going 22 mph down durand this morning, why would the car following pass me on the left? i'm dumbfounded. he remained 50 feet in front of me all the way into the village and at the last opportunity pulled into an empty diagonal parking spot by crane's. i'm afraid he wanted to make sure he got a spot before i did (even though i wasn't looking for one!) but i don't want to think that way. what other explanation could there be? people are weird. |

oldstone--I think you are right on the mark. As always parking in the vilaage drives me nuts with rude people. |

You were obviously traveling well below the speed limit! |

A different point regarding the diagonal parking spots on Maplewood Ave. - it is illegal to turn left into those spots from the opposite side of the street. I was informed by the Maplewood PD that they are enforcing this and issuing summonses. |

It's also illegal to make a left into the spots on Sloan in S.O. but every one does it anyway. Which SOPD would enforce that! |

I've been passed on the right several times on Prospect, Irvington Ave, and even Fairview Ave while driving [or even slightly above] the speed limit. Terms for these people can be found here. It boggles the mind why folks think this predominantly residential area is an expressway... |

He was in a rush and wanted to save the valuable .0043 seconds by passing you... |

If he had thought, he might not have done it. I think when we drive, we operate more on habits than on thought. One habit is to make appreciable progress, without much (or any) thought about what the goal is. So if you're not moving fast, you measure progress with how much faster you are going than the other guy. He was probably on automatic pilot and didn't think that getting a parking spot wasn't likely to be a challenge or that he would miff or annoy you.

I [being of a less optimistic mind frame] tend to think some people simply go through life on auto-pilot with a me-first-at-all-cost attitude. Man, I'm getting old... |

I was just passed on Ridgewood this weekend. I was travelling about 30mph (5 mph over 25, the posted speed limit) by a red convertible Solaris. I think it would be wonderful if everyone stopped and considered the speed limits are there to protect our safety and those of our neighbros, not to keep us from getting somewhere faster or easier. Autopilot is no excuse. By the time I arrived at the light on Vauhall and Valley, the solaris was at a red light and I ended up passing him in the other lane. I looked over and smiled! |
