Art, my rats were not 'alleged'. They were quite real.

The sticky floors are also quite real. When is the last time you were there?

After reading this thread, I am glad that I haven't been there in a while. It seems like things are exactly the same as they used to be.

"I've never not seen them clean up immediately after the movie ends for the next show"

I was there Saturday night and I don't thinl they cleaned up after the previous movie. The floor in the theater was FILTHY. Not even sticky, but food and garbage everywhere.

However, in my experience, it's pretty much like that in most movie theatres.

Pippi, that's not a bad thing. It saves money on food and drink when the person in the seat before you left you something.

Quoting AJC above:

"... Being next to a restaurant and super market will always bring rodents to a neighborhood..."

A helluva ringing endorsement for Roman Gourmet and for Kings!

With endorsements like that, who needs complaints?

I wish it were nicer/better quality equiptment/screens; BUT, I'm glad it's there. I really enjoyed the documentaries I saw there recently. My solution: I tend not to go see epic type movies there (I go to a multiplex for those) & instead try to go there first if it's a kid movie or a silly/comedy kind of movie where the scenery matters less (to me)

When the theater was closed, for several years for renovations, it was greatly missed. The convenience of having a theater in town, sometimes outweighs other factors.

The theater's seen better days but the town would be greatly diminished by its absence. Town theaters say something about a town's people.

Having to travel a half an hour to see a movie at a movie plex sucks.

And I'll take garbage and Maplewood sticky floors over the Essex Green crowd any time.

Why are people speaking about the theater's demise?

What's wrong with the owners' getting the identified problems resolved?

Pippi, Essex green has like 6-7 people cleaning the theater after the previous movie. Sometimes, if you arrive to early for your movie they will inform you that the theater is "not ready" meaning they are making sure it is clean for the next patrons. Never had a bad experience there.

ajc, why are you defending the movie theater so agressively? There are some legitimate issues there that need to be addressed. I say: rant away MOL'ers.

I recall that the first time my wife & kids dragged me to the Wellmont in Montclair ( http://www.robertstheatres.com/wellmont.htm ) to see some Disney pap or other, I was so grossed out by the condition of that theater that I commented to Mrs. Soda something like "This makes the Maplewood Theater look spiffy by comparison!" That was over twenty years ago, yet the Wellmont's still in business. I predict that twenty years from now, the Maplewood Theater will still be operating too.

-s.

"They were quite real."

That's what she said... Listen, Chris... I'm sorry, but I don't believe you. You said you were in the theater a while back and saw rats scurrying across the floor during the movie. What is a while back? I was there on Sunday night to see World Trade Center and the only thing I saw was the movie...

First of all, the theater is very dark while the movie is running, and what may I ask were you looking at down on the floor rather than watching the movie? Were you in the front row, or do you also have x-ray vision to be able to look through the seats in front of you?

FWIW, unless you're some kind of expert on rodents, how were you able to determine what you saw was a rat or a mouse? As a rule most rodents avoid people, and when they do come out they almost never run in pairs or packs unless someone disturbed their nest.

Listen, I'm not calling you a liar, but given the circumstances and what you were told, I'm betting the person you spoke to knows better what you may have seen then you would. BTW, I highly doubt you spoke to the owner of the theater, he doesn’t work there...

And Glock, I'm defending the movie theater aggressively because I can. I also believe bashing local businesses on MOL is BAD BUSINESS!!! We can agree there are some legitimate issues, and I assure you they will be addressed. In the mean time, why don't you stick with Essex Green and direct your MOL'ers to rant about your under age F2F party.

I remember when the Maplewood movie theater was closed for about 8-10 years. It was very dismal seeing it boarded up and dead in the middle of town for so many years. You could see how the town lit up when it re-opened in the early 80's. It may not seem like it for what it is but it is one of the anchor points of the center of the town.

So true Bill. And then it was used for that movie, One True Thing. What community spirit that brought to our town. When people talk about that movie, the first thing I point out is our beautiful town center. It is an assest to our town.

And by the way, Danny and Sue, are the managers of the theater, not the owners of it. They do so much for the community. I have never seen Danny without a smile on his face. It brightens my kids' day!

Art, why do you feel the need to be so unnecessarily spiteful, illogical, contradictory and nasty?

Anytime anyone says anything you have the slightest disagreement with, you get all snippy and bitchy. You're right, and the rest of the world is wrong.

On most of these issues, like the theater, you don't have the slightest idea what you are talking about.

