"see what I mean....... idiot. Iraq is going so well, in the New York Post. Seriously, what did our actions in Iraq do, including removal of Saddam, that hasn't turned out to be a complete unbridled disaster? Ignorance? You can't make a case for anything Strawberry, you just cut (and paste) and run, at best." this post came moments after she said she wished Saddam were still in power. the opinion is bonkers but the personal attack is against the rules of conduct on MOL.. |

i am aware that dave bans "all types," i am just giving him some grief because my last banishment, wh i felt was unjust. i'll get over it but it may cost Jaimie a vote in November... But seriously Dave, you can someone an "idiot" but not a "pa*sy" or pr*ck"? i realize the latter two may be considered harsher, but they all can be considered a personal attack... -SLK I think tulip gets banned because even those posters that agree with her dont like her very much... |

Looks like someone wants to join AE35UNIT. Dave, in the case of Twokitties, I say let's give her a pass this time. Here's why. For the most part, Twokitties confuses opinion with fact. In this I mean, she believes her opinion is textbook material when in fact this is hardly the case. Let's educate our confused poster, why don't we. FACTS: "The sky is blue", "Bill Clinton is tall". "Barbara Bush is a Republican", "Straw is worth millions", etc. These are facts. OPINIONS: "The market is going to crash", "Bill Clinton was a great President", "The war in Iraq is wrong" These are opinions that can be argued from both sides from now until eternity. I've always wondered why some people can't separate fact from preferences, like the twokitties of the world. That said, I don't believe a time out is needed in this case because it's hard to punish those who simply don't know the difference. So in closing Dave, I'll keep an eye on her and if we see this type of behaivor again, I'll alert you. Our goal here on MOL is a forum that allows all posters to voice all types of opinions in a professional, respectful manner. The Great Straw is a proud American. (fact)

Just to be clear on the rules: it's not ok to make a direct insult, but it's ok to make an indirect one? For example, you cannot say "Big Poppa is an idiot" BUT can you say "Big Poppa, if you think that, then you MUST be an idiot" OR would a more indirect method be better "Big Poppa, anyone thinks that is an idiot"? Thanks in advacnce for helping define these often vague rules, Dave. |

Good questions Mr. Big Poppa. I also am curious. I always play it safe and say something like "What Mr. Big Poppa wrote just now is the most idiotic thing I read on this thread" but I wouldn't mind getting enlightened since there are some people I would love to insult back who have gotten away with personal attacks or at least avoided the radar detection. |

Here's how it works.. It's ok to say you believe another opinion is moronic or stupid. "I think all Republicans are crooks." response: holy stupidity. This is not a personal attack this is a denouncement on that belief. "I think George Bush is a Nazi." response: holy ignorance. Again, comparing an American President to a Nazi is foolish. Now, if one were to call another poster "a moron" or "a Nazi", this would be a personal attack. "I think Joe "MOL poster" Blow is stupid." response: a ban from MOL. hope all this helps. |

How about this? Referring to a previous poster with a "silly Lib". Then following it up with "Libs are morons"? Transitive property applies here, doesn't it Dave? In fact, in ae35Unit's post, he did not state Strawberry was an idiot....he could have been referring to anyone, right? Very similar to Straw's posts about Libs, since he sometimes immediately follows another poster's comments with "Libs are Morons", etc. Look, Dave, I might be the only MOLer who thinks Straw is funny, but I think the rules should be applied equally. And Straw, stop trying to get other MOLers banned because if you think ae35unit should have been banned, then you should be banned as well.

I don't say silly "lib", I say silly "libs". If I were to say silly "lib" that would be attacking the individual. By going with "Libs", I attack the movement, just like "neocons", etc.

This thread is another tribute to the yeoman work that Dave and Jamie do to keep this board going. I for one wouldn't be able to stand this. Anybody who's ever had kids and had to deal with the whining and tattling knows what I'm talking about. I've got to hand it to Dave for graciously dealing with crybaby behavior from "adults." |

The rule appears to be that you can insult the group that a person appears to belong to and imply an insult, as long as you don't state it. "Libs are morons" is an example of this sort of implied insult. I don't feel this sort of insult is any less of an insult than the "you are a moron" type but this seems to be acceptable under Dave's rule. I suppose groups that are fair game, such as "libs" (whatever they are), are good ways to insult people. However, I think it would not be good to insult me by saying "Jews are morons". Perhaps you could say "people of average height are morons" because people of average height -- of which I am one -- are not known to be a target of insults in general.
