Why is the US continuing to allow these possible terrorists passage into the country? We should not give ANY student visas at this time in our history. We are asking for it.....again!

When will President Bush and Congress officially pass a Declaration of War against terror and the Countries that harbor and fund terror? President Bush stated after 9/11 to the World that “You will either be with us in the War on Terror or against us”. Yet we know Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and other Muslim nations openly support and fund these fanatical Islamic groups. How many "9/11s" will our nation have to endure before we get serious? Would a Declaration of War been declared if this most recent plot of blowing up commercial airlines had been successful – or are our political leaders waiting for multiple homicide bombers in our cities? |

Agree the answer is: oil. underlying problem: lack of reform within Arab countries by their own leaders. (Such as the Saudi royal princes have no intention of reforming their societies with more freedom and opportunity in their own nations, but they remain our 'friends') |

Obviously Glock was responding to Maplewoody's post and not the original question at hand. This is sometimes referred to as "thread drift" but I can understand mem's confusion at it because it almost never happens here, esp in the soapbox sections. In fact this may be the first documented case of it. Then again, why miss an opportunity to yet again point out that Glock is younger than many of us, which is really the only point of mem's post, and has even less of a tie to the purpose of this thread than Glock's post did. Glock you have to get a few more years under your belt -- and quick -- before anyone around here is going to take you seriously. I hear heavy drinking and smoking tends to age a body more quickly, perhaps that might help. I don't always or even often agree with Glock, but I am really getting tired of the only response to his posts having to do with the number of years he's been alive in comparison to all us older and infinitely wiser farts around here.

Mem, I'm all like duuuuh. I thought you were being condescending. I haven't heard anything more about them. And I don't necessarily trust this "innocent" schtick or story either. Nobody who wants to be a terrorist worth his salt these days looks or acts like a terrorist, until the last possible moment. And who in their right mind thinks they can just come to this country on a student visa and "look for work" in places scattered far and wide from where they are supposed to be? You gotta climb the fence at the Mexican border to be able to do that. And it's not like these guys were found near their destination or in transit to it. Fishy.

I rather appreciate that Glock posts here on MOL. We were all young once, that's not a bad thing. He brings his perspective, agree or disagree. There are certainly "older wiser" posters here who post just to make most of us crazy. Back to the thread.. This is a very strange story. These guys were all headed to Montana for school. They didn't show up. Two were arrested in Maryland, one in Chicago, one in Minnesota and two in New Jersey. 6 are still missing. Um.. hello? Is it really 5 years since 9-11? Has Homeland Security been improved at all? Would it be inappropriate to suggest GPS tracking for ALL students issued visas? Maybe bracelets, maybe dental implants? OK, maybe that's a bit much.. but we really do need to get a handle on this.

Why are Muslims buying 1000's of cell phones? 2 Dallas MUslims were recently arrested in Detroit with 1000 cell phones in their van. Another few Muslim guys were also arrested a few days ago in Ohio with tons of new cell phones in their possession. What the F were they planning on doing with all those phones? |

They use cell phones as triggers for bombs (IEDs). The ringer is hooked to the bomb detonator. They wait for people to get near the bomb, then phone the bomb, boom. |

"Why are Muslims buying 1000's of cell phones?" I dunno, maybe they are going to sell them for a profit. I have another question. Why would someone who needed one, or even just a dozen, cell phones to set off bombs, buy hundreds of them? I mean, if you were plotting a bombing, why would you buy ten or a hundred times more cell phones than you needed at the time? That might look suspicious. Just wondering ... |

They claim they are buying them to resell for a profit. The report I saw was unclear if the sales were to be domestic or foreign. The same report indicated that the dealer that at least one of the groups buying phones for had been checked by the FBI and cleared of any terrorist connections. The Feds have picked up most of the Montana 11 and still are saying their going AWOL wasn't terrorist related, although no other motives were given.

Their message is simply: "Be afraid. Let us continue to wage asymetrical warfare effectively as your political leadership change the very nature of your country." The mouse scaring the elephant into spending hundreds of billions of dollars that would be better spent on repairing school buildings and giving healthcare to every child in the nation. |

You are very understanding about the plight of these students. I'm not. I don't see a plight here. They seem way off the plight plan. They had the scratch to pay the University of Montana to go their student visas, so they are not poor. They were accepted to be students at the univeristy, so they are smart enough to get themselves to Montana, which is a big, easy-to-find state. They are just jerks.

It is Montana State University, not University of Montana (my brother's U). MSU obeyed the law and reported that these students did not arrive. The interesting question is how many other colleges and universities are as diligent? This episode is getting lots of publicity, but if 11 of 17 students in a program don't show up (apparently behaving like teenagers and thinking they can just do whatever they want instead of studying) what is the percentage of foreign students that aren't showing up at other schools. By the way, I think that the real screening for the visas is done either by our crack Homeland Security Dept. or the State Dept. It supposedly is no longer that easy to get a visa. |

Sorry, I think the university bears some responsibility here. If, as you seem to imply, this is just a case of teenage hijinks, maybe the university doesn't need to be in the visa procurement business for teenage hijinkers. |

And the state department won't grant a student visa without a university or other educational institution vouching for the student. I'm just wondering what the university's rationale was for vouching for these guys. That their checks cleared? Frankly, their program does not sound like it would attract very many serious scholars. |

The Feds refused visas to several of the Egyptian students who applied, my guess because Uncle Abduhl was a member of The Brotherhood or something similar. Even the government who, as Dave said, wants you afraid isn't claiming their AWOL status has anything to do with terrorism. I suspect they just wanted to see the bright lights and the big city. They are a bunch of 18 to 21 year old boys. Having one at home, I can guarantee you judgement in that age group sometimes leaves a lot to be desired.

