Are these people sick? Or am I behind the times?

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/21/technology/21pedo.html?pagewanted=1&ei=5087%0A &en=24303f4802693d28&ex=1156392000

If one of them came near any of my kids, I would kill them.

Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan was right, we as a society seem to be defining deviancy down.

Sick. I agree with your conclusions.

Chris,

I don't think you're going to get any "controversy" about this one. It has the potential to create a perception of this being more common than it actually is, for both the perps and the rest of us.

What was Moynihan talking about when he said that?

J.B.

It seems like these Internet activities could make it easier for the police to nail some of these people.

"we as a society seem to be defining deviancy down"

I don't think that the fact that pedophiles are trying to "normalize" their desires is synonymous with "we as a society" are changing our values or our definitions of deviancy.

They have a new way of speaking with each other now, and so it's more public. They try to justify their desires and behaviors............a human tendency, unfortunately.

Social Entropy (though apparently various people on the Internet have co-opted my term to mean something else).

This is from the end of the article:

"With the chat rooms, radio stations and other organizations, pedophiles’ views are continually reinforced. But some realize that this online echo chamber can warp reality. For example, a man calling himself AtosW reported to fellow pedophiles that he had been chatting on a game site frequented by boys. A conversation began about the Dutch pedophile party, AtosW said, and the minors reacted with threats of violence.

AtosW was perplexed. “Why are posters THAT young so angry about it?” he asked. “It is after all THEIR rights that they are pushing for.”

A man calling himself Ritter responded. “Your post is a typical example of what happens when you spend too much time in the online BL community,” he wrote. “Believe it or not, most young children are NOT anxious to have sex with adult men.”

There's been a gradual decline in the morals and behavior that our society deems acceptable. Maybe it will stop at pedophilia.

Maybe.