And you called me a liar.

Next sentence, you deny calling me a liar.

I'll settle for calling you spiteful, illogical, contradictory and nasty.

Dearest Fab, Pro, and Chris, et al...

Lets all try and get a grip and a life... I'm not looking for a pissing contest with any of you, so back off please. This thread is about business, it‘s not political or another Ajc gang bang opportunity. Criticize my suggestions or comments if you must, but not me...

FWIW, I'm doing the best I know how not to make this personal, but I refuse to take responsibility for when the rest of you are wrong or confused. When I tell someone I don't believe them, that's what I call be authentic and polite. When I say I'm not calling you a liar, it means I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt about what you thought you saw…

However, when someone calls "ME" spiteful, illogic, contradictory, and nasty... IMHO, that means it's a personal attack and you're looking for trouble. I believe we have all said what we needed to say, and I hope you'll agree that we should move on to more important matters before this thread attracts anymore of my fans. Thank you very much...

AJC,

You seem to be the one to have started what you call a "pissing contest" by criticizing people who used their right of free expression to complain about the conditions in a local business (a business that some of us frequent and where, yes, we have complained to those on site, hoping for improvements).

It sounds as though you have decided to pull your tail between your legs and walk away on this one.

That's the right decision.

That's right pal... I'll be the bigger man this time! I really don't get any pleasure dealing with a bunch of chronic complainers, cry babies, and little whiners anyway.

Have all your free expression if you must, but God forbid any of you would get off your and do something to change things around here for the better. Just keep on flapping your lips and "hoping" and "bitching" for improvements. Hey, you never know?

1. When we moved here the theater had one screen and over 600 seats. I believe it was the second largest theater in New Jersey. The theater had seen better days, back before WWII it hosted live performances as well as showing movies. It wasn't econmically viable any longer.

2. Local interests, which may or may not have included Art, proposed a multi-plex. There was tremendous opposistion mostly over parking and "out of towners" (code for people from Newark and Irvington) clogging downtown Maplewood. Eventually the TC approved the plan.

3. The renovation was done in an economical manner. The old seats were used, which disappointed me as they were uncomfortable.

4. The theater did well and ancedotally I think it continues to do well. While not part of a chain, it manages to get top first run movies, which they wouldn't get if they didn't pack people in.

5. Peoples expectations have risen. The newer chain theaters mentioned here have comfy seats and much better audio visual equiptment. The trade off is that these places have no charm and are a good twenty to forty minute drive away. Still people want the amenities. I think the new multi-plex at SOPAC will have that and one way or another it will be a first run type theater. It isn't going to be an art house.

6. This is a significant threat to the Maplewood Theater. If the Maplewood Theater is going to continue to prosper it is going to have to be updated either by the current owners or by new owners, meaning a chain. Otherwise it will fade into oblivion, which is sad because it is a real amenity for Maplewood and, as Art points out, brings business into town.

As a former employee, I can tell you that there has been a mice problem at the theater for a long time. That's not a personal attack. It's a fact. And since my departure from the theater, I have been told by two individuals that they have seen mice run across the floor during a film. Fact.

I was in the Tuesday night showing of little miss sunshine. I had seen the film about a month ago in NYC and was so happy I could see it again in maplewood. My sister and I were the first patrons in the theater. When the ad's before the film starting showing, you could see a noticeable blur on the upper left side of the screen. I got up to complain to an usher. After I returned to my seat, I saw at least three others get up during the first few minutes of the film. I assume they were also complaining. The projectionist tried to fix it once but only made it worse. My sister then got up and complained again. It was "fixed" again, but only restored to the original blur in the corner. It was quite annoying and is really unacceptable.

everyone in that theater paid to see a film. In focus. And that didn't happen. If the theater loses business because of this thread it is their own fault for not being a clean, fully operational theater.

I've been an enthusiastic patron of the Maplewood Theater for several years. I am thrilled it's been able to survive amid the megaplex competition, and I think it makes an invaluable contribution to our community. That being said, I will happily go to other theaters if ours can't improve the quality of its service. I nearly walked out of a screening several weeks ago when the theater played (I kid you not) 25 minutes of trailers, advertisements, reminders to visit the popcorn counter, etc. People were leaving, and I probably should have. On top of that, the clutter/trash you see is just ridiculous ... when are the theater owners going to realize that even dyed-in-the-wool Maplewoodians WILL go to Millburn or other theaters if the conditions aren't improved????
