I take the 6:29 from Maplewood to NYC. There was some very unusual police activity at the train station this morning. Unfortunately, I got to the station early enough to catch a glimpse of what was going on, but too late to switch into "yenta" mode. From what I saw, there were at least two Maplewood POs in front of the trainhouse, and two other men on the middle platform (they were the ones who caught my attention. They were both holding rifles and both wearing bullet-proof vests that I THINK said "FBI"). There was no delay on the train what so ever. Does anyone know what happened/is going on? |

Rosiegirl - I take that train, too. The rifles were a bit unnerving. Another officer was handing out yellow NJT flyers reminding passengers to report suspcicious activity and/or packages (and that the current security alert was in fact "yellow"). |

Sounds like a drill of some sort. Nothing like a couple of guys with rifles to get your attention. LOL More seriously today is the day Mohammed rode into Jerusalem. It is a big day for Muslims, so a little extra vigilence is probably in order. |

Oh come on, don't start that here. There's plenty of that going on in the Politics section. |

Sounds like the complaints about bike thefts at the train station are finally being taken seriously. |

How long do you think that it would take to ride a bike from Maplewood to Jerusalem? |

Does your bike float on water? If not, it'll take a bit longer riding your bike on the floor of the ocean! |

There was a helicopter circling our quaint village between 6 and 7 this morning. Must have been related. |

call me a party pooper, guys...but can we stick to the serious subject? the presence of all those transit police, state police, police dogs, rifles and helicopters circling up and down the tracks and memorial park over and over was unnerving, to say the least. anyone with serious information? |

They were at the SO station too, handing out flyers reminding us to be alert. They assured us there was nothing specific to worry about (today). Men dressed all in black with machine guns--just what you want to see first thing in the morning. |

OK, seriously. IMHO, we can expect to see more fear-mongering as elections get closer. I'm quite sure that Homeland Security got all whipped up over the date and decided to suggest that local authorities span out across suburban commuter lines nation-wide, just to remind us that we need our government to protect us. Stay the course! Shock and awe! Trust in the Great Decider! BTW, do you think it is easier or harder to clear brush riding a bike? |

The reminders are a good thing. We'll be at risk for a long time, no matter who the president is or what party he belongs to. |

Nothing at mountain station but the helicopter was going in circles. Frankly I find it stupid to do the drills. First people get frantic cause they don't know what's going on and after the 10th time nobody takes it serious. They do these drills here at Grand Central all the time and nobody gives one iota anymore. There will come a day when there is really need for action and everybody will be slacking thinking it's just another drill.

i hope not too many people agree with you, bajou. wherever i am, when i see police/military i make a point of being aware, vigilant and respectful of what they are there for. i do not take them for granted as one cannot be too careful today. when i get on a train, i make a point of looking around at who is there. not a day goes by, since 9/11, the london train bombings, etc. that i don't think about what could happen. the randomness of the violence is such that one can never be lax. life has changed. people perished that we should remember to be vigilant. honor them. |

Drills are designed to enable our emergency response personnel to try out new techniques, become more familiar with equipment and work to improve response time and coordination. All of this will be to our benefit if/when we have another attack like the one on 9/11/01. I would rather see drills than be faced with the communication and coordination problems which faced our emergency forces on 9/11. |

Oldstone: I honor the people every day by still commuting .... I think of them and one in particular more then most people think about their loved ones: Read my post: http://www.southorangevillage.com/cgi-bin/board-profile.cgi?action=view_profile&profile=bajou-users We have about 5 drills a month between my building and Grand Central. They close of whole blocks and if you ask whats going on you get no answer. I think that people will become immune to it until they really need to react. I know I will be ready. 9/11 showed me that I will and can kick a#s if I need to and that is why I felt that I could go to New Orleans after Katrina. I learned to always be ready.

Apparently the drill yesterday was quite extensive. Yesterday evening there were maybe a half a dozen Coasties at Pier 11 in Manhattan and a small cutter was patroling in the river.