Again, a college has no role in the decision.
Quote:International students must appear before a United States consulate in order to secure an F-1 student visa. The following forms will be required to apply: Form I-20, a valid passport, and proof of sufficient financial support.
Quote:Under U.S. law, all applicants for non-immigrant visas are viewed as intending immigrants until they can convince the consular officer that they are not. You must therefore be able to show that you have reasons for returning to your country that are stronger than those for remaining in the United States. "Ties" to your home country includes the following: family, job, financial assets that you own or will inherit, investments, etc.

Thanks, Dave. What is Form I-20? Bob--The medium is the message. The Feds seem to have put out an all-points bulletin in this case. Naturally, a person wonders why. I don't think the students' behavior is just teens being teens. Maybe they just wanted to get in the door any way they could and hope to live here permanenly, apply for citizenship after an amnesty. A student visa's the "open sesame."

Like I said, just say no to all visitors, students or even just tourists. Especially if they're Muslims, whether they are citizens from the EU or KSA. Once they're in, they're in! We have to spend our hard-earned tax dollars to keep track of them or track them down and deport them if they deviate from the conditions of their visa. (Why are Egyptians coming to study in our country anyway? We don't go there to study in their universities!) Again, why take a chance? Regarding these particular 11 Egyptians, I'm sure the DHS had good reasons (and they are not poltical!!!) for putting out a massive media alert. It's not like international college students go missing every day. Well, even if they do, I'm sure there still was a really good reason behind these particular 11 potental terrorists. |

International visitors spent about $94 billion in the USA last year. A 1-percentage-point gain in the USA's share of foreign travelers would mean $12.1 billion in extra spending and 146,000 new jobs, the TIA says. http://www.usatoday.com/money/biztravel/2005-03-31-usvisits-usat_x.htm |

Xavier, I agree. In fact, I think we should simply remove ourselves from the International community. What the heck do we need them for anyway? Why do Americans go abroad to spend their money when they can spend it here in the good ole' USA? And why are we spending money putting our armies in harms way half way around the world when there are illegals streaming across our border, which they should be protecting? If the rest of the world wants to blow themselves up, let 'em. No reason for us to get involved. We should revoke all visas, send home all those people taking American jobs and taking up seats in our universities that could be going to Americans. And send all those tourists packing. You know the ones, making our tourist sites too crowded for red-blooded Americans. It's not like we can spend their pesos or rupees or yuan, or whatever the heck kind of funny money they bring over here. |

Xavier, Yeah, Subsidizing them and their damn funny money that they use to pay for school. That's why they don't usually need scholarships. They print up all their money, take it here in a suitcase, and covert it to good old US greenbacks to pay for school. And you know what else? How do we know all those people that say they want to become citizens are not really infiltrators and sleeper agents? I mean, it happened during the cold war. We know it can happen. So why take chances? I say we shut down our borders completely. Don't let any of them foreigners in. |

Dear Breal: An Eqyptian cannot ask for asylum or wait for the next amnesty. The first amnesty hasn't even passed and now they are talking that it will only apply for people who have been here for longer than 5 years. Marriage to a US citizen is not an alternative anymore as that does not give you citizenship status. Nor does giving birth to a child. The immigration authorities have been rounding up day laborers au mass and arrested and deported them. Frankly why bother...let's use the funds for areas of real terrorism. I mean really .... have you heard of a terrorist who was a house painter, a gardner, in construction, etc. NO. Terrorists come fully funded. The few that infiltrate the country for years are not some young dumb kids that have been brainwashed to commit suicide or haven't even been told that the mission is a suicide mission like some of the trade center bombers (they thought they are hijacking a plane). The infiltrators are the planners, the finacial distributers and the true fanatics that can hide their true filling from their family and friends for years. The only way we can successfully fight terrorism is to no longer be dependent on the area. Lets get away from the oil. Lets let the Saudi Royal Family (the biggest supporter of terrorism) be broken to pieces by their own people. Lets let them have all the oil and sand. You can't eat either of it. The rich people in the terrorism havens are oil people or government members and corrupt and lethal. I wish Israel would consider moving to the US. The Israeli ingenuity has created a haven out of a desert and their military is first class. We could use this ingenuity (but I know that is a pipe dream). Lets let Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Lebanon, Syria and the rest live of their land and not the billions of foreign dollars they seem to not mind excepting. Also foreign exchange students are in demand as an exchange student that stays for one semester fills the full year requirements for the minority he or she might come from. How many exchange students do you see that are white? Most colleges fill their racial quotas with exchange students. That is one of the side effects of political correctness.

Bajou--The program in this instance was 30 days, not even a semester. One of the cheapest student visas a person can buy, I would imagine. I agree with you that the supreme issue--for saving the planet, for peace on earth--is developing clean sources of energy. Sun and wind. We should be throwing everything at R&D to develop the technology to make sun and wind energy viable. Why aren't we? I think because American corporations haven't figured out how to sell the sun and wind. They are in limitless supply. The profit motive hasn't kicked in. Or if it has, it's just to protect the deadly status quo. Big-oil candidates like George Bush "win" elections, appoint Dick Cheney V.P., and, well, you know the rest. Gov't money that could be spent on funding the kind of R&D I'm talking about is used to fund oil wars instead. Growing up in the U.S., I remember the national obsession with the space program. It was nonpartisan. Science met p.r. met patriotism to produce a focused effort to develop technology. I think Al Gore is trying to spark something like that now, but obviously the gov't backing is missing. We need the equivalent of a race to space: a race to technology to make clean energy viable. Hmmm. The slogan needs work.
