So how do you think this will affect our streets? I'm already considering the train. By the way, in case anyone needs to know: Burnett will be closed for approx 3 days while they re-pave starting this Friday. I think it's gong to be closed form around the Quick Chek to the 78 overpass. It will be a fun commute on Friday! |

its going to be ugly...and even worse come September...within a week, all the express lanes on 78 will be closed. The project is supposed to run through the end of the year. Next year, they re-do the local lanes. The work on the Parkway/Rt 78 exit isnt slated to start until 2008 too. |

Update: Quote:Route 78 project put off for one week The state Department of Transportation has postponed by a week the massive reconstruction project that will shut down the express lanes along a four-mile stretch of busy Route 78. Work on the $42 million project had been scheduled to begin Friday at 7 p.m. It will now begin Saturday, Aug. 5, according to the DOT’s Web site. The Web item did not give a reason for the delay, and DOT officials could not immediately be reached for comment. The postponement gives a brief reprieve to motorists, who told reporters in recent days they were dreading the prospect of long traffic tie-ups on the interstate highway, among the busiest in New Jersey. About 180,000 vehicles use Route 78 each day. The project will close both express lanes in each direction between Route 24 and the Garden State Parkway until December.
http://www.nj.com/newslogs/starledger/index.ssf?/mtlogs/njo_ledgerupdate/archive s/2006_07.html#165438 Today's Ledger has some "helpful suggestions" for getting around the construction. They involve using Route 280 (where the bridge over the Passaic is being worked on), or using Route 124 (which is a little thing we call Springfield Avenue here in Maplewood). |

Oh my. Springfield Avenue advertised as an alternate to 78? That can't be good! |

Judging by Morris Ave near Kings/SH just now -- I would have thought they just closed the express lanes this afternoon but maybe there is an accident. The closure will be painful, gridlock parties anyone? |

Yeah. Springfield Ave isn't even an alternative to Springfield Ave. I am totally dreading this. I commute once mile of the closure every day. I have been exploring Google Maps with a microscope. There are alternatives (I've tried them all). But, on the best day, it doubles my commute. I wish that the train was a viable option. |

I heard comments by Chief Cimmino of the MPD on 101.5 fm yesterday evening. He was quoted as, basically saying it was going to be a disaster for Towns such as Maplewood. |

Let's revolt. We'll make badges for those of us who live in M/SO. If you don't have a badge, you can't drive on the street. |

So, for those of us who exit the GSP southbound and take 78 to Vauxhall (Exit 50?) - will this still be possible? Will we get onto 78 Express? I'm confused. |

If you are coming down GSP Southbound to Maplewood, you will probably be better off exiting earlier at either 280 or Irvington or going farther south to Rt 22. Sounds like 78 will be a disaster. I bet the back up on 78 will turn into a back on the GSP at that exit. |

They're also closing the Burnett/Stanely Terrace area for repaving today. Question: When do you put up detour signs? Answer: Why after they close the roads. But not immediately after - wait until after the morning rush! I cut thru Union and get on the GSP South at 139 - and while I knew it was coming - I, and it was very silly of me, assumed that there would be detour signs. No signs. I went down springfield and got on at 143. Does any one know the backroads to the rest stop at 141? At least the 78 debacle has been pushed off for a week.

Okay, an alternative way to get back and forth to the Parkway South: Go down Boyden Ave, all the way past Stuyvesant (it turns into Mill Road), straight until you go under the Garden State Parkway (you'll see a sign for "Garden State Bowl" just before going under the Parkway)
After going under the Parkway, make an IMMEDIATE right turn - that is North Union Avenue. You will pass an exit from the Parkway North (Exit 142A), on your right. A little further, you will see that you can turn to your right to go under the Parkway again. The entrance to the Parkway South will be an immediate left turn from there.
Coming home, get off the Parkway North at Exit 142A, turn left and head back up to Boyden Avenue. It may be a little out of your way, but it avoids the road construction on Burnett, as well as the traffic in that vicinity. |

I still don't understand WHY they are doing this work. And for that matter, why is Maplewood constantly repaving its streets? They are really not in bad shape. I swear they are repaving the streets just for something to do around here. |

It's all that extra money. What do you expect them to use it for? Picking up our garbage? Hey! There's another idea for our under-utilized cops: they can repave. They're out there directing traffic, anyway.... |

I think the repaving happens so that they have a nice clean surface to dig up for various pipe/sewer repairs |

I think Union is going to bear the brunt of the local detour crowd. However, I suspect the trip east on 78 will not be so bad for those of us getting on at Burnett or Liberty Ave (after the big crunch). Unfortunately for those starting further west, there really is not local alternative to bypass the traffic created at the Rte. 24 interchange. And yes, the highway needs to be properly rebuilt. It's the sad truth. |

nohero- Have I told you that I love you lately? I always use 142A going north, but I had no idea of the going south part. I have occasionally gone through union and through TUSCAN milk to get on, but that's a lot of winding around. So, thanks. |

I am trying to figure out the 78W closure. Will we still be able to get on there or will we have to get on the 24W ramp and squish in with all the other cars waiting to break free..... Coming east bound, I get off at 49B and figure that I'm pretty much screwed. Even if I get off on Glenside and wind around thru Summit, it will take twice as long as usual to get home. |

Greenetree, how far west do you work and would it pay to use 22 coming home? You might want to check that out and then I would turn up Mountain Avenue to Morris to head to MW. |

Intersection of Glenside/Morris[behind Overlook Hosp.]currently under construction for new curbs and turning lane. They've been at it for at least a month and probably have a few wks. left. This is the road that splits off to get to either 22 or 78W.I will sometimes run parallel to 24 E on the service rd.,cross over 24 at Hobart Ave.,make a right at the flasher[also Hobart]and follow it down along the R.R.[by the S.H. station]and come into Mplwd.by way of Glen Ave./Ridgewood. |

Of course Glenside is under construction. And why wouldn't it be? Wendy - I've done 22 both ways when there've been problems on 78. In the best conditions, it's an hour. And that counts not being on 22 east of Watchung. But, I have it on my list of contingencies, unfortunately. My current commute is 30 minutes. |

"I have seen the future." The big truck accident last night on Route 78 near the Parkway, shut down all the express lanes through this morning. It looks like Springfield Avenue was being used by a lot of people going West this morning. If that was a preview, this will not be good. |

Is there a way to get to the Turnpike (Lincoln Tunnel) from SO without going on 78? What about getting to Newark Airport without 78? I know there's a way--we took a taxi who didn't go on 78--but I could use specific directions. |

Ok, I've been in complete denial about this construction (I go by the winking and blinking informational signs and assume they don't apply to me), and I'm not a confident driver, but reading this thread has made me realize I need to figure out a plan. In the morning I go west on 78 (towards Clinton -- that's local, right?) from Springfield Avenue. In the evening I go east on 78 and get off at the Maplewood exit (that's 49B, right?). What will I do when all this construction happens? What alternative can I take? |

You do the same thing as me. We're just screwed. You can get on/off at Glenside, five miles back and hunt & peck thru Union/Summit, depending on direction. I figure I'll bite the bullet & see what happens the first day. The comforting thing is that we get on/off at the end/beginning of the mess so it's not as bad as having to get thru the whole thing. I envision lots of fender benders trying to get on 78W local/24W and move over to the left lanes in the morning. |

Ok, this is not sinking in. You mean I will not be able to get on 78 going west in the morning or get off at Maplwood in the evening starting real soon until the end of the year? Also, my easy reverse commute is about to get horrendous? Say it ain't so. |
