I got home from South Beach yesterday and stayed at a terrible hotel for one night. I flew in late because of the threats on Thursday and checked into my hotel only to go into the bathroom, take the sanitized strip off the toilet and see urine all over the toilet seat. I called down to the front desk and they put me in a different room (had to carry my own bags there too) in a smoking section that was half the size of the first room. I would have left but didn't know where I could find another hotel at midnight. I spoke with a manager the following day when I was checking out but all he did was apologize and say he wouldn't blame me if I didn't want to come back there. Am I wrong to think I should have been given at least a discount on the room? I was by myself at the time so I probably didn't stick up for myself the way I should have but is it too late to call or write a letter?

You checked in only to go to the bathroom? wow!

that stinks - perhaps you should write to the corporate office (if there is one), BBB, and if you paid by credit card you might try disputing the charge & get them to try to work it out for you...

No; you should be comped the night. Was it a chain? Send an e-mail to the Corporate office. Most hotel chains are pretty responsive to this stuff. It helps if you are a regular traveler, but even if not, it's worth a try.

I'm thinking that it is a budget hotel (based on the strip) but if it is reputable, you can raise enough hell. Next time, when the manager offers apologies, demand your discount on the spot.

tripadvisor.com is your best revenge. Post your review and experience there. South Beach hotels are notorious for poor customer service. Good luck.

Which hotel was it? I was in SB in March and stayed at the Shore Club. Nothing but a pleasant experience.

doula- woops, bad phrasing!

Tofu- It was right next door to the Shore Club I think. The Continental South Beach Hotel.. it used to be the Riande.

I definitely should have asked for the discount on the spot and am kicking myself in the you know what for it. I don't think it is a chain but I will be writing a letter. tripadvisor is definitely on my to do list as well! Thanks for the suggestions.

Uhm, now I know why Mrs. K always carries Lysol dienfectant wipes when we travel. :-)

Years ago a buddy of mine was being transfered from Boston to Philadelphia. He was a long term "guest" at the Holiday Inn on Market, a block from his office. Being a little perverted he used to very carefully remove the sanitized strip from the toilet in the evening and put it back on in the morning, just 'cus he could. After a week or so the hotel maids were nudging each other and pointing him out as the guy who never used the john.

I had a nightmare hotel experience and did the following:

1) letter to the manager of the hotel
2) CC-ed the letter to the state's division for tourism
3) CC-ed the letter to the state's division of commerce
4) filed a complaint with the BBB

and

put it on tripadvisor.

I got reimbursed, got a conciliatory package from the Wisconsin Division of Tourism (including a hat, danish kringle and bumper sticker), and the good feeling of having prevented anyone else from suffering the same fate.

Not sure if this will make you feel better or worse but here is what tripadvisor readers have to say about your hotel:

Oy, those reviews are right on. I had to book it that day because the group I was meeting wasn't arriving until 330 in the morning because of the threat delays. I would have had to wait for hours in a lobby until they arrived.. (the room was booked under their names and I was not allowed to check in without them. The rest of the hotel was booked and this hotel was the best I could do so last minute.) I will definitely be reading reviews before my next trip.

Sounds like you aren't going to get much out of them. You should still try, especially w/ Mel's suggestions. You never know.

Why should she get the whole room comp'd? They did give her alternate accommodations. I agree they should have discounted the room or gave her a free meal or something, but completely free? I don't think so. Just my 2 cents.

I once went into a La Quinta Inn and found someone else already staying in the room they gave me, and all their clothes and wet towels were all over the place. (Hollywood FL)

Stay at the Crescent Suites, on Ocean Drive when you are in South Beach!

Eat dinner at least once at the Cafe Cordoza, a few doors down Ocean Drive.

I once found an empty box of viagra in my room at the W/Atlanta. Then the hotel lost my charcoal cashmere sweater at the dry cleaner and replaced it with a pair of gray socks. (I can see how they confused the 2)
