This Aussie bought it from a sting ray that apparently was hidden in the sand and skewered the famous croc hunter.

Too bad, me and the kids whould get a kick out of watching Steve Irwin wrastle with crocs, snakes and other such wild things on the tube.

In addition, he had become my favorite Aussie since the recent Mel fiasco.

BTW - where to get Tooheys?

According to the news stories, he was struck in the chest with the poison barb of a stingray. He was diving in the area as part of the filming of a documentary. The story said he was probably killed instantly.

My kids enjoyed his show when they were younger, and I watched along with them. I'm sorry for Steve and for his family.

Yup, Crowe's a Kiwi. Although, whenever he does something good, the Aussies consider him Australian. When he's throwing telephones he miraculously becomes a Kiwi again.

Mel's not an Aussie; he was born in Peekskill, New York to Irish immigrants and raised partly in Australia. Funnily enough, Nicole Kidman was born in Hawa'ii. Most of these famous Australians were born elsewhere.

Tom - Toohey's New? I have never seen it being sold in the U.S. I would be interested to find out. Same goes for Carlton, VB, Crown Lager, and Cooper's.

Kidman is Aussie because her parents are. That's the rule of thumb Gibson's parents weren't when he was born, although he has lived here for so long and trained here that we were happy to take credit (he used to stay at my cousins' motel as a young married man, and also owned a farming property around here); I think he even became an Aussie citizen. Crowe is a citizen and owns property near by brother's. Irwin was born here and lived out the stereotype (some would say cariacature).

some time ago I posted a list of the top 300 Aussie beers and how to contact them so you could get them over there - got it through a google search. Wouldn't still have it now however if the search function is working...

Reports are that the video shows Irwin get spiked by the stingray and then pull the barb out of his chest. Apparently he died within a few minutes.

I think it was within seconds.. apparently the barb is actually lined with little barbs, so when he pulled it out (or when it retreated, which it would have), it caused a sawing action. The poor guy died damn near immediately, because it just destroyed his heart. Didn't see this thread till just now, I've posted on the other one. I think this is one of those sad, shocking, weird people-in-the-news things that gets at us. Innisowen, are you Australian..? Ya sure sound like one. Sorry if that's something that has been established..
