservative Catholic parish in Malibu where the priests only say mass in Latin. He also rejects Vatican II and practices his faith as if a member of Opus Dei (he might be a member, I don't know). It also spilled over into his career with The Passion of the Christ. He's become addicted to the old, hard core traditions of pre Vatican II Catholicism to repent his sins. Nevertheless, just because he's found the Church does not mean he can control himself, as evidenced by last Friday night. Who knows what his next plan for atonement might be? As a result of this past week's sins, he might start the New World's first Holy Crusade, conducting autos-da-fe across the country. It could become a new reality TV. show!
